Review: May 28, 2007

This past Fall I began soliciting bids for stripping off two layers of shingles on my 23-year old shingle family home and replacing the "worn" shingles with a new layer of fiberglass shingle. You may ask, since the home was "only" 23 years old, why there was already two layers of shingles and how come the top layer was now in need of replacement! Believe me, I was asking the same questions. Granted, we had not paid (directly) for either layer of shingle since they both were on the home when we purchased it, but it was still a concern of mine with respect to the fiberglass shingle industry. My wife and I have owned this home for nine years and, when we initially moved in, we had the home vinyl-sided and replaced most of the windows with energy efficient, up-and-down windows as opposed to the then crank-out windows. The then existing roof shingles had excellent curl-appeal when viewed against the newly installed vinyl siding and window shutters, so much so that passersby thought we had the roof re-shingled as well. So, in our search for new shingle, we sought out a shingle that would have that same curb appeal as well as longevity. Well, we could not find anything that came close to providing us with the idea that, "Yeah, this one will look great on our home and last a long time." This Spring I responded to a newspaper advertisement I'd seen and a mailing that I received regarding the installation of a ">metal roof. Certainly, installation of a ">metal roof in our "neck of the woods," where there is some pricey real estate, was something of an oddity. However, I did some research on ">metal roofs over the Internet and found myself intrigued and please by what I read. My wife and I met with Interlock Industries, Inc. sales representative Gerry Matta, and he explained the concept and longevity of a metal roof, its energy-savings benefit, and more specifically, showed us the " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and Interlock design afforded by their product known on the internet as NewEnglandsBestRoof.com. After hearing the sales presentation, my wife and I were intent on seeing two homes within 20 miles of our home that had the same color metal roof we anticipated purchasing for our home. Let me tell you, after viewing the exterior of those homes, we definitely had made up our minds that we were going to be the first in our neighborhood with an Interlock ">shingle metal roof because it was going to afford us with fabulous curb appeal for our home. Well, now that the stripping off of the deteriorating fibreglass shingles and the installation of the "" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">tile red" Interlock shingle has been completed, our home is now a showcase for the metal roof industry. We have had numerous compliments from family and neighbors regarding the beauty of the home with the new Interlock shingle installed. We have had many vehicles pass roadside and slow down to view our home and several inquiries form those motorists as to where we obtained the beautiful roof. Thank you to Interlock Industries, Inc. for creating a product that allows my family to have the satisfaction to know that we will never have to replace roof shingles again, will save money on yearly heating and cooling bills, and, more importantly, have a home that truly has a dynamic curb appeal. It's just beautiful!! Thanks again.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Liberty Heights

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Liberty Heights, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Liberty Heights.

Will a metal roof hold up through Massachusetts winters with all that freeze-thaw cycling?

Yes. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature swings, but it doesn't degrade or crack the way asphalt shingles do after 92 freeze-thaw cycles per year. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) flexes without permanent damage, and the oxide layer that forms on the surface actually self-heals when scratched. With about 77 cm of snow and mean temps around 10.7°C, your roof experiences constant seasonal stress—but aluminum's material properties make it naturally suited for exactly these conditions. The Guardian Warranty covers cracking and splitting across the original owner's lifetime.

How does metal roofing handle heavy snow loads and ice dam formation?

The smooth, slick surface of metal panels sheds snow and ice faster than asphalt, which reduces ice dam risk. Liberty Heights gets about 77 cm of snow annually, and that weight sits much differently on metal than it would on traditional materials. Because Interlock panels weigh only 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Shingle profile—and the Tile is roughly 96% lighter than actual concrete or clay tile—your roof handles snow loads without requiring structural reinforcement. You can add snow guards if your roof pitch is steep; the four-way interlocking design anchors them securely. The result is better drainage, less pooling, and fewer of the ice dams that plague heavier roofs in your climate.

Do metal roofs really stay dry in heavy rain, or do they leak at the seams?

