| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |

What our customers are saying:
From the start to finish, we loved their work and communication. There were no nails, metal bits, or excessive noise. They listened to all questions and addressed our concerns. They were careful to make no promise of a start date that they could not fulfill. The rain this year made it hard to predict! I would do a commercial for them free to endorse their work and product!
Hi Peter, we wanted to convey to you how much we love our new Interlock roof! Several of our neighbors and friends have said they do, too! We love the look of it, and are so impressed with how beautifully finished it is integrated into the flashing materials. The Interlock scheduling staff was great to work with, and we are so happy with Jessie and his Interlock installation team. They are true craftsmen, and part artists! We loved how they treated our home with respect, and were always willing to address any questions we had. We watched as they worked on items until they had them just right; when we asked about some areas of concern multiple members of the installation team converged on the item and came down to explain and even illustrate with photographs how it was addressed. Again, we couldn't be happier and are enjoying our Interlock roof!
To: Peter Brylinke My Interlock Shake style system was installed in June of 2019. We have now had it for an entire year and experienced the roof through all season, climate and weather conditions. Not only do we value the new look of our roof but the performance of the new roof has been exceptional. In the winter we have seen the snow pile up on it only to slide off as soon as the sun warms it enough. We have noticed a difference in the summers also with a cooler house. The roof has met all of our expectations and we are extremely happy with our decision to install this roof. Last summer when the workers were working on the roof, we were so pleased with the time and effort the workmen put into making sure all aspects of our roof were taken care of. They were courteous, hard working, respectful and considerate of our needs as homeowners. Carlos was instrumental in making sure that we were happy with every aspect of the work that was being done. In closing, we are very impressed with our roof and have recommended this same system to many people we know and many people who just " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">walk by and ask about it. We feel that we have made a great decision in putting this system on our home. ">" alt="Minneapolis MN 55409 Interlock Roof" width="2560" height="1920" />
Dear Peter, Thank you for your help with the installation and warranty transfer of our interlock roof. We have since sold our house and had good feedback about our roof from potential buyers. Neighbors loved our new roof and we had people drive by and actually snap pictures of it! You were right that the new roof would help sell our home! Thanks for all your help!
Dear Peter, I had Interlock Roofing install my black slate roof in the fall one year ago, and I couldn’t be happier! My roof still looks like new, and really stands out in my neighborhood. My old asphalt shingle roof was leaking. I had to shovel it every time it snowed because of " title="ice dams" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">ice dams in my older 1950’s house. I have had no issues at all with my new Interlock roof. It was so nice only to have to shovel my driveway this winter and not worry about snow on the roof. It all just slid off in only a few days after each snowfall. Also, the team that you had out to install my roof was exceptional. I was very impressed with the quality of the team that installed my roof. They were all very polite and worked well together as a team. They worked very hard, and got the job done, and completed in less than three days. I’ve never had to have anyone come back to fix or touch anything up. Thank you for the great job the Interlock team did to replace my roof. I would recommend Interlock to anyone needing a new roof without hesitation!
Dear Peter, We remain delighted with our new Interlock roof. It’s now been through 2 Minnesota winters, a hailstorm, and several rain deluges and is still the top-notch performer that you said it would be. Thank you for your and Interlock’s integrity throughout the sale, installation, and service of our roofing project. We remain convinced that Interlock is indeed “the Midwest’s Best Roof”.
Dear Peter, I Wanted to let you know how pleased I am with my new Interlock roof. It looks terrific, and I am anticipating that I will never have to roof rake my roof again now that your product has been installed. My house is small, a 3-bedroom rambler, but the visual impact the Interlock roof has added makes it look like a castle! All of the contact I have had with your personnel, from yourself to the lead foreman on the job and the men doing the install was pleasant and professional. The cleanup after the job was done was great and it only took 1-1/2 days for a complete tear-off to complete the installation. Please use this letter as a personal recommendation for your company and your product.
