Review: May 28, 2007

This past Fall I began soliciting bids for stripping off two layers of shingles on my 23-year old shingle family home and replacing the "worn" shingles with a new layer of fiberglass shingle. You may ask, since the home was "only" 23 years old, why there was already two layers of shingles and how come the top layer was now in need of replacement! Believe me, I was asking the same questions. Granted, we had not paid (directly) for either layer of shingle since they both were on the home when we purchased it, but it was still a concern of mine with respect to the fiberglass shingle industry. My wife and I have owned this home for nine years and, when we initially moved in, we had the home vinyl-sided and replaced most of the windows with energy efficient, up-and-down windows as opposed to the then crank-out windows. The then existing roof shingles had excellent curl-appeal when viewed against the newly installed vinyl siding and window shutters, so much so that passersby thought we had the roof re-shingled as well. So, in our search for new shingle, we sought out a shingle that would have that same curb appeal as well as longevity. Well, we could not find anything that came close to providing us with the idea that, "Yeah, this one will look great on our home and last a long time." This Spring I responded to a newspaper advertisement I'd seen and a mailing that I received regarding the installation of a ">metal roof. Certainly, installation of a ">metal roof in our "neck of the woods," where there is some pricey real estate, was something of an oddity. However, I did some research on ">metal roofs over the Internet and found myself intrigued and please by what I read. My wife and I met with Interlock Industries, Inc. sales representative Gerry Matta, and he explained the concept and longevity of a metal roof, its energy-savings benefit, and more specifically, showed us the " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and Interlock design afforded by their product known on the internet as NewEnglandsBestRoof.com. After hearing the sales presentation, my wife and I were intent on seeing two homes within 20 miles of our home that had the same color metal roof we anticipated purchasing for our home. Let me tell you, after viewing the exterior of those homes, we definitely had made up our minds that we were going to be the first in our neighborhood with an Interlock ">shingle metal roof because it was going to afford us with fabulous curb appeal for our home. Well, now that the stripping off of the deteriorating fibreglass shingles and the installation of the "" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">tile red" Interlock shingle has been completed, our home is now a showcase for the metal roof industry. We have had numerous compliments from family and neighbors regarding the beauty of the home with the new Interlock shingle installed. We have had many vehicles pass roadside and slow down to view our home and several inquiries form those motorists as to where we obtained the beautiful roof. Thank you to Interlock Industries, Inc. for creating a product that allows my family to have the satisfaction to know that we will never have to replace roof shingles again, will save money on yearly heating and cooling bills, and, more importantly, have a home that truly has a dynamic curb appeal. It's just beautiful!! Thanks again.

I would have selected Interlock if it was actually 2 to 3 times the cost of an asphalt roof. From my perspective, the labor cost must be out of line for our region. The quote for a slate roof was less than Interlock in our area.

They need a project manager on-site somewhere in the process. Feedback for #1 - We are happy with the product, but not happy with the process in terms of zero communication after they started working on the roof. No one spoke English.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in East Springfield

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in East Springfield, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in East Springfield.

Will a metal roof handle Massachusetts freeze-thaw cycles better than asphalt?

Yes, aluminum's non-porous structure means freeze-thaw cycling won't degrade it the way it breaks down asphalt and shingles. East Springfield experiences about 92 freeze-thaw days per year, which accelerates granule loss and cracking on traditional roofs. Aluminum alloy (ASTM B209 3105-H24) expands and contracts uniformly without splitting or curling, and its self-healing oxide layer resists the micro-fractures that winter weather creates. You're essentially replacing a material that weakens with every thaw with one engineered to outlast it.

How does an Interlock metal roof handle the snow load in East Springfield?

The Interlock Shake profile weighs just 0.58 lb/sq ft—so light that your existing roof structure handles it without reinforcement, even as snow accumulates. East Springfield averages about 77 cm of snow per year; that weight sits safely on aluminum that won't sag or rot from moisture trapped underneath. The four-way interlocking panels keep water from working sideways during thaw cycles, and optional snow guards anchor easily to the lightweight system. You get the durability of metal without the structural headaches that slate or concrete tile demand.

Does heavy rain leak through metal roof seams or the interlocking system?

No—the four-way interlocking design sheds water before it reaches seams, and the panels' overlap geometry matches how water naturally flows downhill. East Springfield receives approximately 1117 mm of rain yearly, and installers pair the interlocks with a solid deck and underlayment, creating the same leak protection as asphalt but without granule washout or shingle deterioration. The ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation confirms compliance with IBC/IRC water-shedding requirements. Over a 50-year lifespan, a metal roof's sealing integrity remains constant—asphalt's degrades.

Why can't aluminum roofing rust the way steel does?

Aluminum contains no iron, so rust—which requires iron oxidation—is chemically impossible. Instead, aluminum develops a microscopic oxide layer that actually protects it and self-heals when scratched. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish adds a second defense, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. Even in humid climates with 1117 mm annual rainfall and rapid temperature swings between freeze-thaw days, the material's composition ensures it never corrodes like steel. That's why Interlock panels have been installed from salt-air coastal homes to an Antarctic research station without corrosion failure.

Will a metal roof stay on in East Springfield's winter wind gusts?

Yes—the four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to spec. East Springfield sees typical daily winds around 17 km/h with gusts reaching 127 km/h, well below that threshold. The interlocks' mechanical engagement means each panel locks to its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof system rather than relying on fasteners alone. Unlike asphalt shingles, which peel and curl in repeated gusts, aluminum's rigidity and locking geometry keep panels seated year after year through Hampden County winters.

Does Interlock metal roofing reduce hail damage claims?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That credential can qualify homeowners for insurance discounts on premiums, offsetting installation costs faster. Unlike asphalt, which dents and loses granules from small hail, or wood shakes, which crack and split, aluminum's non-combustible alloy (ASTM B209) absorbs impact without permanent deformation or material loss. Check with your insurer about Class 4 certification discounts; many carriers recognize the reduced claim risk.

How much maintenance does a metal roof actually need?

Virtually none compared to asphalt or wood. Asphalt shingles lose granules every winter as freeze-thaw cycles (92 per year in East Springfield) weaken the binder, requiring inspections and patching. Wood shakes rot and split. Aluminum doesn't decompose, doesn't granulate, doesn't curl. The Alunar finish is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance and warranted 30 years. Occasional leaf clearing and debris removal keep gutters flowing, but the roof itself requires no sealant reapplication, no moss treatment, and no seasonal inspection for damage. That's time and money reclaimed over the roof's lifetime.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost versus replacing asphalt every 15–20 years?

Over 50 years, you'll replace asphalt 2–3 times, each replacement involving tear-off labor, hauling costs, and new installation. Interlock's lifetime limited warranty for the original owner and 50-year transferable coverage mean one installation outlasts multiple asphalt cycles. Factor in avoided maintenance, no emergency repairs from freeze-thaw failure (92 days per year), and energy savings from energy-efficient colors that reflect heat in summer. Current financing offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation. The math favors metal when you consider the total-cost-of-ownership and transfer value to the next owner.

Can my house handle metal roofing, or do I need to reinforce the frame?

Most homes need zero structural reinforcement. The Interlock Tile profile—which replicates high-end tile aesthetics—weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft, approximately 96% lighter than real concrete or clay tile. Slate and Cedar Shingle profiles are even lighter. Your framing easily supports that load; in fact, Interlock installs directly over existing asphalt, avoiding tear-off cost and waste. A structural engineer can confirm in minutes, but most East Springfield homes built to code handle metal without modification. That's the advantage of aluminum's density: you get traditional-material elegance without the structural bills that real stone or tile demand.
