Review: January 19, 2018

Last March I started looking for a roofing company when I found Interlock Roofing. I was curious about what a metal roof would cost and the durability of the materials. To my surprise, although the cost of a metal roof is pricey it is well worth the extra money. I will never have to worry about having to replace a single shingle again! In the last 2 years, I have had a lot of repairs done on my roof using contractors who were not very good as I soon found out. I kept losing shingles with every wind that would pop up due to poor workmanship. Please believe me that a metal roof installed by Interlock is guaranteed to not come apart, fade or discolor or they will fix any issues found for the life of the roof although I do not expect to have to make a call to them if ever. Interlocks workers spent 2.5 days installing my roof working 11 hours per day. They are very dependable and knowledgeable. I would recommend this company 100 percent!

The only thing that I feel that they could have improved on was getting the material here when it was supposed to but that was not Interlock Roofing's fault. This is the best roof I've ever had and I would recommend it to anyone.

Review: December 31, 2014 Completion: October 31, 2014

I was in the trades my whole life, and I really thought that Jesse and his crew did a spectacular job from beginning to end. My wife and I are extremely happy with the roof. It is gorgeous. Everything was terrific. I am very pleased with everything about the roof. It was a lot of money, but I feel in my heart that it was worth it. I don't understand why people still use shingles, and the metal roof amazes me. I think you will see a lot more of them in the future once people catch on.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Channahon

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Channahon, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Channahon.

Will a metal roof hold up through Channahon's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum actually gets better with freeze-thaw because it has no water absorption and expands uniformly. With about 81 freeze-thaw days per year in Will County, that cycling that splits wood shakes and cracks asphalt won't touch aluminum. The oxide layer on 3105-H24 aluminum alloy self-heals when scratched, so microcracks from expansion never propagate into failures. The four-way interlocking panels move together as one system, distributing stress evenly instead of concentrating it at fasteners like traditional roofs do.

Does heavy snow load damage a metal roof, and do I need snow guards in Illinois?

No structural damage occurs because Interlock's Shake profile weighs only 0.58 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than traditional slate or tile—so your home doesn't need costly reinforcement. Channahon averages roughly 70 cm of snow annually. Snow slides cleanly off interlocking seams without pooling; the slick aluminum surface and panel overlap design naturally shed ice rather than trapping it. Snow guards are optional for aesthetic reasons or to protect landscaping, but they're not required for roof integrity the way they often are with heavier materials.

Why can't an aluminum roof rust like steel roofing can?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rust is iron oxide, a chemical reaction that only happens when iron meets oxygen and moisture. Instead, aluminum instantly forms a microscopic oxide layer that stops corrosion at the surface. That layer heals itself when scratched, which is why Interlock panels are coated with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon on both sides. This dual-coat system is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading even with Channahon's 1102 mm annual rainfall. Steel roofs require ongoing painting or they degrade; aluminum just gets more stable with time and weather exposure.

How does a metal roof handle heavy rain without leaking?

The four-way interlocking seams create a continuous water dam—rain flowing across the panels is forced downward and outward by the overlapping profile geometry, not inward. Channahon sees about 1102 mm of rain per year; that water never sits in valleys or pools at joints the way it does with asphalt shingles. Installation includes a solid deck and underlayment beneath the panels, the same water-blocking approach used on slate and tile roofs. When fastened to specification and installed over a properly prepared deck, the system is watertight. Most leaks occur at flashing details around chimneys and valleys, not the panels themselves—those are handled with the same metal flashing principles used on any high-end roof.

Can a metal roof withstand the wind gusts that hit Will County?

Yes. Interlock panels are warranted to resist sustained wind up to 120 mph when installed to specification, and Channahon's typical wind gusts reach about 102 km/h (63 mph). The four-way interlocking system locks each panel to its neighbors on all sides—not just fastened at the top like shingles. This creates a unified structure where wind pressure on one panel is distributed across the entire roof rather than concentrating force on individual fasteners. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms this performance under IBC and IRC wind load standards, and the Guardian warranty backs the installation.

What's the hail rating on metal roofing, and could it lower my insurance?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 means the material survives impact from 2-inch steel balls dropped from 20 feet. Many insurers offer discounts for Class 4 roofs because claims are rare; you'll want to ask your agent for a quote after installation. The non-combustible aluminum also qualifies for Class A fire rating, which some carriers discount further. Impact resistance doesn't degrade over time the way it does with asphalt, so your premium advantage persists for the life of the roof.

Does metal roofing actually save money on air conditioning in Illinois?

Metal roofing reduces cooling costs by reflecting heat instead of absorbing it like dark asphalt does. energy-efficient Interlock colors have initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they bounce sunlight away and release absorbed heat efficiently. Channahon gets about 3056 sunshine hours per year—that's significant summer heat load. A reflective metal roof stays measurably cooler than asphalt in direct sun, lowering air-conditioning run time. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating proves measurable thermal performance. Lighter colors amplify the effect; even darker profiles (like Aged Copper Penny) outperform asphalt because aluminum's physics are different from dark shingle absorption.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Yes, when you measure total cost over the roof's actual lifespan. Asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years and then requires a full tear-off and replacement; aluminum is your last roof purchase. The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, with a 50-year transferable term for the next owner. Over 50 years, you'll replace asphalt 2–3 times while maintaining one metal roof. Factor in disposal costs, labor for tear-offs, and the compounding inflation on reroofing projects, and aluminum's higher initial price narrows to genuine savings. Add hail resistance, fire rating, and energy efficiency, and the math shifts further in metal's favor for most Channahon homeowners.

How long does a metal roof installation take, and can you install over my existing shingles?

Installation typically takes 2–4 days depending on roof complexity and crew size. Yes, Interlock installs directly over most existing asphalt or composite roofs without tear-off, because each panel weighs only 0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft (the Shingle profile is 0.41 lb/sq ft). Your home's structure won't need reinforcement. The existing deck and framing handle the load easily—it's the same weight as plywood and felt. The installer inspects the existing roof deck, repairs any soft spots, then installs battens or clips and the metal panels over the top. This saves weeks of debris removal and labor compared to tear-off. The local Interlock team here has completed thousands of installs since 2001 and can walk you through the timeline for your specific roof.

Is a metal roof really better for the environment than asphalt?

Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life—it never loses value as a material and has established scrap markets. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, get torn off every 15–20 years and sent to landfills because they're difficult to recycle and mix petroleum binders with mineral aggregate. Over a 50-year span in Channahon, you'd landfill 2–3 full asphalt roofs while keeping one aluminum roof that's fully recyclable. The manufacturing process for aluminum has improved significantly, and Interlock's Delta, BC facility has been operating efficiently since 1998. CALGreen certifies the product for reduced maintenance waste. Choosing aluminum breaks the tear-off-and-landfill cycle and creates a circular material loop instead of single-use disposal.
