I wish that the aluminum was a little bit thicker. It would give the appearance that it would hold up longer. I wish that they would call me every 5 years for the next 50 years. I am expecting a call every five years for the next 50 years. Only time will tell how well the product is holding up.

Review: June 7, 2004Completion: June 30, 2004

Now that our new Interlock Roofing system has been installed, we find the look to be extraordinary! It boasts sophistication and looks clean and elegant. This product is impressive not only by its looks but also by its clever and unique interlocking design. Almost more important than the attractive look of our new roof is the peace of mind we have gained with its many features. It’s a relief not to have to be concerned about losing shingles as a result of the high winds we experience regularly in our area. Also, having experienced ice dams this past winter, it is reassuring to know that they cannot occur with the design of this product. We are impressed with its many features. In addition to the two already mentioned, the inability of the shingles to curl, being fireproof, and the reflective properties are features that caught our attention. Knowing the product is guaranteed to last a lifetime and never have to re-roof is an added bonus. The installation of our new roof began four weeks after the materials had been delivered, and then took another four full weeks to complete the actual installation process. Although hampered by a couple of days of strong winds and a couple more of rain, Eric, our installer did an awesome job of handling our installation. He was very professional and personable at all times and was willing to answer and explain our questions. Eric is obviously very skilled at his profession and pays attention to detail, which contributed greatly to the outcome of our new roof. We would recommend this roofing system to anyone wanting to improve the look and value of their home, but would also caution him about the lengthy installation process and the inaccurate scheduling information we received. We believe this to be an outstanding product despite these problems.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Chatham

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Chatham, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Chatham.

Will a metal roof handle Chatham's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or deteriorating?

Yes. Aluminum expands and contracts smoothly without cracking because it has no rigid matrix like asphalt or slate—it simply flexes. Chatham experiences about 70 freeze-thaw days per year, and Interlock's 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) was designed for exactly this. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating, warranted 30 years against fading and chalking, protects through repeated temperature swings. The four-way interlocking system absorbs movement without compromising seals. After 27 years of installations across North America—from coastal salt air to mountain snow zones—Interlock panels have proven freeze-thaw resilient.

Does a metal roof shed snow and ice well in winters with heavy snowfall?

Metal roofs shed snow and ice significantly faster than asphalt shingles because aluminum is smooth, thermally conductive, and nearly frictionless for snow. Chatham receives about 41 cm of snow annually plus 960 mm of rain, so shedding matters. The Slate, Cedar Shingle, and Shake profiles—with their textured appearance—still have a slick aluminum surface underneath; ice and compacted snow slide off readily rather than doming. Snow guards can be installed where roof rake meets pathways. The lightweight construction (Shingle profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means ice and snow loads don't strain your structure, and installation over an existing roof is often possible without reinforcement.

Does Interlock metal roofing rust in a climate with as much rain and snow as Chatham gets?

No. Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, aluminum develops a microscopic oxide layer that protects the metal beneath; if scratched, this layer self-heals automatically. This matters in Chatham's humid climate with 960 mm annual rainfall and 41 cm snow, both of which accelerate corrosion in ferrous metals. Steel roofing rusts; Interlock aluminum does not. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (applied to both sides) adds a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading—two layers of defense. The result: a roof that resists the wet Midwest without maintenance, no touch-ups, no rust stains running down your gutters.

How does a metal roof stand up to high winds and gusts in Cook County?

Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph. Chatham's typical gusts reach about 109 km/h (68 mph), well within spec. The interlocking design means each panel locks to its neighbors on four sides—top, bottom, left, right—so wind cannot lift or separate them. The panels install over solid decking with underlayment, creating a unified system. Installations have survived severe weather across North America without blow-offs when installed to Interlock's specification. For Cook County homeowners near Lake Michigan or in exposed locations, this warranty provides confidence that your roof will not fail during storms.

Will a metal roof reduce hail damage and potentially lower my insurance costs?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, dent and tear easily in hail. Many insurers recognize Class 4 metal roofs as lower-risk and offer premium discounts; you should contact your agent with the UL 2218 rating to inquire. Chatham's 3214 annual sunshine hours and moderate hail frequency mean ice and wind events are your greater concern, but when hail does strike, the aluminum's hardness and the warranty's explicit perforation coverage protect your investment in ways asphalt cannot.

Can my house handle the weight of a metal roof, or will I need expensive structural work?

No structural reinforcement is needed. The Interlock Tile profile is about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, weighing just 0.59 lb/sq ft—so light it installs over most existing roofs without modification. The Shingle profile is even lighter at 0.41 lb/sq ft. Chatham homes built for asphalt (which weighs roughly 2–3 lb/sq ft) can accept Interlock aluminum with headroom to spare. Because installation often occurs directly over existing shingles, tear-off disposal costs and labor drop sharply. This weight advantage is especially valuable in older Cook County homes where roof trusses have modest load capacity. The aluminum's strength comes from its structure and engineering, not mass.

Will switching to metal roofing reduce my cooling costs in summer?

Yes, if you choose an energy-efficient color. Interlock offers Cool Roof Rating Council-rated profiles with thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), meaning these colors reflect the sun's heat rather than absorbing it like asphalt. Chatham receives about 3214 sunshine hours annually, so summer solar gain is real. Dark asphalt roofs absorb that heat; reflective Interlock colors bounce it back. Combined with proper attic ventilation, a reflective metal roof typically reduces peak attic temperatures by 20–30°F compared to asphalt, lowering air-conditioning load. The exact savings depend on your color choice and HVAC efficiency, but energy-conscious homeowners in Cook County often recover the difference over 10–15 years through utility savings.

What warranty comes with Interlock, and how long will the roof actually last?

The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It is fully transferable to the next owner for 50 years from completion. Aluminum does not rot or rust, so this is genuinely protective for the life you'll own the home. Asphalt shingles typically fail within 15–25 years; Interlock installations from 1998 onward are still performing. In Chatham's freeze-thaw (70 days/year) and rain-heavy climate (960 mm/year), durability matters. No other roofing product backs its material for this long. The 50-year transfer term also boosts resale appeal—buyers inherit decades of warranty protection.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or tile?

Interlock metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance. No re-sealing, no shingle replacement, no wood-shake repairs or rot treatment. Asphalt degrades in Chatham's 3214 annual sunshine hours and requires routine inspection and patching. Wood shake splits and curls in the freeze-thaw cycle (70 days per year) and must be individually replaced. Concrete tile cracks in freeze-thaw and is labor-intensive to repair. Aluminum simply sits there, its oxide layer self-healing if scratched, its Alunar coating (30-year warrant) resisting fade and chalk. Occasional gutter cleaning and debris removal are normal for any roof. CALGreen verification confirms Interlock's reduced-maintenance profile. Over 40 years, you save thousands in labor and material versus tile or premium shake.

Can I get a metal roof that doesn't look like metal—that matches my home's traditional style?

Yes. Interlock offers five profiles: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, and Standing Seam. Each replicates the visual character of the traditional material it mimics—Slate has a flat, layered look; Cedar Shingle and Shake have dimensional grain and shadow lines; Tile has curved pan and cover profile; Standing Seam is modern and minimalist. All are aluminum with the same durability and warranty. Chatham's architectural mix includes Victorians, bungalows, and contemporary homes; your style choice doesn't sacrifice performance. From the street, the profiles are visually indistinguishable from their namesakes. You get the appearance you want, the weight and longevity you need, and zero rot, rust, or freeze-thaw failure in Cook County's demanding climate.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Chatham’s climate?

Yes. Chatham averages about 41 cm of snow, 960 mm of rain, roughly 70 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 109 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
