| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
From the start to finish, we loved their work and communication. There were no nails, metal bits, or excessive noise. They listened to all questions and addressed our concerns. They were careful to make no promise of a start date that they could not fulfill. The rain this year made it hard to predict! I would do a commercial for them free to endorse their work and product!
Hi Peter, we wanted to convey to you how much we love our new Interlock roof! Several of our neighbors and friends have said they do, too! We love the look of it, and are so impressed with how beautifully finished it is integrated into the flashing materials. The Interlock scheduling staff was great to work with, and we are so happy with Jessie and his Interlock installation team. They are true craftsmen, and part artists! We loved how they treated our home with respect, and were always willing to address any questions we had. We watched as they worked on items until they had them just right; when we asked about some areas of concern multiple members of the installation team converged on the item and came down to explain and even illustrate with photographs how it was addressed. Again, we couldn't be happier and are enjoying our Interlock roof!
To: Peter Brylinke My Interlock Shake style system was installed in June of 2019. We have now had it for an entire year and experienced the roof through all season, climate and weather conditions. Not only do we value the new look of our roof but the performance of the new roof has been exceptional. In the winter we have seen the snow pile up on it only to slide off as soon as the sun warms it enough. We have noticed a difference in the summers also with a cooler house. The roof has met all of our expectations and we are extremely happy with our decision to install this roof. Last summer when the workers were working on the roof, we were so pleased with the time and effort the workmen put into making sure all aspects of our roof were taken care of. They were courteous, hard working, respectful and considerate of our needs as homeowners. Carlos was instrumental in making sure that we were happy with every aspect of the work that was being done. In closing, we are very impressed with our roof and have recommended this same system to many people we know and many people who just " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">walk by and ask about it. We feel that we have made a great decision in putting this system on our home. ">" alt="Minneapolis MN 55409 Interlock Roof" width="2560" height="1920" />
Dear Peter, Thank you for your help with the installation and warranty transfer of our interlock roof. We have since sold our house and had good feedback about our roof from potential buyers. Neighbors loved our new roof and we had people drive by and actually snap pictures of it! You were right that the new roof would help sell our home! Thanks for all your help!
Dear Peter, I had Interlock Roofing install my black slate roof in the fall one year ago, and I couldn’t be happier! My roof still looks like new, and really stands out in my neighborhood. My old asphalt shingle roof was leaking. I had to shovel it every time it snowed because of " title="ice dams" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">ice dams in my older 1950’s house. I have had no issues at all with my new Interlock roof. It was so nice only to have to shovel my driveway this winter and not worry about snow on the roof. It all just slid off in only a few days after each snowfall. Also, the team that you had out to install my roof was exceptional. I was very impressed with the quality of the team that installed my roof. They were all very polite and worked well together as a team. They worked very hard, and got the job done, and completed in less than three days. I’ve never had to have anyone come back to fix or touch anything up. Thank you for the great job the Interlock team did to replace my roof. I would recommend Interlock to anyone needing a new roof without hesitation!
Dear Peter, We remain delighted with our new Interlock roof. It’s now been through 2 Minnesota winters, a hailstorm, and several rain deluges and is still the top-notch performer that you said it would be. Thank you for your and Interlock’s integrity throughout the sale, installation, and service of our roofing project. We remain convinced that Interlock is indeed “the Midwest’s Best Roof”.
Dear Peter, I Wanted to let you know how pleased I am with my new Interlock roof. It looks terrific, and I am anticipating that I will never have to roof rake my roof again now that your product has been installed. My house is small, a 3-bedroom rambler, but the visual impact the Interlock roof has added makes it look like a castle! All of the contact I have had with your personnel, from yourself to the lead foreman on the job and the men doing the install was pleasant and professional. The cleanup after the job was done was great and it only took 1-1/2 days for a complete tear-off to complete the installation. Please use this letter as a personal recommendation for your company and your product.
Dear Peter, Installing the Interlock roof on our home has completely transformed and improved our home’s appearance. The installation of the roof along with the greatly improved flashings have made a great difference. Because of that, our stucco was able to match our home so we look like new. An improvement I didn’t expect was the change in temperature of our second floor. Usually unbearable " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot on a 90-degree day. It’s now 10-15 degree cooler and livable. We also received a sizeable discount on our homeowners’ insurance because of the roof’s resistance to fire. We’re sure that having to “Never roof again” will help us sell our house should that be necessary. Thank you from two satisfied customers.
