Review: May 28, 2007

This past Fall I began soliciting bids for stripping off two layers of shingles on my 23-year old shingle family home and replacing the "worn" shingles with a new layer of fiberglass shingle. You may ask, since the home was "only" 23 years old, why there was already two layers of shingles and how come the top layer was now in need of replacement! Believe me, I was asking the same questions. Granted, we had not paid (directly) for either layer of shingle since they both were on the home when we purchased it, but it was still a concern of mine with respect to the fiberglass shingle industry. My wife and I have owned this home for nine years and, when we initially moved in, we had the home vinyl-sided and replaced most of the windows with energy efficient, up-and-down windows as opposed to the then crank-out windows. The then existing roof shingles had excellent curl-appeal when viewed against the newly installed vinyl siding and window shutters, so much so that passersby thought we had the roof re-shingled as well. So, in our search for new shingle, we sought out a shingle that would have that same curb appeal as well as longevity. Well, we could not find anything that came close to providing us with the idea that, "Yeah, this one will look great on our home and last a long time." This Spring I responded to a newspaper advertisement I'd seen and a mailing that I received regarding the installation of a ">metal roof. Certainly, installation of a ">metal roof in our "neck of the woods," where there is some pricey real estate, was something of an oddity. However, I did some research on ">metal roofs over the Internet and found myself intrigued and please by what I read. My wife and I met with Interlock Industries, Inc. sales representative Gerry Matta, and he explained the concept and longevity of a metal roof, its energy-savings benefit, and more specifically, showed us the " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and Interlock design afforded by their product known on the internet as NewEnglandsBestRoof.com. After hearing the sales presentation, my wife and I were intent on seeing two homes within 20 miles of our home that had the same color metal roof we anticipated purchasing for our home. Let me tell you, after viewing the exterior of those homes, we definitely had made up our minds that we were going to be the first in our neighborhood with an Interlock ">shingle metal roof because it was going to afford us with fabulous curb appeal for our home. Well, now that the stripping off of the deteriorating fibreglass shingles and the installation of the "" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">tile red" Interlock shingle has been completed, our home is now a showcase for the metal roof industry. We have had numerous compliments from family and neighbors regarding the beauty of the home with the new Interlock shingle installed. We have had many vehicles pass roadside and slow down to view our home and several inquiries form those motorists as to where we obtained the beautiful roof. Thank you to Interlock Industries, Inc. for creating a product that allows my family to have the satisfaction to know that we will never have to replace roof shingles again, will save money on yearly heating and cooling bills, and, more importantly, have a home that truly has a dynamic curb appeal. It's just beautiful!! Thanks again.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Pine Point

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Pine Point, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Pine Point.

Does a metal roof handle Pine Point's snow and ice buildup better than asphalt?

Yes—aluminum's smooth, interlocking panels shed snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt shingles, which trap moisture and freeze solid. With about 77 cm of snow annually and roughly 92 freeze-thaw cycles per year here, that matters. The panel's slick surface prevents ice dams from forming at your gutters, and the lightweight design means no structural reinforcement is needed even when snow loads accumulate. You can add snow guards if you prefer controlled melting.

How does aluminum hold up to Pine Point's freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw conditions because it has no iron and cannot rust—the oxide layer that forms on its surface actually self-heals when scratched, so it won't degrade over repeated seasonal stress. With about 92 freeze-thaw days per year in this region, this matters far more than it does in stable climates. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, protects against moisture damage that would crack asphalt or cause wood shingles to split. After 25+ years of New England winters, your roof stays intact.

Can a metal roof really keep water out during Pine Point's heavy rain?

The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered so water cannot penetrate the seams—each panel locks into its neighbor on all four sides, directing rainfall downward and off your roof. Pine Point averages about 1117 mm of rain annually, and metal's solid deck installation with an underlayment barrier stops any water from reaching your home's interior. The sealed joints outperform asphalt, where granule loss and shingle separation create leak paths over time. You get the same leak protection as a properly installed standing seam—without the premium price.

Will a metal roof stay on during Pine Point's winter gusts?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking design is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification. Pine Point experiences typical gusts around 127 km/h (about 79 mph), well within the roof's rated capacity. The panels lock together mechanically, so individual shingles cannot lift or separate like asphalt shingles do in high wind. Even during the region's most severe winter storms, the interlocking system holds fast, and the warranty covers the installation.

Can my Pine Point home support a metal roof without expensive structural work?

Almost certainly—the Shake profile weighs just 0.58 lb/sq ft and the Tile profile about 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Your home's existing frame already supports asphalt shingles plus snow load (Pine Point averages about 77 cm annually), so aluminum's featherweight installation requires no structural reinforcement. Most homes can install it directly over an existing roof, saving you tear-off labor and landfill costs. A local inspection confirms your specific situation, but lightweight aluminum is one of the rare roofing materials that improves structural efficiency.

Is aluminum roofing actually rust-proof, or is that marketing?

It is genuinely rust-proof—aluminum contains no iron, so rust is chemically impossible. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), the same material trusted in coastal salt-air installations and even an Antarctic research station. When aluminum oxidizes, it forms a thin, self-healing protective layer that prevents further corrosion. This matters in Pine Point's freeze-thaw environment, where moisture cycling accelerates rust in steel roofing. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating adds a second layer of defense, warranted 30 years. You'll never face rust repair.

Does a metal roof actually save money on cooling in New England?

Yes, if you choose an energy-efficient color. Interlock's reflective coatings achieve up to 0.55 initial solar reflectance and 0.84 thermal emissivity, meaning the roof bounces heat away rather than absorbing it like asphalt does. In Pine Point, with about 3077 sunshine hours annually, that reflectance reduces cooling demand in summer and keeps your attic cooler year-round. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating quantifies this benefit. Combined with the lightweight aluminum's minimal thermal mass, you'll see lower air-conditioning costs and reduced strain on your HVAC system compared to traditional dark asphalt.

Is a metal roof better in hail, and can it lower my homeowner's insurance?

Yes on both counts. Interlock holds a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. The four-way interlocking panels distribute impact force across the system so individual strikes don't create weak points. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer discounts on policies for metal roofs; contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and the lifetime limited Guardian Warranty to discuss your premium. The non-prorated coverage for impact resistance gives underwriters confidence.

How much maintenance does a metal roof actually need?

Metal roofing requires far less maintenance than asphalt, wood, or tile. Unlike asphalt, aluminum doesn't lose granules, crack, or curl—eliminating the need for seasonal inspections and patching. Wood shingles demand regular treatment to prevent rot and splitting, especially in Pine Point's 92 annual freeze-thaw cycles. Tile must be individually replaced when pieces crack, and its weight limits access for cleaning. Interlock's metal panels need only occasional gutter cleaning and a visual inspection, verified by CALGreen as reduced-maintenance. Over a 50+ year lifespan, that's decades of saved labor, no tear-offs, and no recurring repairs.

What makes the Interlock warranty better than asphalt's 20-year promise?

The Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner—meaning there's no dollar cap and no reduced benefit as the roof ages. It covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance, with no exclusions for normal weather. When you sell, the warranty transfers once, giving the next owner 50 years from completion. Asphalt warranties shrink every year and rarely cover labor. With Interlock installed in 1998 still performing flawlessly, and the aluminum's self-healing oxide layer ensuring durability through Pine Point's 77 cm annual snowfall and 92 freeze-thaw days, this is genuinely the last roof you'll buy.
