Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Harmony, Rhode Island
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |

What our customers are saying:
Critical: Professionalism, Responsiveness My husband and I purchased a home with an existing Interlock roof from his parents this past year. The roof has been fine, we have no issues. However, we are looking to add an addition to our home and because interlock requires their staff to perform all work on the roof because of the " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty we contacted them regarding this. My husband has attempted to reach Interlock for the past 1-2 months with out any call back from anyone. He just keeps getting the front desk secretary that answers the phone and takes the message. He has even requested to speak with the supervisor of the Sharon branch, but again with no call back. I have never experienced such a terrible customer service experience from a company. I do not recommend pursuing a metal roof with Interlock for the fear that if you had a problem with your roof, you may not get in touch with anyone to repair it. If you do proceed with Interlock, prepare yourself to have to call them multiple times per day every day. Update: I received a call back from Interlock today after receiving my google review. Thankfully, they have begun to work on my outstanding issue. Service: Roof installation
Nazar came to look at the concerns I had about my roof. He listened thoughtfully, evaluated the issues explained everything and promptly restored the ridge to my liking. He is the ‘master’ of these roofs!
I first found out about Interlock metal roofs when I visited one of our customer's homes and noticed the gorgeous roof...I asked her who installed it for her and she told me it was a metal roof by Interlock. The roof on my house was in very bad shape and I was shopping for a new roof and I put Interlock at the top of my list. Upon doing some research, I realized that an Interlock roof was going to cost me quite a bit more than a conventional shingled roof and I was bummed that it may be out of my budget, so I got several quotes on conventional shingles before I finally decided to contact Interlock and get an accurate quote. From the first contact with the Interlock sales rep, Jeff Smith, I could tell that Interlock was a company that operated at a far higher level than any other home improvement companies I have come in contact with...Jeff was extremely knowledgeable, personable, and prepared! He conducted himself in a professional manner and took the time to ask lots of questions about my goals for the house and roof, he took accurate measurements so he could provide me with an accurate quote and while he was preparing his quote (on the spot), he had me watch an informational video on his iPad that outlined all of the benefits of an Interlock roof (Lifetime Warranty, hail resistant, wind resistant, Energy efficient, snow slides off, etc., etc.). By the end of the video, I was 100% convinced that the product is amazing and I knew it was the roof I wanted...but, I was still nervous that it would be waaayyy out of my budget. I told Jeff of my concerns and he presented me with the quote....which, as I suspected, was almost 2.5 times more than a conventional shingle roof. Once I got over my initial sticker shock, I thought about all the value that I would be getting...Lifetime Warranty, hail resistant, wind resistant, Energy efficient, snow slides off, etc., etc. and the decision became much easier...then, to make it even easier, Interlock offered me great financing which fit my budget perfectly! How could I say no? The roof was installed about 2 months ago and it looks AWESOME!! I am very happy with the decision to spend the extra money for a high quality product and I've already recommended Interlock to multiple people...including my brother who is an architect for high-end homes and he was so impressed with the quality that he's been recommending Interlock roofs to his clients!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Harmony
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Harmony, Rhode Island. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Harmony.
Will freeze-thaw cycles damage an aluminum metal roof in Rhode Island winters?
Aluminum won't crack, split, or curl from freeze-thaw stress because it's a single non-porous material with no grain or cellular structure that absorbs water and expands. Harmony experiences about 83 freeze-thaw days per year, which would devastate asphalt shingles and wood shakes—both absorb moisture and degrade with repeated temperature swings. The Alunar PVDF coating on both sides of the panel resists moisture penetration, and the aluminum itself contains no iron, so oxidation doesn't weaken the material. After 25+ years of performance in coastal and alpine climates with similar or harsher cycles, Interlock panels remain structurally sound.
How does a metal roof handle heavy snow and ice buildup in Harmony?
Interlock's four-way interlocking panels shed snow and ice naturally because the smooth, hard surface resists ice bonding—snow slides off rather than accumulating in layers. Harmony receives about 76 cm of snow annually, and the lightweight design (Cedar Shingle profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement is required even when snow sits temporarily. The interlocking seams create a unified thermal mass that can help moderate ice dam formation; optional snow guards can be installed at eaves if you want to control slide timing on adjacent structures. Compared to asphalt, which holds moisture and ice, the metal surface naturally encourages drainage.
Does heavy rainfall cause leaks in a metal roof system?