Dear Peter, Installing the Interlock roof on our home has completely transformed and improved our home’s appearance. The installation of the roof along with the greatly improved flashings have made a great difference. Because of that, our stucco was able to match our home so we look like new. An improvement I didn’t expect was the change in temperature of our second floor. Usually unbearable " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot on a 90-degree day. It’s now 10-15 degree cooler and livable. We also received a sizeable discount on our homeowners’ insurance because of the roof’s resistance to fire. We’re sure that having to “Never roof again” will help us sell our house should that be necessary. Thank you from two satisfied customers.
My Interlock ">Shake Style Roof in Aged Copper color was installed between December 21st and December 31st. Snow has covered most of the house and garage since it was installed, so I haven’t been able to enjoy the new look yet, but during the installation and before the snow it was obvious it I going to look great. I am glad I had them put Interlock ">Shakes on my 8ft x 16ft hip-roofed storage shed as well. There are a lot of huge oak trees close to my house and they had caused the heavy cedar hand-split shakes to deteriorate from moss growing on them. I knew I needed a roof that would not have this problem in the future. I am a retired mechanical engineer and had built the house and garage myself. I studied the specs on steel, stone coated steel and several aluminum style shakes, before finally settling on the Interlock product. I believe it will prove to be a good choice. I was very impressed with the quality and design of all the types of flashings, ridge vent, and fasteners that were expertly installed. I truly expect this roof to last and look great for generations. I was also very impressed with the crew who did the work under Juan and Carlos’ direction. They worked tirelessly in some difficult weather conditions and short daylight hours. A number of minor changes were made on the fly with gutters, snow guards and roof penetrations and they were all executed precisely. They were very careful in making sure the roofs were protected overnight, on weekends and during the Christmas holiday. They did a great job of cleaning up the difficult mess made removing the decayed shakes. I guess I won’t know for sure if there are any problems until we get some heavy rains in the spring and summer, but as of now, I would be happy to show the roof and talk to any prospective clients that are considering the Interlock product.
I love my new roof. It looks great and I know the house is in better shape without the heavy deteriorating asphalt shingles. My house is the only one on the block with no snow on the roof, and I can't wait to hear it in the rain
We are delighted with the workmanship and quality of our new roof. It has exceeded our expectations, and we highly recommend an Interlock Roof to anyone looking to replace an old roof.
Dear Interlock Roofing, We are writing to share with you our experience with you, your employees, and the new roof. We built a brand new home and moved in January 1997. Within a few years, we were experiencing shingles that were curling and being removed by the wind. By the summer of 2007, it was imperative that we re-roof our home. Fortunately, we saw an ad in the local paper for your product. Below are just a few of the benefits we appreciate with the aluminum interlocking roofing shingles: The service and attention to our roofing project by Scott Bohnen from signing the contract to follow-up after the installation. The fact that the workforce followed safety procedures by wearing safety gear (we have a steep roof). Daily attention to our project until it was completed, about one week in total. Aesthetically pleasing roof, with numerous comments by friends and neighbors and those just passing by. EXCELLENT CURB APPEAL! The roof is quieter during rain storms than with regular asphalt shingles. We often have to verify that it is raining by visually looking or going outside. The roof reflects light so that we have experienced reduced air conditioning costs in the summer. In the winter, the heating bill is reduced as well and that may be in part to the aluminum shingle along with the polypropylene lining between the old and new shingles. No matter the reason, our heating and cooling bills are reduced. The fact that the roof is aluminum and it can be recycled at the end of its life expectancy. The 50-year, one time transferable, warranty. We could go on and on but we are very pleased with our roof and thankful that we will never have to re-roof again. Thank you.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Ottawa
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Ottawa, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Ottawa.
Does metal roofing handle heavy snow buildup in Minnesota winters?
Yes — Interlock's four-way interlocking panels and lightweight construction actually excel in heavy snow. Ottawa averages about 92 cm of snow annually, but the real advantage is weight: Interlock Slate installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, so snow load never stresses your structure the way traditional slate or tile would. The panels shed snow efficiently, and optional snow guards keep accumulation where you want it. Your roof won't sag or require reinforcement, even after back-to-back winters.
Will freeze-thaw cycles crack or damage an aluminum metal roof?
