Review: October 9, 2020Completion: June 25, 2020

When the product was supposed to be delivered, we had problems. We had a message from the company saying Monday would be the date. No one appeared. A week later, we were out shopping and they called to tell us they delivered it. The supervisor of the installation waited in the truck for us to get back and open the garage. He had to put it in the garage because the big truck couldn't wait. Overall, we are very satisfied. We had a lot of bushes around the house. I would have thought they would have cleaned a bit better. They cleaned the big things, but they didn't pick up the little things. I'm sure it is hard to do, though.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Gilberts

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Gilberts, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Gilberts.

Will a metal roof handle Gilberts' freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or failing?

Yes—aluminum's crystalline structure and flexibility make it naturally resistant to freeze-thaw damage that destroys brittle materials like asphalt or clay. Gilberts experiences about 81 freeze-thaw days per year, with an average of 77 cm of snow, creating the exact conditions that cause shingles to crack and slate to split. Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) expands and contracts uniformly without permanent stress. The four-way interlocking panel design accommodates thermal movement while keeping panels locked together, preventing the separation that leads to leaks in freeze-prone climates.

How does an Interlock metal roof perform under heavy snow and ice buildup?

Interlock's smooth, sloped panel profiles shed snow and ice efficiently, preventing dangerous accumulation and the ice dams that plague traditional roofs in cold climates. With Gilberts averaging 77 cm of snow annually and sustained wind gusts to 105 km/h, a metal roof's low-friction surface means snow slides off rather than binding. The four-way interlocking seams remain weathertight even when snow sits on the roof, because water trapped beneath melting snow cannot penetrate the overlapped panel joints. You can add discrete snow guards to specific locations if you prefer managed shedding—metal's strength allows this without the reinforcement wood or slate would require.

Can Interlock metal roofing handle Illinois wind and storm gusts?

Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, well beyond Gilberts' typical gusts of 105 km/h (about 65 mph). The four-way interlocking design means each panel is mechanically locked on all four edges to its neighbors, creating a unified system rather than individual shingles that catch wind. This continuous interlocking resists both uplift and lateral stress. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms the system meets IBC and IRC wind-load requirements for Illinois. Even in the strongest seasonal storms your region experiences, the panel network distributes wind load across the entire roof structure rather than concentrating stress at fastener points.

Why is aluminum roofing better than steel for Gilberts' wet climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rusting is an iron-specific chemical reaction that simply cannot occur in aluminum alloy. Instead, aluminum immediately forms an invisible oxide layer when exposed to air, and this layer self-heals when scratched, providing ongoing passive protection. Interlock's roofing-grade aluminum (ASTM B209) is further coated with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. In humid climates with 920 mm of annual rainfall like Gilberts, steel roofing requires regular maintenance and will eventually rust through; Interlock aluminum simply grows more protective with exposure. This dual-layer defense—material plus coating—explains why Interlock panels have been installed from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station since 1998 without rust failures.

How does a metal roof handle heavy rainfall without leaking at the seams?

Interlock's four-way overlapping panel design moves water downslope and away from seams rather than allowing it to pool; each panel overlaps its neighbor on all sides, creating a shingle-like shedding pattern. With Gilberts receiving about 920 mm of rain annually, the critical defense is that water running down one panel flows over the top of the panel below it, never reaching the seam. The interlocking geometry also establishes a slight air gap that aids drainage. When installed to specification over a solid deck and underlayment—standard practice—the system functions like a traditional asphalt roof in terms of water management, but without the deterioration that causes asphalt seams to fail after 15–20 years of freeze-thaw and UV exposure.

Will hail damage an Interlock metal roof, and can it reduce my insurance costs?

Interlock aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 means the roof has been tested against steel balls dropped from heights that simulate severe hail without penetration or significant denting. Many insurers offer discounts on homes with Class 4-rated roofs because the risk of interior water damage and costly claims is far lower than with asphalt shingles or wood. While Gilberts does not experience frequent severe hail, the protection is real and documented. Contact your insurance agent with the ICC-ES ESR-1790 report and UL 2218 Class 4 rating—several major carriers have formal discount programs for metal roofs that meet these standards, potentially offsetting a meaningful portion of installation cost over time.

Do Interlock's reflective coatings actually reduce cooling costs in summer?

Yes, when you choose an energy-efficient color, Interlock panels reflect heat that asphalt absorbs and converts to indoor heat. energy-efficient colors have thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (measured in Aged Copper Penny), meaning they bounce a significant fraction of solar radiation back to the sky rather than warming your roof surface. This matters in Gilberts, which receives about 3,037 sunshine hours annually over a 10.1°C mean temperature—enough direct sun to noticeably reduce attic heat buildup during warm months. The Cool Roof Rating Council ratings confirm the actual cooling benefit. While Gilberts' climate is cool overall, summer cooling savings compound over the 30+ year lifespan, and the reflective finish also means your roof runs cooler, extending the life of the coating (warranted 30 years against fading).

Can my existing roof structure support a metal roof, or will I need reinforcement?

Interlock metal roofing is extraordinarily light—the Shingle profile installs at about 0.41 lb/sq ft, the Shake at 0.58, and the Mediterranean Tile at 0.59 lb/sq ft, making the Tile profile roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This weight advantage means most homes in Gilberts, including those with standard truss or rafter framing, require no structural reinforcement. Interlock can often install directly over an existing asphalt roof without removal, which avoids the labor cost and landfill impact of tear-off. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms the system's structural compliance with IBC and IRC codes for typical residential framing. If your home has unusual framing or a prior structural concern, a local installer will verify compatibility during the site assessment—but for standard Illinois residential construction, the lightweight aluminum profile eliminates the reinforcement expense that slate, concrete tile, or steel would require.

What warranty does Interlock offer, and how does it compare to asphalt shingles?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—the failure modes that end asphalt shingles' service life around year 15–20. For the next owner, the warranty transfers once and remains valid for 50 years from roof completion, adding resale value if you ever sell. Asphalt shingles typically come with 20–25 year prorated coverage that declines each year; after 15 years, claims are often denied. Interlock aluminum and its Alunar 70% PVDF coating are designed for durability across Gilberts' 81 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 77 cm average snow load without the material degradation that asphalt experiences. The non-prorated Guardian Warranty reflects this durability—you are covered for the full material lifespan, not on a declining scale.

How much maintenance does an Interlock metal roof need compared to asphalt or traditional tile?

Interlock aluminum requires virtually no maintenance beyond occasional inspection and clearing debris from gutters—no re-coating, no re-sealing, no moss treatment, no individual shingle replacement. Asphalt shingles need spot repairs by year 10–12, and full replacement by year 15–20; wood shake and shingles require annual treatment against rot and moss; concrete or clay tiles need regrouting and individual tile replacement. Gilberts' climate of 81 freeze-thaw days per year and 920 mm rainfall accelerates asphalt failure through repeated expansion-contraction and water infiltration. Interlock's aluminum core cannot rot or split, and its Alunar 70% PVDF finish is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, eliminating the weathering that forces asphalt re-coating. CALGreen verification documents this reduced-maintenance profile. Over a 40–50 year roof lifespan, eliminating service calls and repairs saves thousands in labor and materials—one of the clearest economic advantages in a long-term cost comparison.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Gilberts’s climate?

Yes. Gilberts averages about 77 cm of snow, 920 mm of rain, roughly 81 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 105 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