No—the overlapping four-way interlocking panels and properly sealed fasteners are engineered to direct water outward and downward without pooling. Harmony receives approximately 1198 mm of rain annually, and the ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation confirms the system meets IBC/IRC code for weather resistance. Water doesn't penetrate the seams because each panel locks into the next; fasteners are concealed and sealed, not exposed to rain. A quality solid deck and underlayment beneath the panels (standard practice) adds a second line of defense. Aluminum itself cannot rot or absorb moisture, so even if water briefly contacts the material, it causes no deterioration—unlike asphalt or wood.
What's the difference between an aluminum roof and a steel metal roof in a coastal climate?
Aluminum contains no iron and therefore cannot rust, while steel is iron-based and will rust when the protective coating is breached—a critical difference in Newport County's coastal, salt-air environment. Steel roofs are popular in inland, dry areas where corrosion risk is lower; aluminum is the material that coastal builders and marine architects specify. Interlock manufactures aluminum that has been installed on salt-spray homes for 25+ years and even at Antarctica's research stations. The Alunar coating applied to both sides of the panel provides extra corrosion defense in salt air, and if scratched, the aluminum self-heals. Over 80+ years, steel's maintenance and re-coating costs can exceed the price difference at purchase; aluminum's Guardian Warranty covers rust at no cost for the original owner's lifetime.
Can a metal roof withstand Harmony's wind and coastal gust speeds?
Yes—the four-way interlocking panels and the Guardian Warranty guarantee resistance to wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to spec. Harmony's typical daily-maximum winds are about 19 km/h with gusts historically reaching 118 km/h, well within the system's rated capacity. The mechanical interlocking (not adhesive or fastener-dependent alone) allows each panel to support and stabilize its neighbors, distributing wind load across the roof plane rather than concentrating stress on individual fasteners. This design has proven in New England nor'easters and coastal storms for over 25 years. Compare that to asphalt shingles, which rely on adhesive strips and can blow off in sustained gusts above 50 mph.
Does an aluminum metal roof require structural reinforcement, unlike slate or tile?
No structural reinforcement is needed—that's the weight advantage. The Mediterranean Tile profile installs at approximately 0.59 lb/sq ft, about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, so it sits safely on most existing roof framing without additional support. Concrete tile weighs 12–15 lb/sq ft; Interlock's Tile profile is engineered for roughly 1/20th of that load. This means you can re-roof an older home in Harmony without hiring a structural engineer or upgrading roof trusses, saving tens of thousands of dollars. The lightweight design also makes installation faster and safer. You get the authentic appearance of slate, cedar shake, or Mediterranean tile without the engineering costs and structural liability of the real materials.
Will hail damage an aluminum metal roof, and can it lower insurance premiums?
Interlock panels earn UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest hail classification available—and the Guardian Warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. While Harmony's climate data doesn't record frequent severe hail, the Class 4 rating means the material is proven resilient to the impacts that damage or penetrate asphalt shingles and wood shakes. Many homeowners and insurers recognize that a Class 4-rated metal roof is less likely to generate damage claims than traditional roofing. Some insurers offer premium discounts for impact-resistant roofing, particularly for homes in storm-prone regions; contact your carrier to ask whether the UL 2218 Class 4 rating qualifies you. The non-prorated lifetime limited warranty on the original owner adds a layer of financial protection.
Is a metal roof really cheaper than asphalt over the life of the roof?
Yes, when you calculate the full cost over the roof's lifespan, aluminum wins. A typical asphalt roof costs $8,000–12,000 installed and lasts 15–20 years in Harmony's climate (rain, snow, freeze-thaw cycles, and about 3050 sunshine hours annually accelerate degradation). You'll replace it 3–4 times in 60 years; a metal roof is installed once. Interlock's pricing is competitive with premium asphalt; the Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited (non-prorated) for the original owner and one-time transferable for 50 years to the next owner. Add zero re-roofing labor, zero landfill disposal fees, zero maintenance, and the aluminum system becomes your last roof purchase. Over 80 years, the total cost of ownership strongly favors metal. A regional promotion currently offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood shake?
Virtually none—that's the practical advantage. Asphalt shingles require annual inspection for granule loss, algae, and damage; wood shakes need preventive treatment against rot and splitting and must be individually replaced when they fail. Aluminum won't rot, split, or curl, and the Alunar PVDF coating resists mold, algae, and chalking for 30 years (ASTM D4214/D2244). Harmony's 1198 mm annual rainfall naturally rinses the roof; you don't need chemical cleaners or pressure washing. Gutters still need seasonal clearing, but the roof itself requires no touch-ups, re-coating, or repairs beyond the occasional fastener check after a major storm—routine maintenance any roof demands. The ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation lists reduced maintenance as a verified benefit. Over 20+ years, this saves hundreds of hours of homeowner time and contractor visits.
