Review: January 19, 2018

Last March I started looking for a roofing company when I found Interlock Roofing. I was curious about what a metal roof would cost and the durability of the materials. To my surprise, although the cost of a metal roof is pricey it is well worth the extra money. I will never have to worry about having to replace a single shingle again! In the last 2 years, I have had a lot of repairs done on my roof using contractors who were not very good as I soon found out. I kept losing shingles with every wind that would pop up due to poor workmanship. Please believe me that a metal roof installed by Interlock is guaranteed to not come apart, fade or discolor or they will fix any issues found for the life of the roof although I do not expect to have to make a call to them if ever. Interlocks workers spent 2.5 days installing my roof working 11 hours per day. They are very dependable and knowledgeable. I would recommend this company 100 percent!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Symerton

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Symerton, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Symerton.

Will a metal roof hold up through Illinois winters with all those freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw conditions because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or deteriorating. Symerton experiences about 81 freeze-thaw days per year, and roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum (ASTM B209) is engineered for exactly this stress. Unlike wood shakes that split or asphalt that becomes brittle, aluminum panels flex with temperature swings. The four-way interlocking system also prevents water from pooling during thaw periods, eliminating the ice-dam moisture damage that shortens other roofs' lives.

How does a metal roof perform under Symerton's snow load?

Metal roofs shed snow efficiently and handle heavy loads without sagging. Your area receives about 70 cm of snow annually, and Interlock's aluminum panels weigh only ~0.41 to ~0.59 lb/sq ft depending on profile—so light that no structural reinforcement is needed, even over existing roofs. The smooth, interlocked surface encourages snow to slide off safely during warming, reducing the weight accumulation that stresses older asphalt systems. Optional snow guards can be added if you prefer to manage melt patterns, giving you full control without structural worry.

With Symerton getting over 1100 mm of rain a year, will a metal roof leak?

No. The four-way interlocking panels are designed to shed water aggressively, and the system is verified under ICC-ES ESR-1790 for roof performance in heavy rainfall. Symerton's annual precipitation of approximately 1102 mm is managed by the overlapping panel geometry—water flows down and out before it can pool. Installed properly over solid decking and underlayment (which muffles rain noise), the system channels moisture exactly as asphalt does, but without the granule loss and seam failures that plague shingles in wet climates. The interlocks act as secondary barriers, keeping your home dry for decades.

Why doesn't a metal roof rust like traditional steel roofing?

Aluminum cannot rust because iron is not part of its molecular structure—it's pure corrosion resistance by material design. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (applied to both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading) adds extra protection, but even if scratched, aluminum's oxide layer self-heals, sealing the exposed metal. Combined with Symerton's moderate salt-air exposure, this means your roof won't develop the orange staining or structural decay that steel or galvanized systems do. You'll never need to replace rusted panels or worry about corrosion spreading through the fasteners.

Can Symerton's winter wind gusts damage a metal roof?

No. The roof is warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), and Symerton's typical gusts reach only about 102 km/h—well within safe margins. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together in all directions, so wind cannot lift or separate them the way it separates asphalt shingles. Each panel's edges engage with its neighbors, creating a unified structure that gets stronger under stress. Even during severe weather, the mechanical interlock distributes wind load across the entire roof rather than concentrating it at individual fasteners. This design is why the system has been installed successfully from coastal salt-air homes to polar research stations.

Does a metal roof get damaged by hail, and will insurance help?

Interlock panels achieve UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 means the aluminum withstands impacts that destroy asphalt, wood, and tile, so visible hail damage is rare. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer premium discounts for metal roofs, though you should confirm your carrier's current policy. In Symerton, where severe hail is not a dominant climate risk (about 3056 sunshine hours annually provide context), this rating mainly ensures your roof won't be the weak point during any storm. You gain peace of mind and potential savings in one decision.

Will an aluminum roof help keep my home cooler and cut energy bills?

Yes. Interlock's energy-efficient colors have thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (measured per Cool Roof Rating Council standards), meaning they reflect heat that asphalt absorbs and radiates into your home. In Symerton's climate—with about 3056 sunshine hours per year—reflective roofing noticeably reduces summer cooling demand. The lighter colors work year-round: in winter, the roof still sheds snow and rain effectively while reflecting unnecessary solar gain. Over a 50-year roof life, the cumulative energy savings often offset a meaningful portion of the installation cost, especially in homes with significant air-conditioning use.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Yes, when you calculate the full cost of ownership. Asphalt roofs typically need replacement every 15–20 years; Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited (non-prorated) for the original owner and transferable for 50 years to the next owner, eliminating the tear-off-and-replace cycle. Over Symerton's variable climate—81 freeze-thaw days, 70 cm snow, 1102 mm rain, and gusts to 102 km/h—asphalt degrades faster. You avoid multiple replacements, labor cost repeats, disposal fees, and disruption. The material is ~95% recyclable, so its end-of-life value doesn't vanish into landfills. When you're looking at the last roof you'll install, aluminum's true cost is lower than stacking asphalt replacements.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need?

Almost none. Unlike wood shakes that rot and split with Symerton's 81 annual freeze-thaw cycles, or asphalt that needs granule repair and flashing re-sealing, aluminum requires only routine gutter cleaning and occasional inspections. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is verified CALGreen-reduced-maintenance and resists the 30-year warranty period against chalking and fading. You don't pressure-wash (unnecessary), re-seal seams, or replace failing shingles. The four-way interlocking system stays tight through 1102 mm of annual rainfall without deterioration. This simplicity appeals to homeowners tired of asphalt's endless small repairs—your roof ages gracefully instead of gradually failing.

Can a new metal roof be installed over my existing shingles in Symerton?

Yes. Because Interlock panels weigh only ~0.41 to ~0.59 lb/sq ft (the Mediterranean Tile profile is about 96% lighter than concrete tile), no structural reinforcement is needed, and installation over most existing roofs is permissible. The lightweight advantage means your home's framing carries less load while gaining a more durable cover—a rare combination. Most installations happen on solid decking with underlayment, which also absorbs rain noise, eliminating the hollow-drum sound some people associate with metal roofs. Your installer will assess local building codes (all Interlock products comply with ICC-ES ESR-1790 for residential construction) and handle permitting. The process is faster and less disruptive than full tear-off replacement.