My Interlock ">Shake Style Roof in Aged Copper color was installed between December 21st and December 31st. Snow has covered most of the house and garage since it was installed, so I haven’t been able to enjoy the new look yet, but during the installation and before the snow it was obvious it I going to look great. I am glad I had them put Interlock ">Shakes on my 8ft x 16ft hip-roofed storage shed as well. There are a lot of huge oak trees close to my house and they had caused the heavy cedar hand-split shakes to deteriorate from moss growing on them. I knew I needed a roof that would not have this problem in the future. I am a retired mechanical engineer and had built the house and garage myself. I studied the specs on steel, stone coated steel and several aluminum style shakes, before finally settling on the Interlock product. I believe it will prove to be a good choice. I was very impressed with the quality and design of all the types of flashings, ridge vent, and fasteners that were expertly installed. I truly expect this roof to last and look great for generations. I was also very impressed with the crew who did the work under Juan and Carlos’ direction. They worked tirelessly in some difficult weather conditions and short daylight hours. A number of minor changes were made on the fly with gutters, snow guards and roof penetrations and they were all executed precisely. They were very careful in making sure the roofs were protected overnight, on weekends and during the Christmas holiday. They did a great job of cleaning up the difficult mess made removing the decayed shakes. I guess I won’t know for sure if there are any problems until we get some heavy rains in the spring and summer, but as of now, I would be happy to show the roof and talk to any prospective clients that are considering the Interlock product.
I love my new roof. It looks great and I know the house is in better shape without the heavy deteriorating asphalt shingles. My house is the only one on the block with no snow on the roof, and I can't wait to hear it in the rain
We are delighted with the workmanship and quality of our new roof. It has exceeded our expectations, and we highly recommend an Interlock Roof to anyone looking to replace an old roof.
Dear Interlock Roofing, We are writing to share with you our experience with you, your employees, and the new roof. We built a brand new home and moved in January 1997. Within a few years, we were experiencing shingles that were curling and being removed by the wind. By the summer of 2007, it was imperative that we re-roof our home. Fortunately, we saw an ad in the local paper for your product. Below are just a few of the benefits we appreciate with the aluminum interlocking roofing shingles: The service and attention to our roofing project by Scott Bohnen from signing the contract to follow-up after the installation. The fact that the workforce followed safety procedures by wearing safety gear (we have a steep roof). Daily attention to our project until it was completed, about one week in total. Aesthetically pleasing roof, with numerous comments by friends and neighbors and those just passing by. EXCELLENT CURB APPEAL! The roof is quieter during rain storms than with regular asphalt shingles. We often have to verify that it is raining by visually looking or going outside. The roof reflects light so that we have experienced reduced air conditioning costs in the summer. In the winter, the heating bill is reduced as well and that may be in part to the aluminum shingle along with the polypropylene lining between the old and new shingles. No matter the reason, our heating and cooling bills are reduced. The fact that the roof is aluminum and it can be recycled at the end of its life expectancy. The 50-year, one time transferable, warranty. We could go on and on but we are very pleased with our roof and thankful that we will never have to re-roof again. Thank you.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Unity Township
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Unity Township, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Unity Township.
How does a metal roof handle Minnesota's heavy snow and ice buildup?
Metal roofs shed snow more effectively than asphalt because their smooth, hard surface prevents snow from bonding; the aluminum's thermal conductivity also helps prevent ice dams. Unity Township receives about 101 cm of snow annually across roughly 77 freeze-thaw days per year—conditions where ice dam risk is genuine. Interlock's interlocking panels and solid deck installation (which you can place over your existing roof) create a unified thermal layer that minimizes the temperature differential that causes dams. Optional snow guards can be installed if you need to manage avalanche-style shedding near walkways.
Will Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles damage aluminum roofing?
Aluminum is immune to the freeze-thaw damage that weakens asphalt and wood because it doesn't absorb water and has no grain structure to splinter. The material's oxide layer—which forms naturally on aluminum—actually self-heals when scratched, so seasonal expansion and contraction don't compromise it. With roughly 77 freeze-thaw cycles per year in Unity Township and an average winter temperature around 6°C, the continuous wet-dry cycling would eventually degrade asphalt shingles or wood shakes, but aluminum's non-porous nature means it simply cycles unchanged, year after year.
Why won't aluminum metal roofing rust like steel roofs can?
