Review: May 28, 2007

This past Fall I began soliciting bids for stripping off two layers of shingles on my 23-year old shingle family home and replacing the "worn" shingles with a new layer of fiberglass shingle. You may ask, since the home was "only" 23 years old, why there was already two layers of shingles and how come the top layer was now in need of replacement! Believe me, I was asking the same questions. Granted, we had not paid (directly) for either layer of shingle since they both were on the home when we purchased it, but it was still a concern of mine with respect to the fiberglass shingle industry. My wife and I have owned this home for nine years and, when we initially moved in, we had the home vinyl-sided and replaced most of the windows with energy efficient, up-and-down windows as opposed to the then crank-out windows. The then existing roof shingles had excellent curl-appeal when viewed against the newly installed vinyl siding and window shutters, so much so that passersby thought we had the roof re-shingled as well. So, in our search for new shingle, we sought out a shingle that would have that same curb appeal as well as longevity. Well, we could not find anything that came close to providing us with the idea that, "Yeah, this one will look great on our home and last a long time." This Spring I responded to a newspaper advertisement I'd seen and a mailing that I received regarding the installation of a ">metal roof. Certainly, installation of a ">metal roof in our "neck of the woods," where there is some pricey real estate, was something of an oddity. However, I did some research on ">metal roofs over the Internet and found myself intrigued and please by what I read. My wife and I met with Interlock Industries, Inc. sales representative Gerry Matta, and he explained the concept and longevity of a metal roof, its energy-savings benefit, and more specifically, showed us the " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and Interlock design afforded by their product known on the internet as NewEnglandsBestRoof.com. After hearing the sales presentation, my wife and I were intent on seeing two homes within 20 miles of our home that had the same color metal roof we anticipated purchasing for our home. Let me tell you, after viewing the exterior of those homes, we definitely had made up our minds that we were going to be the first in our neighborhood with an Interlock ">shingle metal roof because it was going to afford us with fabulous curb appeal for our home. Well, now that the stripping off of the deteriorating fibreglass shingles and the installation of the "" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">tile red" Interlock shingle has been completed, our home is now a showcase for the metal roof industry. We have had numerous compliments from family and neighbors regarding the beauty of the home with the new Interlock shingle installed. We have had many vehicles pass roadside and slow down to view our home and several inquiries form those motorists as to where we obtained the beautiful roof. Thank you to Interlock Industries, Inc. for creating a product that allows my family to have the satisfaction to know that we will never have to replace roof shingles again, will save money on yearly heating and cooling bills, and, more importantly, have a home that truly has a dynamic curb appeal. It's just beautiful!! Thanks again.

even though we were pleased with cleanup effort we still find occasionally a piece of metal. Come the spring I would except to fine more debris but we are still extremely pleased with the crew and the outcome. Pricing was very fair and was cheaper than some competitors.

I would have selected Interlock if it was actually 2 to 3 times the cost of an asphalt roof. From my perspective, the labor cost must be out of line for our region. The quote for a slate roof was less than Interlock in our area.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Brightwood

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Brightwood, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Brightwood.

Will a metal roof hold up through Brightwood's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes. Brightwood experiences roughly 92 freeze-thaw days per year, and aluminum's non-porous structure leaves nowhere for water to penetrate and expand. Unlike asphalt shingles, which absorb moisture and crack when ice forms inside the material, Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy sheds water immediately. The Alunar coating—applied to both sides and warranted 30 years against degradation—seals each panel edge, and the four-way interlocking design keeps water out of joints. This is why Interlock has installed successfully from coastal salt-air zones to Antarctic research stations since 1998, all without freeze-thaw failure.

How does metal roofing perform under Brightwood's annual snowfall?

Brightwood receives about 77 cm of snow annually, and metal's smooth surface sheds snow far faster than asphalt or wood. Unlike shingles that hold snow in place and promote ice dams, Interlock panels allow snow to slide, reducing roof load and dam formation. The lightweight Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb per square foot—so your framing carries minimal extra weight even when snow is present. Optional snow guards can be installed where needed to control slide direction. The four-way interlocking seams prevent meltwater from creeping upward, a common source of winter leaks in traditional roofs.

