Review: May 28, 2007

This past Fall I began soliciting bids for stripping off two layers of shingles on my 23-year old shingle family home and replacing the "worn" shingles with a new layer of fiberglass shingle. You may ask, since the home was "only" 23 years old, why there was already two layers of shingles and how come the top layer was now in need of replacement! Believe me, I was asking the same questions. Granted, we had not paid (directly) for either layer of shingle since they both were on the home when we purchased it, but it was still a concern of mine with respect to the fiberglass shingle industry. My wife and I have owned this home for nine years and, when we initially moved in, we had the home vinyl-sided and replaced most of the windows with energy efficient, up-and-down windows as opposed to the then crank-out windows. The then existing roof shingles had excellent curl-appeal when viewed against the newly installed vinyl siding and window shutters, so much so that passersby thought we had the roof re-shingled as well. So, in our search for new shingle, we sought out a shingle that would have that same curb appeal as well as longevity. Well, we could not find anything that came close to providing us with the idea that, "Yeah, this one will look great on our home and last a long time." This Spring I responded to a newspaper advertisement I'd seen and a mailing that I received regarding the installation of a ">metal roof. Certainly, installation of a ">metal roof in our "neck of the woods," where there is some pricey real estate, was something of an oddity. However, I did some research on ">metal roofs over the Internet and found myself intrigued and please by what I read. My wife and I met with Interlock Industries, Inc. sales representative Gerry Matta, and he explained the concept and longevity of a metal roof, its energy-savings benefit, and more specifically, showed us the " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">colors and Interlock design afforded by their product known on the internet as NewEnglandsBestRoof.com. After hearing the sales presentation, my wife and I were intent on seeing two homes within 20 miles of our home that had the same color metal roof we anticipated purchasing for our home. Let me tell you, after viewing the exterior of those homes, we definitely had made up our minds that we were going to be the first in our neighborhood with an Interlock ">shingle metal roof because it was going to afford us with fabulous curb appeal for our home. Well, now that the stripping off of the deteriorating fibreglass shingles and the installation of the "" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">tile red" Interlock shingle has been completed, our home is now a showcase for the metal roof industry. We have had numerous compliments from family and neighbors regarding the beauty of the home with the new Interlock shingle installed. We have had many vehicles pass roadside and slow down to view our home and several inquiries form those motorists as to where we obtained the beautiful roof. Thank you to Interlock Industries, Inc. for creating a product that allows my family to have the satisfaction to know that we will never have to replace roof shingles again, will save money on yearly heating and cooling bills, and, more importantly, have a home that truly has a dynamic curb appeal. It's just beautiful!! Thanks again.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Longmeadow

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Longmeadow.

Does a metal roof handle Longmeadow's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum metal roofing actually performs exceptionally well in your climate. Longmeadow receives about 77 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 92 freeze-thaw days per year. Aluminum's smooth, non-porous surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt, which traps moisture. The four-way interlocking panels prevent water infiltration even during the thaw cycles that damage traditional shingles. Unlike wood shake or slate, aluminum won't split or crack from repeated freezing, and it carries a lifetime limited warranty covering splitting and cracking—giving you confidence through every New England winter.

Why won't an aluminum metal roof rust like steel roofing?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes when exposed to moisture. Instead, aluminum naturally forms a thin, invisible oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. If that layer is scratched, it self-heals automatically. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy in Interlock panels is then coated with Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. This dual-layer protection means your roof won't corrode during Longmeadow's 1117 mm of annual rainfall, whether from rain, snowmelt, or roof valleys where moisture collects.

How does aluminum roofing survive freeze-thaw cycling better than asphalt or wood?

Aluminum is dimensionally stable—it doesn't absorb water and won't swell, crack, or split when frozen. With about 92 freeze-thaw days annually in Longmeadow, materials like asphalt shingles and wood shake deteriorate rapidly as water enters, freezes, expands, and thaws repeatedly. Aluminum panels expand and contract minimally with temperature, and the four-way interlocking design prevents water from ever reaching the substrate. The lifetime limited warranty covers cracking and splitting, but honestly, the material's chemistry means these failures are extremely rare. Steel would eventually rust from freeze-thaw salt exposure; aluminum simply ages gracefully.

Can my existing roof structure handle a metal roof, or do I need reinforcement?