Aluminum cannot rust because rust is oxidized iron, and aluminum contains no iron. Instead, aluminum forms a transparent oxide layer that actually protects the underlying metal and self-heals when scratched. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum (ASTM B209), coated with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides for extra durability. This dual-sided coating is especially important in regions with variable humidity like Chisago County, where seasonal shifts bring both wet springs and dry periods; the protection works year-round without requiring ongoing maintenance or sealant reapplication.
Can metal roofing withstand Minnesota's wind gusts?
Yes. Interlock panels resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, and Unity Township's typical gusts reach about 103 km/h (64 mph)—well within safe margins. The four-way interlocking design of each panel locks to its neighbors on all sides, creating a unified surface that distributes wind load across the entire roof rather than stressing individual fasteners. This is why the warranty covers wind performance: during the high-gust spring and fall seasons, your roof won't lift, flutter, or separate. The system's proven performance on coastal and high-wind sites demonstrates its reliability in turbulent conditions far more severe than the average Chisago County day.
Does my home need structural reinforcement for a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Shake profile weighs about 0.58 lb/sq ft and the Mediterranean Tile profile weighs roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so most existing homes can support a full Interlock installation without any framing upgrades. In fact, you can install Interlock directly over your current asphalt shingles, which often eliminates the cost and landfill burden of a tear-off. This lightweight advantage is especially valuable in Minnesota, where the alternative (installing traditional slate or tile) would require expensive structural modifications before any roofing work could even begin.
What hail protection does metal roofing provide, and will it lower my insurance?
Interlock panels carry UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 performance means the panel resists impact from 2-inch steel balls dropped from 20 feet without cracking or losing impact resistance. Some insurers offer discounts for Class 4-rated roofs because the actual damage rate is measurably lower than with asphalt. Ask your agent whether they recognize this rating; a 5-10% savings over 20 years can offset part of your roofing cost, and that's before accounting for the fact that Interlock simply won't need replacement after a major hail event like an asphalt roof would.
What's the actual lifespan of an Interlock roof, and what does the warranty cover?
The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—meaning if a panel fails, Interlock covers the material at no cost, whenever it fails. It covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. The warranty is also one-time transferable, giving the next owner 50 years of coverage from completion. That transferability significantly boosts resale value because buyers know the roof has documented protection. Combined with aluminum's resistance to freeze-thaw (77 cycles yearly in Chisago County), corrosion, and the 30-year coating warranty against chalking and fading, Interlock roofs often outlast the homes they're installed on—making it genuinely the last roof you'll buy.
How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or wood?
Metal roofs require far less maintenance than asphalt, wood shake, or tile. Asphalt shingles need frequent repairs and eventual replacement; wood shakes split and rot, especially during Minnesota's roughly 77 freeze-thaw days yearly; tile cracks and leaks when settled. Interlock's solid aluminum and interlocking design eliminate the slow degradation that plagues these materials. After installation, you're mainly concerned with clearing debris from gutters—the same task you'd do with any roof. The CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance requirements. Since Interlock panels won't curl, crack, or delaminate as asphalt does during temperature swings, you won't face unexpected mid-winter repair calls or the cumulative cost of patching across 20+ years.
What's the installation timeline, and can you install a metal roof over my existing shingles?
Yes, Interlock installs directly over most existing asphalt roofs—a huge advantage because it eliminates tear-off costs and landfill waste. Installation typically takes 3-5 days for a standard single-story home, depending on roof complexity and crew size. Over-roof installation works because Interlock's lightweight design (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) doesn't overburden the existing deck, and the solid deck creates a continuous thermal layer that improves ice-dam resistance during Minnesota's freeze-thaw seasons. A local Interlock installer serving the region since 2001 can assess your existing roof and walk you through the options. Most homes complete the job in a single season, with no interior disruption, which minimizes the logistical burden compared to traditional roofing replacements.
Is aluminum roofing actually more sustainable than asphalt?
Yes. Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable, and Interlock roofs break the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle—which sends millions of tons of old shingles to waste every year across North America. Because you can install Interlock directly over your existing roof without stripping it, you avoid that tear-off waste entirely. Aluminum recycling also requires far less energy than mining new aluminum, so end-of-life recycling is genuinely worthwhile. Over a 50-year lifespan (the transfer warranty term), you'll replace an asphalt roof 2-3 times, each time sending material to landfill; with Interlock, you install once and recycle once at the very end. For a environmentally conscious homeowner in Chisago County, this is a concrete way to reduce your building footprint.