The four-way interlocking aluminum panels seal water out completely—each panel overlaps and locks to its neighbors on all four sides, creating a unified weather barrier. With about 1117 mm of rain per year in your area, that overlap matters. Water runs off the steep panel profiles (Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle, or Tile) and drains quickly through the joints; nothing ponds or seeps through the seams the way it can with traditional shingles. Install the roof over a solid deck with standard underlayment, and you get the same leak protection as asphalt with a profile that sheds water faster. The interlocking mechanism also resists water infiltration during high-wind rain events, when gusts reach 127 km/h.

Can metal roofing survive the wind gusts that hit Massachusetts in a storm?

Yes. Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed per spec, and Liberty Heights sees typical gusts around 127 km/h. The four-way interlocking design is the difference—each panel locks to the ones above, below, and on both sides, so wind can't peel panels back like it does with nailed shingles. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms this performance under IBC/IRC wind loads. Your panels stay locked in place through the seasonal storms your region experiences. If you have concerns about specific exposure, proper fastening and solid deck installation give you full warranty coverage.

Why should I choose aluminum instead of steel metal roofing, especially near salt air?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that corrodes. Steel roofs require constant maintenance to prevent rust, especially in humid climates like Massachusetts where you see about 1117 mm of rain yearly. Aluminum naturally forms a thin oxide layer that protects the metal underneath; if that layer gets scratched, it reforms automatically. Interlock panels use roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum coated with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon on both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214 / D2244). The company has installed these panels from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station since 1998. You get rust-free performance across any New England climate.

Is a metal roof worth the cost compared to replacing asphalt shingles every 20 years?

Yes, when you count the total cost over 50+ years. Asphalt shingles last 15–20 years and generate landfill waste; you replace them 2–3 times in the lifespan of one metal roof. Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, plus it transfers once—giving the next owner 50 years from completion. That's one roof for your lifetime and your buyer's decades. Right now, Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation. The lightweight aluminum means no structural reinforcement costs either. When you stop buying replacement roofs every two decades, metal roof math wins.

Can my existing roof structure handle metal roofing, or do I need expensive reinforcement?

Most homes don't need any structural work. The Interlock Mediterranean Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than actual concrete or clay tile. Even the heaviest Interlock profile is still far lighter than what traditional materials demand. Since you can install metal panels directly over your existing roof (no tear-off required), your structure carries minimal additional load. The ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 confirms this lightweight performance. Unless your home has documented structural defects or decay, no reinforcement is needed. This saves thousands compared to slate or real tile alternatives, and it means your roofer can usually complete installation faster because there's no structural engineer involvement.

Does a metal roof hold up to hail, and could it lower my insurance premiums?

Absolutely. Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 means the roof withstood a 1.5-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet. Many insurers recognize this and offer discounts on homeowner premiums for impact-resistant roofing. Your agent can verify your specific policy, but non-combustible, Class 4-rated roofs often qualify for breaks. When you pair that with the lifetime limited warranty and zero-maintenance aluminum construction, you get both lower replacement-cost risk and potential insurance savings. That's tangible value on top of durability.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Liberty Heights, and how long have they been in business?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. serves your region and has since 1999—more than 25 years of regional experience. They're familiar with Hampden County climate challenges, building codes, and homeowner needs. The parent company manufactures panels in Delta, BC, and has been doing so since 1998, so your installer has access to factory support, warranty administration, and technical expertise. When you call for a quote, you're talking to people who know Liberty Heights winters, the 77 cm of annual snow, and freeze-thaw cycles. They can discuss financing (no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off) and walk you through the installation timeline. That combination of local presence and manufacturer backing matters when you're committing to a 50-year roof.

How much upkeep does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood shake?

Essentially none. Aluminum doesn't rot, split, curl, or require re-coating like asphalt and wood do. You won't climb a ladder to replace cracked or missing shingles after freeze-thaw cycles or high wind. Gutters still need seasonal cleaning, but the roof itself is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance. Asphalt shingles demand regular inspection and develop problems after 92 freeze-thaw days per year; wood shake splits and checks in the sun and damp. Interlock aluminum stays dimensionally stable through all of that. The 30-year Alunar coating warranty protects against chalking and fading, so color holds. Over 50 years, you might rinse accumulated debris off after a storm, but that's it. No moss treatment, no repairs, no surprises.