Does metal roofing leak in heavy rain? Brightwood gets significant precipitation.

No. Brightwood averages 1117 mm of annual rainfall, and metal's impermeable surface sheds every drop. The four-way interlocking panels overlap in a pattern that channels water downward and outward—water cannot flow backward or sideways into seams. The Alunar fluorocarbon finish on both sides of each panel resists moisture infiltration at the material level. When installed to ICC-ES ESR-1790 specification over solid decking and underlayment, Interlock roofing produces the same leak resistance as asphalt—but without the gradual saturation that leads to rot over time. The sealed joints remain watertight through decades of Brightwood's rain and freeze cycles.

Can Interlock metal roofing withstand Brightwood's wind gusts?

Yes. Brightwood's typical daily-maximum winds reach 17 km/h with gusts to 127 km/h, and Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist sustained wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The interlocking design means each panel is mechanically locked to its neighbors in four directions—not just nailed at one edge like traditional shingles. This distributed fastening system prevents wind from lifting or flexing panels. The lightweight aluminum (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means less mass for wind to push against, reducing uplift force. ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 confirms this wind performance under code.

What hail rating does metal roofing have, and can it lower my insurance?

Interlock metal roofing carries UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 means the panel withstands a steel ball dropped from 15 feet without cracking or losing impact resistance. Many insurance carriers recognize this rating and offer premium discounts because claims for hail damage are rare. Brightwood's wind gusts to 127 km/h and seasonal thunderstorm potential make impact resistance valuable. Contact your insurer about discounts; provide the UL 2218 Class 4 certification and ESR-1790 documentation. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, are vulnerable to hail and rarely qualify for such credits.

Do I need to reinforce my roof framing for metal roofing?

No structural reinforcement is needed. The Mediterranean Tile profile—which replicates the appearance of clay or concrete tile—installs at just 0.59 lb per square foot. Concrete and clay tile typically weigh 12–15 lb/sq ft, making Interlock's aluminum version roughly 96% lighter. This means you can install Interlock Tile directly over most existing roof structures without adding beams or posts. The four-way interlocking design distributes loads evenly across the framing, and the panels' light weight means less stress during Brightwood's 77 cm annual snowfall. Even overlaying an existing asphalt roof adds minimal load, so no costly structural work is required.

How much maintenance does a metal roof actually need?

Very little. Unlike asphalt shingles that require periodic nail replacement and debris removal, Interlock aluminum panels do not curl, split, or rot. Gutters need occasional cleaning—standard for any roof. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is warranted against chalking and fading for 30 years, meaning the coating resists Brightwood's 3077 annual sunshine hours without degrading. Wood shakes demand regular staining and sealing. Metal requires none of that. The Guardian Warranty covers maintenance-free performance for the original owner's lifetime, and transferable coverage extends 50 years to the next owner. This translates to decades without the cost of repairs, recoating, or replacement that other materials demand.

Can a metal roof help reduce cooling costs in Brightwood?

Yes. Interlock's energy-efficient colors feature thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55, meaning they reflect the heat that dark asphalt absorbs. While Brightwood's mean annual temperature is 10.7°C (cool), summer cooling still matters, and a reflective metal roof reduces air-conditioner runtime on warm days. The panels are Cool Roof Rating Council rated. Over a 50-year roof life, energy savings compound—every summer day the roof reflects rather than absorbs solar gain reduces your cooling load. Aluminum's low thermal mass means it heats and cools quickly without trapping warmth in the structure like heavy asphalt or tile.

What does the lifetime warranty actually cover, and how long does it last?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited material warranty for the original owner—non-prorated—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. This means defects are covered from day one through the life of the original owner, with no dollar limits that decrease over time. The warranty is transferable once to the next owner, providing 50 years of coverage from the installation date. No other roof type offers this combination. Asphalt is typically 15–25 years; wood shakes 20–30 years; tile and slate much longer but at heavy cost. Interlock's aluminum, manufactured since 1998, simply does not fail under normal conditions—the warranty reflects that durability.
