Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for North Star, Minnesota
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
The communication is incredibly poor, mind-boggling poor. I would suggest improving the communication. I still haven't received my warranty or final payment statement. The sign is still in my yard. I don't want to throw it away. It's a nice big sign, and I'm sure they would like to use it. I didn't threaten them with anything.
From the start to finish, we loved their work and communication. There were no nails, metal bits, or excessive noise. They listened to all questions and addressed our concerns. They were careful to make no promise of a start date that they could not fulfill. The rain this year made it hard to predict! I would do a commercial for them free to endorse their work and product!
They were courteous and very efficient. They did a fine job.
They could have improved on the scheduling.
I have no feedback for this rating. I felt they could have improved in communication, specifically a few days notice before the start date. There is nothing else I would like to share.
Communication about the date of the project was difficult to ascertain. The crew was very hard working, courteous and kept the job site clean, but they cut down branches of a tree in my front yard that made me extremely upset.
Our new roof looks fabulous! We’re optimistic that we’ll be equally as pleased with its performance. The installers were professional, safety conscious, and courtesy to our dog. We appreciate how understanding they were of our dog needing a little time in his yard when they were working in that side of the house.
They could have improved on communication.
Interlock Roofing- Minneapolis is a very professional team for installation and quality of material! We are very happy! Considering the quality and endurance of the material, the cost isn't high in the long run. It absolutely makes the product much more feasible and reasonable than shingles!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in North Star
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in North Star, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in North Star.
How does a metal roof handle North Star's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?
Aluminum's smooth, hard surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt shingles, and the four-way interlocking panels stay watertight through North Star's roughly 78 freeze-thaw days per year. Unlike asphalt, which degrades when water enters cracks and refreezes, aluminum expands and contracts minimally—the oxide layer never splits or curls. The Slate or Shake profiles can be ordered with snow guards if you prefer controlled shedding. With about 92 cm of snow annually and frequent thaw cycles, the real advantage is that ice dams form less readily on a smooth metal surface, and meltwater drains predictably.
Why can't aluminum metal roofing rust, and does that matter in Minnesota?
Aluminum contains no iron, so rust—the oxidation of iron—is physically impossible. Instead, aluminum forms a self-healing oxide layer that seals itself when scratched, protecting the metal beneath indefinitely. In Minnesota's wet climate, averaging 773 mm of rain yearly, this matters enormously: steel roofing requires constant paint maintenance and eventually fails, but aluminum stays stable. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (warranted 30 years against fading) adds a second barrier, meaning your roof resists both moisture and the salt-laden air that accelerates corrosion in neighboring regions. One purchase, no ongoing rust repairs.
Does freeze-thaw damage affect metal roofing in Le Sueur County winters?
Freeze-thaw cycles don't damage aluminum roofing because aluminum doesn't absorb water, so nothing inside the material expands and fractures as temperatures swing. Asphalt and wood shingles absorb moisture, freeze solid, thaw, and crack—a process that repeats about 78 times each North Star winter. Metal panels, by contrast, shed water immediately, and the four-way interlocking design keeps moisture out of the substrate. Even after decades of temperature swings from -15°C to +15°C and back, aluminum retains its structural integrity. The real durability test is the material's 25+ year track record in similar climates across North America.
Can a metal roof withstand North Star's wind gusts?
Yes—Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification, far exceeding North Star's typical daily gusts of about 23 km/h and the occasional gust to 103 km/h. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together mechanically, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than relying on nails or adhesive alone. The UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating demonstrates the system's rigidity and resilience. In a region where spring and fall storms can arrive suddenly, that warranty means your roof won't lift, shift, or leak during the gusts that do occur.
Does a metal roof shaped like slate or tile need structural reinforcement?
No reinforcement is needed. The Interlock Mediterranean Tile profile, which replicates the appearance of heavy clay or concrete tile, weighs only about 0.59 pounds per square foot—roughly 96% lighter than the real thing. This means it installs directly over most existing roofs and framing, saving thousands in structural upgrades. The Slate profile is even lighter at 0.41 lb/sq ft, similar to a standard asphalt roof. For North Star homeowners with older homes or those concerned about load capacity, aluminum's lightness is a genuine advantage: you get the architectural aesthetic of premium materials without engineering headaches or additional cost.
Will a metal roof reduce my insurance premiums after a hailstorm?
Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize this resilience and offer discounts for impact-resistant roofing. While premium reductions vary by carrier and policy, the Class 4 rating gives you strong documentation to present. Minnesota's hail season can arrive with little warning, and asphalt roofs regularly require replacement after single storms. With metal, you avoid that cycle entirely. Contact your insurer for specific discount details, but the combination of durability and proof of performance often translates to real savings.
Do metal roofs really keep a house cooler in summer?
energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect heat rather than absorb it, with initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84—measurements certified by the Cool Roof Rating Council. On a sunny day, a light-colored metal roof stays significantly cooler than asphalt (which absorbs 90% of solar energy). Though North Star averages about 3,209 sunshine hours yearly, summer cooling still matters for comfort and efficiency. Metal roofing won't transform your energy bill alone, but paired with proper attic ventilation, it reduces the thermal load your air conditioning must fight. Over a 30+ year roof life, that efficiency compounds—especially as electricity costs rise.
How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or tile?
Metal roofing requires far less maintenance than asphalt, wood, or tile. Aluminum doesn't rot, split, curl, or degrade in UV light; the Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against fading. Unlike asphalt shingles (which need sealing and regular inspection), wood shakes (which require treatment for rot and insects), or tile (which cracks and needs replacement), metal roofing simply sheds rain and snow and stays put. In North Star's wet climate (773 mm rain annually), the lack of water absorption means no moss, algae, or decay. Annual gutter cleaning and occasional inspection are standard; hose it off if debris collects. That's genuinely it.
What warranty does Interlock offer, and is it actually transferable?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original homeowner—covering rust, rot, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance for as long as you own the home. It's transferable once to the next owner, who receives 50 years of coverage from the completion date. This is rare in roofing: asphalt comes with 20-30 year prorated warranties that decline annually, and tile/slate carry no meaningful coverage. If you sell, the next buyer gets decades of protection backed by a manufacturer that's been building this product since 1998. That transferability adds genuine resale value and buyer confidence.
Who installs Interlock metal roofing in North Star?
Interlock Metal Roofing has served this region since 2001, offering installation, warranty support, and local knowledge specific to North Star and Le Sueur County's climate. A 20+ year local track record means the installer understands freeze-thaw demands, snow load management, and the specific wind patterns that shape the area. They're familiar with older home framing, local building codes (the system complies with ICC-ES ESR-1790, the current building standard), and can advise on profiles and colors that suit your home's style and neighborhood. Direct access to the installer—not a national call center—matters when questions arise post-installation or when your warranty is involved.
Is a metal roof a good choice for North Star’s climate?
Yes. North Star averages about 92 cm of snow, 773 mm of rain, roughly 78 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 103 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
