Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Dundee, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Everything was perfect! The only thing they couldn’t control was the weather! Obviously! But also that was no problem! From start to finish it was a pleasure to work with Interlock Roofing! We will be enjoying our roof for many many more years to come!
They could have only improve on the cleanup. It was a very good experience.
The roof looks absolutely beautiful and we hope it performs well in the snow.
Sales rep John Mondschean is fantastic, a true asset to Interlock, and should be given a raise and a promotion!
I am very happy with the roof and crew. Everyone did a fine job, and the roof looks great! We are very happy with the product we received from Interlock. The roof looks Great!
When the product was supposed to be delivered, we had problems. We had a message from the company saying Monday would be the date. No one appeared. A week later, we were out shopping and they called to tell us they delivered it. The supervisor of the installation waited in the truck for us to get back and open the garage. He had to put it in the garage because the big truck couldn't wait. Overall, we are very satisfied. We had a lot of bushes around the house. I would have thought they would have cleaned a bit better. They cleaned the big things, but they didn't pick up the little things. I'm sure it is hard to do, though.
I told them I was not interested in buying that day. I was just doing my research on what building materials were available so that I would know when I am ready in the future.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Dundee
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Dundee, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Dundee.
Will a metal roof handle Illinois winters with all the freeze-thaw cycling?
Yes—aluminum actually thrives in freeze-thaw conditions because it has no iron and cannot rust. Dundee experiences about 81 freeze-thaw days per year, where moisture enters materials and expands as it freezes. Aluminum's oxide layer doesn't corrode when exposed to water, and the metal itself remains stable through repeated cycles. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy used in Interlock panels is rated for exactly these climates. Asphalt and wood absorb moisture and degrade; aluminum simply sheds it.
How does Interlock handle Dundee's snow load and ice dams?
Dundee averages about 77 centimeters of snow annually, and the four-way interlocking panels lock together so tightly that wind-driven snow cannot work its way up the seams or lift panels during the freeze-thaw shifts that create ice dams. The Shake profile, at just 0.58 lb/sq ft, installs easily over existing roofs with no structural reinforcement—a major advantage when you need a system that won't trap ice or contribute to buildup. Optional snow guards can be added if desired, and the smooth metallic surface sheds meltwater quickly rather than holding it like asphalt does.
Do metal roofs blow off in high winds? What about Dundee's gusts?
No—Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, well above Dundee's typical gust speeds of around 105 km/h (65 mph). The four-way interlocking system means each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides, so wind cannot find an edge to lift or separate. Local gusts occasionally spike higher during storms, but the engineered interlock and the warranty coverage give you documented protection. Installation to spec is the key—your local Interlock installer since 2001 knows exactly how to secure these in Kane County conditions.
Why should I choose aluminum over steel for a roof that lasts decades?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—steel does, and iron oxidizes when exposed to moisture and oxygen, eventually weakening the metal. Dundee receives about 920 millimeters of rain per year, so moisture is constant. When aluminum is scratched, its oxide layer self-heals; the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (applied to both sides) adds a second defense. Even if the coating weathers, the bare aluminum underneath simply won't corrode. Steel requires ongoing maintenance and eventually fails; aluminum is engineered for a different lifetime.
Can my existing roof structure support a metal roof, or do I need reinforcement?
Most homes don't need any structural work. The Mediterranean Tile profile, which looks like heavy clay or concrete tile, weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than the real thing. Compare that to asphalt shingles at around 2.5–3 lb/sq ft: Interlock is often lighter, and it installs directly over your existing roof. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (reissued 2025 for current building codes) documents this, meaning your Dundee home's frame and trusses are already carrying the weight equivalent or less. A local installer can confirm your specific roof, but most homes are cleared immediately.
Does a metal roof help with hail damage claims and insurance rates in Illinois?
Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Severe hail is less frequent in Kane County than in some regions, but the documented non-combustibility (Class A fire rating available) and impact resistance often qualify you for insurance discounts. More importantly, you won't face the repeated claim cycles that asphalt roofs do; one metal roof is genuinely your last one. Contact your insurer for a quote after installation—many offer lower premiums for Class 4 impact-rated roofs, effectively shortening your payback period.
Will a metal roof actually reduce my cooling bills in the warm months?
Yes, especially if you choose an energy-efficient color. Interlock's reflective coatings achieve thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), meaning they bounce back heat that asphalt absorbs and radiates into your attic. Dundee sees about 3,037 hours of sunshine per year—enough to make this difference meaningful, especially in summer peaks. Cool Roof Rating Council verification confirms measurable cooling load reduction. Over a roof's 30–50 year lifespan, the energy savings compound, and the Alunar coating is warranted against fading for 30 years, so reflectance stays consistent.
What does the Interlock lifetime warranty actually cover, and for how long?
The Guardian Warranty is a non-prorated lifetime limited material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—basically all the failure modes that plague asphalt, wood, and traditional tile. It's transferable once, giving the next owner 50 years of warranty protection from completion. That means if you sell your Dundee home in 15 years, the buyer is covered for another 35 years. No other roofing material offers this combination: true lifetime coverage for you, and a half-century safety net for the next household. That's the last roof you're likely to install.
How much maintenance does a metal roof actually need in an Illinois climate?
Metal roofs need far less maintenance than asphalt, wood, or tile. Asphalt shingles require regular inspections, occasional patching, and leaf removal; wood shakes and shingles need treatment against rot and insects; clay or concrete tile requires regrouting and cracked-tile replacement. Interlock aluminum panels don't need any of that. In Dundee's freeze-thaw climate (81 days per year), asphalt becomes brittle and asphalt-coated fasteners fail; aluminum stays flexible and the interlocking system means no exposed fasteners to corrode or loosen. A rinse with a garden hose every couple of years and an annual gutter cleaning—tasks you'd do anyway—keep an Interlock roof looking new for decades. CALGreen verification documents this reduced-maintenance benefit.
Is a metal roof really worth the upfront cost, or should I go with asphalt again?
It depends on how long you plan to stay in your home and what 'worth' means to you. Upfront, asphalt costs less. Over 30 years—a typical asphalt lifespan—you'll replace it at least once, often twice, paying labor and disposal fees every 15–20 years. Interlock installs over your existing roof with no tear-off, and the non-prorated Guardian Warranty covers material for your lifetime plus 50 years for the next owner. No landfill costs, no repeat labor. With Dundee's 77 centimeters of annual snow and 81 freeze-thaw cycles, asphalt brittleness accelerates failure. Metal costs more now but is genuinely your last roof, delivering value through avoided replacements, reduced maintenance, potential insurance discounts, and transferable warranty coverage that adds resale appeal.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Dundee’s climate?
Yes. Dundee averages about 77 cm of snow, 920 mm of rain, roughly 81 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 105 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
