Review: May 28, 2007

This past Fall I began soliciting bids for stripping off two layers of shingles on my 23-year old shingle family home and replacing the "worn" shingles with a new layer of fiberglass shingle. You may ask, since the home was "only" 23 years old, why there was already two layers of shingles and how come the top layer was now in need of replacement! Believe me, I was asking the same questions. Granted, we had not paid (directly) for either layer of shingle since they both were on the home when we purchased it, but it was still a concern of mine with respect to the fiberglass shingle industry. My wife and I have owned this home for nine years and, when we initially moved in, we had the home vinyl-sided and replaced most of the windows with energy efficient, up-and-down windows as opposed to the then crank-out windows. The then existing roof shingles had excellent curl-appeal when viewed against the newly installed vinyl siding and window shutters, so much so that passersby thought we had the roof re-shingled as well. So, in our search for new shingle, we sought out a shingle that would have that same curb appeal as well as longevity. Well, we could not find anything that came close to providing us with the idea that, "Yeah, this one will look great on our home and last a long time." This Spring I responded to a newspaper advertisement I'd seen and a mailing that I received regarding the installation of a ">metal roof. Certainly, installation of a ">metal roof in our "neck of the woods," where there is some pricey real estate, was something of an oddity. However, I did some research on ">metal roofs over the Internet and found myself intrigued and please by what I read. My wife and I met with Interlock Industries, Inc. sales representative Gerry Matta, and he explained the concept and longevity of a metal roof, its energy-savings benefit, and more specifically, showed us the " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and Interlock design afforded by their product known on the internet as NewEnglandsBestRoof.com. After hearing the sales presentation, my wife and I were intent on seeing two homes within 20 miles of our home that had the same color metal roof we anticipated purchasing for our home. Let me tell you, after viewing the exterior of those homes, we definitely had made up our minds that we were going to be the first in our neighborhood with an Interlock ">shingle metal roof because it was going to afford us with fabulous curb appeal for our home. Well, now that the stripping off of the deteriorating fibreglass shingles and the installation of the "" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">tile red" Interlock shingle has been completed, our home is now a showcase for the metal roof industry. We have had numerous compliments from family and neighbors regarding the beauty of the home with the new Interlock shingle installed. We have had many vehicles pass roadside and slow down to view our home and several inquiries form those motorists as to where we obtained the beautiful roof. Thank you to Interlock Industries, Inc. for creating a product that allows my family to have the satisfaction to know that we will never have to replace roof shingles again, will save money on yearly heating and cooling bills, and, more importantly, have a home that truly has a dynamic curb appeal. It's just beautiful!! Thanks again.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Forest Park

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Forest Park, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Forest Park.

Will a metal roof handle Forest Park's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or failing?

Yes — aluminum's crystalline structure and the four-way interlocking panel system are built for exactly this. Forest Park experiences about 92 freeze-thaw days per year, which can shatter wood shingles and crack slate, but aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without splintering, cracking, or losing integrity. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is rated 30 years against degradation under this cycling stress. Unlike asphalt, which becomes brittle in freeze cycles, aluminum stays flexible.

How does a metal roof perform under Forest Park's annual snowfall?

Forest Park averages about 77 centimeters of snow yearly, and metal roofing sheds it efficiently because the smooth or textured aluminum surface doesn't trap moisture the way asphalt does. The four-way interlocking system prevents snow from creeping under panel edges. Ice dams form when heat melts snow unevenly — metal's high solar reflectance (up to 0.55 in certain energy-efficiency colors) naturally reduces that heat buildup. Add optional snow guards if you want to control slides onto walkways; the lightweight panels support them without structural reinforcement.

Is a metal roof reliable in heavy rain, or does water get through the seams?

The four-way interlocking design means water cannot get through seams — the overlaps are mechanical, not sealant-dependent. Forest Park receives about 1117 millimeters of rain annually. Each panel locks into its neighbors on all four sides; standing water drains immediately off the slope and out the gutters. Underlayment and the solid deck underneath (whether new or over your existing roof) provide a second line of defense. Properly installed, these roofs outperform composition shingles, which develop pinhole leaks after 15–20 years.

Can an Interlock metal roof handle New England wind gusts?

Absolutely — the four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), and Forest Park's typical gusts reach about 127 km/h. That margin of safety is there because the locks hold each panel to its neighbors, not just to the deck. In the 1999 Worcester tornado, metal roofs in the path survived where asphalt and wood did not. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms the wind-load performance to code. You get protection built into the seams, not added afterward with additional fasteners.

Will hail damage my metal roof, and can it lower my homeowner's insurance?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating — the highest available — meaning the panels survive hailstones up to 1.5 inches without perforation, and the warranty covers impact damage even beyond that size. Forest Park sits in a region where occasional severe thunderstorms and hail are part of spring and summer, and many insurers offer discounts on premiums when you install Class 4-rated roofing. Aluminum's hardness simply resists the impact where composition shingles bruise and split. Document the UL rating in your insurance file; it can mean real money back.

Why is aluminum better than steel roofing for a climate like Massachusetts?

Steel contains iron, which rusts the moment protective coatings wear thin — especially in a wet climate where Forest Park gets 1117 millimeters of rain per year. Aluminum is iron-free and cannot rust; instead, it forms a self-healing oxide layer that seals itself when scratched or dented. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is applied to both sides of each panel for extra protection in salt-air regions, and it's warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. After 30 years, the underlying aluminum is still intact. Steel would be rusting internally by then.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure to install metal roofing?

No structural reinforcement is needed — and that saves thousands. Interlock metal roofing is extraordinarily light: the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at about 0.59 pounds per square foot, roughly 96% lighter than actual clay or concrete tile. Forest Park homes built for traditional asphalt shingles (about 2.5–4 pounds per square foot) can support metal roofing many times over. The lightweight panels also mean you can install over most existing roofs without tearing off the old shingles, cutting labor costs and eliminating a full dumpster load to the landfill.

What maintenance does a metal roof actually need compared to asphalt or wood?

Metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance after installation — no re-sealing, no tar patching, no seasonal inspections for splits or curling. Asphalt shingles crack and curl with freeze-thaw cycling (Forest Park averages 92 freeze-thaw days yearly), wood shakes rot in the damp Massachusetts climate, and tile cracks under impact and ice load. Metal panels don't absorb moisture, don't degrade from UV, and the four-way locks keep debris from collecting where water sits. Gutters and flashing need standard care, but the roofing surface itself stays intact for decades without you touching it.

Can a metal roof actually lower cooling costs in summer?

Yes — energy-efficient Interlock colors have thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and solar reflectance as high as 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), meaning they bounce heat away instead of absorbing it the way dark asphalt does. Over a year with about 3077 hours of sunshine in Forest Park, that difference compounds. Cooler attic temperatures mean your air conditioning doesn't work as hard. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms this measurable performance. In winter, the reflectance doesn't block solar gains on south-facing slopes, so you're not sacrificing passive heating either — it's a year-round win in a variable New England climate.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost, or is it just expensive?

Metal roofing costs more initially but is the last roof you'll buy. Asphalt shingles need replacement every 15–20 years; over 50 years, that's three replacements, three tear-offs, three dumpster loads. Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, plus transferable for 50 years to the next owner — documentation of durability that protects your investment. The current promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation. When you factor in zero maintenance, no leak repairs, no early replacement, and the resale value gain, the math favors metal across the life of your home.
