Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Oakland, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
Dear Mark, I would like to provide you some feedback on the first phase of work done on our project at the Church of the Nazarene, in Chicago Heights. Before going into the details of the work perforn1ed, I would like you to know how pleased I was putting together this project with your sale manager, John Mondschean. John’s a pleasure to work with, always prompt, courteous, and clear with feedback and follow-ups. He not only knew his product well but proved to be very helpful in overcoming the various issues of the job. John was able to meet our needs while staying within the budget by offering helpful suggestions and options. I could only hope to have such a knowledgeable, responsible person to work with on future projects. As for the first phase of work, installing a 50-year PVC membrane roof with insulation over the existing roof, integrating metal flashings and adding badly needed ventilation to the top flat area above our sanctuary. This job was performed by a group of tradesmen that took pride in their workmanship; not only did they arrive at the job site on time each workday, they never left without ensuring that the work site was clean and secure daily. For me, that was a big plus. I watched the installation and was pleased with the care utilized by the workmen. Roofing seams were straight, smooth and clean. Details cuts and welded fitting were secured around each of the skylights with care. I was pleased with your workers and their workmanship as witnessed on the job site. Mark, most of all, I’m pleased to inform you that my biggest pet peeve was adhered to without fault, Safety. Your workmen used proper fall protections with tie-offs, body harnesses, and safety lanyards. All ladders and guards were properly secured. At the completion of the job, the work area was thoroughly cleaned, and all scrap materials were removed from the work site. Thank you for a job well done. This job was well-managed and professionally carried out. I look forward to the second phase of our project in the fall.
Looking forward to the next phase of our project.
By letting costumer no ,and awar when job will be done in a timely way I will use your service again
The new roof looks GREAT. Hoping it will stand the test of time. Will recommend to those who inquire. Letting me know that the installation was starting would have been great.
My roof is nice and adds more to my home. They did well and on a good level.
They did a good job, so I can't really think of anything that they could improve on. They provide quality roofing.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Oakland
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Oakland, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Oakland.
Will a metal roof handle Oakland's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or warping?
Yes—aluminum's crystalline structure makes it immune to the damage that plagues brittle materials in freeze-thaw environments. Oakland experiences about 72 freeze-thaw days per year across its typical 12.7°C mean temperature, a rhythm that cracks slate, cedar, and concrete tile. Roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without fracturing, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) remains flexible through those cycles, preventing the chalking and delamination that compromise other coatings after repeated freezing.
Why can't aluminum roofing rust, and does that matter in Cook County?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—only aluminum oxide, a self-healing protective layer that reforms instantly when scratched. Cook County receives about 979 mm of annual rainfall and periodic freeze-thaw wet conditions that accelerate rust in steel-based metals. Steel roofs corrode from the inside out; aluminum remains chemically stable even when wet. The Alunar finish, applied to both sides of every panel, adds another 30-year barrier (ASTM D4214 rated), making corrosion physically impossible and eliminating the stains and structural decay that iron-based alternatives develop within decades.
How does an Interlock metal roof handle Chicago-area snow and ice buildup?
The four-way interlocking panel design sheds snow and ice efficiently because the smooth, sloped aluminum surface and tight seams prevent water pooling and ice dam formation. Oakland averages about 39 cm of snow annually, and the lightweight construction—Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft, Shake at 0.58 lb/sq ft—eliminates the structural risk that heavy snow poses to homes with slate or tile. The warranty covers wind up to 120 mph, exceeding the gusts (to 103 km/h) common in this region, and the interlocking geometry remains sealed even under snow load, keeping water out while allowing natural melt-off.
Can a metal roof reduce hail damage risk and insurance premiums in Illinois?
Interlock metal roofing carries UL 2218 Class 4 impact certification—the highest hail rating available—and the warranty explicitly covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many Illinois insurers recognize this non-prorated material protection and offer premium discounts on homes with Class 4-rated roofs. Given Cook County's typical daily wind gusts around 21 km/h and occasional severe weather, aluminum's dent resistance (without performance loss) and the fact that hail does not compromise the coating's 30-year fade warranty make it a lower-risk investment than asphalt, which requires roof replacement after major hail events.
Is an Interlock metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Metal roofing costs more upfront but eliminates the cycle of replacement every 15-20 years that asphalt demands. The Guardian lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner, transferable for 50 years) means you will never replace this roof; asphalt homeowners in Oakland will reroof twice or three times over the same span. When you factor in tear-off labor, disposal (asphalt shingles end in landfills), and the reality that a metal roof lasts 50+ years while maintaining full impact and wind protection through all 979 mm of annual rainfall and 72 freeze-thaw cycles, the total cost of ownership over decades is substantially lower than repeated asphalt replacements.
How does Interlock handle the wind gusts common near Chicago?
The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h)—far exceeding the typical Cook County gusts that reach 103 km/h and the 21 km/h mean daily winds. The overlap geometry locks panels together in all four directions, so wind cannot lift edges or penetrate seams the way it can with traditional shingles. This engineering, combined with ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790, reissued 2025) compliance for IBC/IRC wind codes, means your roof will not fail during the severe weather events that periodically impact the region.
What maintenance does an Interlock metal roof actually need?
Minimal: an occasional gutter cleaning and a rinse to remove dust accumulation. Unlike asphalt (which loses granules and requires moss treatment), wood shake (which splits and rots), or tile (which cracks and needs mortar repointing), aluminum does not degrade or require sealant renewal. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating resists chalking and fading (ASTM D2244 measured, 30-year warranty), and the non-combustible aluminum itself never splits, curls, or loses structural integrity through the 72 freeze-thaw cycles Oakland experiences annually. CALGreen verification confirms maintenance is genuinely reduced—this is why the roof qualifies for the lifetime limited warranty without condition.
Can Interlock install a new metal roof over my existing shingles?
Yes. Interlock panels are extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile weighs about 96% less than concrete or clay tile—so no structural reinforcement is needed and installation proceeds over most existing roofs. In Oakland's climate, where about 39 cm of snow and 979 mm of rainfall occur annually, this direct-over-existing approach eliminates the labor and landfill cost of a full tear-off, accelerates installation (no roof exposure to weather), and preserves the old deck as additional insulation and sound dampening. Your local Interlock installer, serving the region since 2001, will assess your deck's condition and confirm suitability; in most cases, over-install is faster and more economical.
What architectural styles does Interlock offer for homes in Oakland?
Five profiles: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile—all manufactured from the same roofing-grade aluminum and Alunar coating, all with identical Class A fire and UL 2218 Class 4 hail ratings. Choose Slate or Standing Seam for modern or contemporary homes, Cedar Shingle or Shake for traditional colonials and farmhouses, Mediterranean Tile for Tuscan or Spanish Revival aesthetics. Each profile interlocks in the same four-way geometry, providing 120 mph wind warranty and the same 30-year coating durability through Oakland's about 3166 sunshine hours annually, so style choice reflects preference, not performance or durability differences.
Does an Interlock metal roof reduce cooling costs in a Chicago climate?
energy-efficient colors with thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny) reduce cooling loads by reflecting heat that asphalt absorbs. In Oakland, where mean annual temperature is 12.7°C and sunshine reaches about 3166 hours yearly, light-colored and reflective profiles lower attic temperatures and HVAC runtime, especially during summer. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms measurable energy savings, and the non-prorated lifetime warranty means the coating maintains its reflectance for decades—no degradation that would reduce its cooling benefit over time.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Oakland’s climate?
Yes. Oakland averages about 39 cm of snow, 979 mm of rain, roughly 72 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 103 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