Your existing structure almost certainly needs no reinforcement. The Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb per square foot, making it roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—and comparable to standard asphalt shingles. This light weight allows installation directly over most existing roofs, whether asphalt or wood. Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has installed countless roofs across the region since 1999 without structural upgrades. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms the load specifications for residential framing. A typical Longmeadow home roof can transition to metal roofing without any structural modifications, keeping your installation cost efficient.

Will a metal roof blow off in Longmeadow's wind gusts?

No—the panels are engineered to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph, far exceeding Longmeadow's typical gusts. Local wind data shows average gusts around 127 km/h (79 mph), well within the warranty limit. The four-way interlocking design locks each panel to its neighbors in all directions, creating a continuous mechanical bond that distributes wind load across the entire roof system. Unlike asphalt shingles, which lift and tear in strong gusts, metal panels move as one unified assembly. When installed to specification by Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc., your roof carries a 120 mph wind warranty—peace of mind even during the nor'easters and spring storms typical of this region.

Does hail damage metal roofing, and can I get an insurance discount?

Interlock panels achieve UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This is the same rating demanded by insurers in Colorado and the hail belt, where impact resistance directly affects claims history. Many homeowners have qualified for insurance discounts because metal roofing demonstrably reduces hail claim frequency and severity compared to asphalt or wood shake. Contact your insurer with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification; many carriers recognize this and adjust premiums accordingly. In Longmeadow, while severe hail is less common than in western regions, the Class 4 rating still positions you for potential savings.

How much will a metal roof reduce my cooling costs in summer?

Your cooling costs can drop significantly with reflective metal roofing. energy-efficient colors achieve solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84—meaning these profiles bounce heat back to the sky rather than absorbing it like dark asphalt. With about 3077 annual sunshine hours in Longmeadow, this reflectivity compounds over months and years. Cool Roof Rating Council testing shows metal roofing reflects heat that traditional asphalt absorbs and radiates into your home, reducing air-conditioning demand in summer. The Alunar® finish maintains this reflectance for 30 years, so the energy benefit doesn't fade as coatings degrade. Over a 50-year lifespan, the cumulative cooling savings often offset the initial material cost.

What maintenance does a metal roof actually need compared to asphalt or tile?

Metal roofing requires virtually no preventive maintenance—no moss treatment, no shingle replacement, no tar patching. Asphalt shingles need inspections every few years and spot repairs; wood shake requires annual cleaning and periodic replacement. Tile demands re-mortaring and cracked-tile replacement. Interlock aluminum simply needs occasional debris clearing from gutters and valleys, the same as any roof. The Alunar® coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, so color and finish remain stable. The CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance burden. Over Longmeadow's 77 cm annual snowfall and 1117 mm rain, the non-porous aluminum surface sheds water and won't trap moisture that feeds algae or mold—meaning you'll spend far less time and money on upkeep.

Is aluminum roofing actually more sustainable than asphalt shingles?

Yes—aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, and when it does reach a recycler, it commands material value instead of becoming landfill. Asphalt shingles are not economically recyclable; each tear-off sends tons to landfill, where they remain for decades. Manufacturing new asphalt involves petroleum extraction and energy-intensive processing. Aluminum roofing ends this cycle: your metal roof gets recycled into new products, automotive parts, or building materials. Over Longmeadow's 1117 mm annual rainfall and frequent freeze-thaw exposure, an asphalt roof typically lasts 20–25 years before tear-off; the aluminum roof lasts a lifetime, eliminating multiple landfill events in the same timeframe. This longevity—coupled with recyclability—makes aluminum the environmentally responsible choice for homeowners committed to reducing waste.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Metal roofing is a last-roof-you-buy investment that pays for itself over time. Initial material cost is higher than asphalt, but consider the full lifecycle: asphalt roofs need replacement every 20–25 years; Interlock's lifetime limited warranty and 50-year transfer warranty mean you'll never reroof your home. No tear-off costs, no disposal fees, no labor for multiple replacements. Energy savings from reflective coatings compound annually. Insurance discounts reduce premium burden. When you sell, metal roofing increases curb appeal and buyer confidence—no mysterious roof age or hidden decay like asphalt. Current promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation. Spread the cost with deferred payments, then amortize over decades of zero maintenance and energy gains. Over 50 years, aluminum costs far less than the three or four asphalt roofs it replaces.
