Review: January 19, 2018

Last March I started looking for a roofing company when I found Interlock Roofing. I was curious about what a metal roof would cost and the durability of the materials. To my surprise, although the cost of a metal roof is pricey it is well worth the extra money. I will never have to worry about having to replace a single shingle again! In the last 2 years, I have had a lot of repairs done on my roof using contractors who were not very good as I soon found out. I kept losing shingles with every wind that would pop up due to poor workmanship. Please believe me that a metal roof installed by Interlock is guaranteed to not come apart, fade or discolor or they will fix any issues found for the life of the roof although I do not expect to have to make a call to them if ever. Interlocks workers spent 2.5 days installing my roof working 11 hours per day. They are very dependable and knowledgeable. I would recommend this company 100 percent!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Joliet

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Joliet, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Joliet.

How does an aluminum metal roof hold up to freeze-thaw cycles in Illinois winters?

Aluminum actually performs better in freeze-thaw conditions than most roofing materials because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or splitting. Joliet experiences about 81 freeze-thaw days per year, where temperature swings stress brittle materials like asphalt and slate. Aluminum's three-dimensional interlocking panels accommodate movement across all planes, so the expansion that cracks asphalt shingles or causes ice dams simply flexes within the system. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) won't develop stress fractures, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating maintains flexibility at sub-zero temperatures, protecting against the 70 cm of annual snow melt and refreeze cycles that degrade conventional roofs.

Do I need to worry about snow load or ice dams with a metal roof in Joliet?

Snow load is not a structural concern because Interlock's panels weigh only 0.41–0.59 lb per square foot, allowing installation over existing roofs without reinforcement. Joliet receives about 70 cm of snow annually, but the light weight and interlocked seams prevent the water-entrapment conditions that cause ice dams on heavier roofs. The Standing Seam profile is particularly effective at shedding snow because its continuous vertical ribs direct meltwater downward, and the smooth aluminum surface reduces the friction that traps ice. Unlike asphalt, which absorbs meltwater and creates an insulating layer that accelerates ice dam formation, aluminum stays cold and allows water to drain freely. Snow guards can be added to any profile if you prefer to manage drift strategically.

Does a metal roof hold up to hail, and can I save money on insurance in Joliet?

Yes—Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest available, and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This credential is measurable and understandable to insurers, and many homeowners report premium reductions when switching from asphalt to a Class 4-rated metal roof. While Joliet's 20 km/h average wind speeds don't produce severe hail, the region's thunderstorm season brings occasional impacts, making impact rating a practical advantage. Contact your insurance agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 certificate to explore discounts; the rating's third-party verification (Intertek listing 33876) carries weight with underwriters more reliably than marketing claims alone.

Will a metal roof blow off in high winds?

No. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification, and Joliet's gusts typically reach 102 km/h—well within that margin. The interlocking design distributes wind load across all four edges of each panel, preventing the uplift that separates asphalt shingles in 60–80 mph gusts. Because panels are mechanically fastened through the concealed lock (not exposed fasteners), wind cannot exploit fastener holes to peel back the roof layer by layer. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms the wind performance under current building codes (IBC/IRC, reissued 2025), and installation over an existing solid deck further stiffens the system against pressure fluctuations.

What warranty comes with an Interlock metal roof, and how long will it really last?

The Guardian Warranty provides a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—meaning no deductibles or depreciation—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's transferable once to the next owner, who receives 50 years from completion. The Alunar coating itself is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (measured to ASTM D4214 and D2244 standards). Real-world installations from 1998 onward in coastal salt-air and Antarctic research stations demonstrate that aluminum panels outlast the structural systems beneath them; Interlock has been installing since 2001, with roofs from that era still in service. This warranty structure reflects the material's actual longevity—you're buying a roof your children may inherit, not one requiring replacement in 20–25 years.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Over a 50-year horizon, metal is the more economical choice. Asphalt requires tear-off, disposal, and replacement every 18–25 years; two or three cycles cost far more than the initial metal investment. Metal's non-prorated lifetime warranty and light weight (0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft) mean no structural upgrades, reducing installation cost. Maintenance is minimal—no algae treatments, no shingle replacement patches, no seasonal repairs from Joliet's 81 annual freeze-thaw cycles or 70 cm snow load. Insurance discounts for Class 4 hail rating (UL 2218) and potential energy savings from energy-efficiency colors (solar reflectance up to 0.55) offset the higher initial price. A true cost comparison requires three asphalt replacements; at that point, the aluminum roof has paid for itself in labor, disposal tipping fees, and avoided storm damage claims.

Does a metal roof reduce cooling costs in summer?

energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect significant solar heat rather than absorbing it like asphalt. The aged copper and stone finishes achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they return heat to the sky instead of radiating it into the attic. In Joliet's 3056 annual sunshine hours, this difference accumulates: lower attic temperatures reduce air-conditioning runtime and extend compressor life. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating quantifies this performance independently. While Joliet's climate isn't as heat-dominant as southern regions, the reflective benefit appears immediately in summer months and compounds over decades. Combined with the roof's light weight, which means no heat-trapping mass, aluminum keeps your home cooler passively—no batteries, no moving parts, just physics working in your favor.

How much upkeep does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or wood?

Metal requires almost none. Asphalt develops algae, cupping, and granule loss within 5–10 years in Joliet's damp climate (1102 mm rain annually); wood shakes split under freeze-thaw stress; tile cracks and leaks at mortar joints. Interlock's aluminum panels are CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance—the smooth, non-porous surface sheds debris, algae cannot colonize the Alunar fluorocarbon finish, and the four-way interlocking seams prevent water entry regardless of wind direction or ice dam formation. A few times per decade, rinse gutters and check fasteners; that's it. No pressure washing, no coatings, no surgical shingle replacement. The metal's inert chemistry means weather doesn't degrade it the way sun and moisture degrade asphalt. This is the last roof you buy—after 50 years, you're maintaining gutters and flashing, not the roof surface itself.

Can you install a metal roof over my existing shingles, and how long does it take?

Yes. Because aluminum panels weigh only 0.41–0.59 lb per square foot—roughly 96% lighter than slate or concrete tile—they can install directly over most existing roofs without structural reinforcement. The four-way interlocking design locks to itself, not to the deck, so the existing shingles act as a substrate and underlayment. This approach eliminates tear-off costs, landfill fees, and weeks of debris cleanup. The installation timeline depends on roof size and complexity, but the single-layer fastening (concealed locks, no exposed fasteners) is faster than traditional roofing. Your local Interlock installer, serving the region since 2001, can assess your existing roof during the site visit to confirm suitability and provide a project schedule. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 details the acceptable substrate conditions for your jurisdiction.

Is a metal roof more environmentally responsible than standard asphalt roofing?

Significantly. Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life—versus asphalt shingles, which are dumped in landfills by the millions of tons annually. Because metal lasts 50+ years and won't require replacement, you avoid the tear-off-and-haul cycle entirely. When the roof eventually does reach the end of service, aluminum scrap dealers actively purchase it for reuse in automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods, so your old roof becomes raw material for new products rather than waste. The non-prorated lifetime warranty eliminates premature replacement due to manufacturer defects, reducing unnecessary material consumption. Over 50 years in Joliet's climate (1102 mm rain, 70 cm snow, 81 freeze-thaw days), an aluminum roof avoids two or three asphalt replacements—a tangible environmental benefit measured in tons of landfill diversion and virgin material saved.
