Interlock Metal Roofing - Illinois was very professional and did a great job.

Review: January 19, 2018

Last March I started looking for a roofing company when I found Interlock Roofing. I was curious about what a metal roof would cost and the durability of the materials. To my surprise, although the cost of a metal roof is pricey it is well worth the extra money. I will never have to worry about having to replace a single shingle again! In the last 2 years, I have had a lot of repairs done on my roof using contractors who were not very good as I soon found out. I kept losing shingles with every wind that would pop up due to poor workmanship. Please believe me that a metal roof installed by Interlock is guaranteed to not come apart, fade or discolor or they will fix any issues found for the life of the roof although I do not expect to have to make a call to them if ever. Interlocks workers spent 2.5 days installing my roof working 11 hours per day. They are very dependable and knowledgeable. I would recommend this company 100 percent!

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Washington Township

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Washington Township, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Washington Township.

Will a metal roof hold up through Illinois winters with all the freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum's oxide layer actually strengthens when exposed to repeated freeze-thaw stress, which Washington Township experiences roughly 83 days per year. Unlike asphalt that becomes brittle in cold and cracks, or wood that splits when water enters grain and freezes, roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without material degradation. The Alunar coating (30-year warranty per ASTM D4214) prevents water infiltration at panel seams, so ice formation inside the roof structure never occurs. Your metal roof simply gets tougher each winter cycle.

How does metal roofing handle the snow load in Washington Township?

Washington Township averages about 72 cm of snow annually, but the real advantage isn't capacity—it's weight. The Interlock Tile profile weighs roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft, about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, so snow slides off a metal roof faster than it accumulates, reducing load stress. Your existing roof structure supports the installation without reinforcement. The four-way interlocking panels (ESR-1790 certified) create a unified system that handles drifting and shifting snow without separation. Metal's thermal conductivity also prevents the ice-dam dam cycle that traps melt water on asphalt.

Can aluminum metal roofing rust like steel, and why does that matter?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rust requires iron oxide formation. Instead, aluminum develops a microscopic oxide layer (Al2O3) that is self-healing: if scratched or abraded during installation or weather events, the exposed aluminum instantly re-oxidizes and seals itself. This is why Interlock panels are manufactured with the Alunar fluorocarbon finish applied to both sides; the dual-sided coating (30-year fade/chalk warranty) combined with aluminum's native corrosion resistance means your roof remains structurally sound regardless of Washington Township's 856 mm annual rainfall and varying humidity. Steel roofs require constant vigilance against rust bloom.

Will my metal roof blow off in Illinois wind and thunderstorms?

Washington Township experiences typical gusts around 93 km/h, well within the four-way interlocking panel system's design envelope. Interlock's aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification—nearly 2.5 times your typical gust strength. The interlocking geometry distributes uplift forces across the entire roof plane rather than concentrating stress on fasteners, as occurs with traditional shingles. Each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides, creating a unified diaphragm. Insurance companies recognize this structural advantage; many offer wind-resistance discounts on properties with properly installed metal roofs.

Does hail damage a metal roof, and can I get an insurance discount?

Yes, Interlock aluminum metal roofing carries the highest impact rating available: UL 2218 Class 4, which tests resistance to 50 mm steel balls dropped from 2 m—far exceeding the hailstone sizes typical in Illinois. The warranty specifically covers perforation damage from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Unlike asphalt shingles (which dent and degrade in moderate hail), aluminum panels survive direct strikes without material loss or water infiltration. Many homeowners in hail-prone regions see their insurance premiums drop 10–35% after installing a Class 4 metal roof because claim risk plummets. Request a quote from your insurer before installation; the savings often offset the roof's cost over time.

Will an aluminum metal roof reduce my cooling costs in summer?

energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they bounce sunlight rather than absorbing it like dark asphalt. In Washington Township's ~3153 annual sunshine hours, this reflectance prevents solar heat from entering your attic. Asphalt roofs absorb the same sunlight and transfer it downward, forcing air conditioning to work harder. The Cool Roof Rating Council certification confirms measurable energy reduction. Over a roof's 40–50 year lifespan, the cooling savings compound substantially—more so if you're replacing an aged dark roof. Metal's thermal performance is physics, not marketing.

What's the warranty on an Interlock metal roof, and how long will it actually last?

The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited non-prorated material guarantee for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, and loss of impact resistance—defects that commonly end asphalt and wood roofs within 15–20 years. If you sell, the warranty transfers once, giving the next owner 50 years from completion. Real-world Interlock roofs installed since 1998 (now 25+ years old) show no material degradation; the company has documented installations from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations. Washington Township's moderate climate—with 83 freeze-thaw days and 856 mm rain—poses less stress than either extreme. Plan on 40–50 years of service.

Is metal roofing more expensive than asphalt shingles over the roof's lifetime?

Metal costs 2–3 times more upfront but is the last roof you buy. Asphalt requires full replacement every 15–20 years; a typical home needs 2–3 asphalt roofs over 50 years, plus tear-off labor and landfill fees. Interlock lasts 40–50 years with zero tear-offs, near-zero maintenance, and transferable resale value. Over 50 years, total ownership cost (materials, labor, replacements, disposal) favors metal by 30–50% depending on asphalt lifespan. Add potential insurance discounts (wind, hail, fire), reduced cooling costs (3153 sunshine hours per year in Washington Township), and the fact you never re-roof again—and the math becomes obvious. It's not an expense; it's a permanent asset.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or tile?

Virtually none. Interlock aluminum panels self-clean in rain, require no sealing, and won't split, rot, or curl. The Alunar coating (30-year warranty) doesn't break down or chalk. Asphalt roofs require regular inspection for granule loss, algae, and curling; wood roofs demand moss treatment and replacement of split shakes; clay or concrete tile needs mortar repointing. In Washington Township's 856 mm annual rainfall, water flushes your Interlock roof clean without pooling or staining. The interlocking seams shed debris. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance burden. After 40 years, your only task might be clearing leaves from gutters—the same as any roof.

Can you install a metal roof over my existing asphalt shingles without tearing off?

Yes, in most cases. Interlock's light weight—the Slate profile at ~0.41 lb/sq ft, Shake at ~0.58 lb/sq ft—means installation over an existing roof requires no structural reinforcement and no code variances (ESR-1790 covers this). Tear-off is avoided, saving labor and landfill fees while accelerating your project timeline. Installers apply a solid deck or furring strips over the old roof, then secure panels with a pattern that accounts for thermal movement. The installation process typically takes 3–7 days for a standard home. Interlock Metal Roofing has served this region since 2001 and understands local installation practices. Your local inspector confirms all details before work begins.