Aluminum's oxide layer naturally self-heals when exposed to moisture, which makes it inherently resistant to freeze-thaw damage. Ottawa experiences roughly 78 freeze-thaw days per year — a real stress on asphalt and clay — but aluminum panels expand and contract without cracking or curling. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) adds a second defense layer. This is why Interlock panels have been installed in climates from coastal salt-air zones to Antarctic research stations without material failure from thermal cycling.
How does a metal roof perform in Minnesota wind and ice storms?
Interlock's four-way interlocking panel design resists wind speeds up to 120 mph, which far exceeds Ottawa's typical daily-max winds of about 23 km/h and even the extreme gusts around 103 km/h that appear in local weather records. The panels lock together mechanically, so wind pressure doesn't lift or separate them. You're not buying a roof that merely tolerates your climate — you're buying one engineered for conditions three to five times more severe, giving real peace of mind during spring and fall storm seasons.
Does metal roofing help with hail damage claims and insurance?
Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating — the highest available — and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer premium discounts; contact your agent with the UL rating and ESR-1790 code evaluation report for your home's quote. Unlike asphalt (which bruises and leaks after hail), aluminum's non-combustible structure and impact resistance reduce claim frequency and severity, which is why some carriers actively incentivize metal roofs in high-hail regions.
Can aluminum roofing rust, and is it better than steel in Minnesota's wet climate?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it forms a self-healing oxide layer that seals it against moisture — even in Minnesota's 773 mm of annual rainfall. Steel roofing requires constant paint maintenance to prevent rust; aluminum's Alunar coating (applied to both sides) is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading but does not degrade the underlying material. After 25+ years installed locally, Interlock panels show no rust, rot, or corrosion, making them the last word in durability for climates that alternate between wet springs and dry summers.
Is a metal roof worth the higher upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Metal roofing costs more upfront than asphalt, but the math over the roof's lifespan strongly favors metal. Asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years in Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycle (78 days annually); you'll tear it off and landfill it, then buy again. Interlock carries a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner and is 95% recyclable at end-of-life — you won't replace it. Factor in zero maintenance, no seasonal repairs, no gutter cleaning from shingle granule debris, and the single 50-year transferable warranty, and the cost-per-year is often lower than two asphalt replacements. It's genuinely the last roof you buy.
Do reflective metal roofs actually cut cooling costs in Minnesota?
Minnesota's climate isn't primarily about cooling — about 3209 sunshine hours annually means solar gain is real but moderate compared to southern states — yet reflective coatings still matter. Interlock's energy-efficient colors achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, which means they reflect heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into your attic. In spring and summer, this reduces cooling load and keeps attic temperatures lower, cutting AC runtime. The payoff is subtle but measurable, and it costs nothing extra to choose an energy-efficiency finish.
Can I install a metal tile roof over my existing asphalt shingles without structural work?
Yes — Interlock Mediterranean Tile weighs just 0.59 lb/sq ft, about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, so no roof framing reinforcement is needed. You can install it over most existing asphalt roofs, saving thousands in demolition and structural upgrades that traditional tile demands. This also means faster installation and less disruption to your home. The four-way interlocking system distributes the light load evenly, so even older homes with standard framing can support a high-style tile look without inspection delays or engineering reports.
Does Interlock Metal Roofing serve Ottawa, Minnesota?
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing has served the Le Sueur County region since 2001, with crews experienced in Minnesota's climate challenges — heavy snow, freeze-thaw cycling, wind, and hail. They understand local permit requirements, work with your insurer on hail claims, and install to ESR-1790 specifications so your warranty is enforceable and your roof meets current building code. Choosing a local, experienced installer means faster response, no out-of-state travel fees, and the accountability that comes from being part of your community.
How much upkeep does a metal roof really need compared to asphalt?
Metal requires virtually no maintenance. Asphalt shingles need annual inspection for granule loss, curling, and moss, plus gutter cleaning from shingle debris — continuous low-level cost. Interlock aluminum never rots, splits, curls, or sheds granules. The Alunar coating (warranted 30 years) doesn't degrade; a gentle rinse every few years removes pollen and dust if you wish, but it's optional. Gutters stay cleaner, and the CALGreen-verified low-maintenance profile means fewer service calls and no seasonal surprises. Over Ottawa's typical 78 freeze-thaw days per year, that durability without upkeep compounds into real savings.
