Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
Communication with install crew was difficult. No one spoke fluent English. and when received a call from install supervisor it was difficult to understand him.Other then trying to communicate with the crew, the crew worked late into the evening and did a great job. I understand it not easy to find good workers. The crew was polite and work hard and did great work, but a person who could speak English on the crew would be nice.
This is the roof I’ve been dreaming of since I started to see my old one fail. It looks so sleek and modern and it was a great experience from estimate to installation! N/a Metal roofing is more expensive than asphalt, that’s a known variable. But, I’ll never need to reroof my house again and the last roof only lasted 11-12 years. Jonathan convinced me, vs. another company that uses the same product or similar. It was two long days for the crew who stopped only once for a lunch break each day. The product looks great and offers so much peace of mind for me as a homeowner who has had to deal with ice dams and peeling shingles. I get happy just thinking about what’s now overhead.
Give home owners a better option for small roofs than they did to us. Extremely disappointed. We are considering having this roof removed at this point and replaced with a roof that is not so horrible to look at and does nothing for the RESALE VALUE of our home. We also considered posting pictures of this roof on FACE BOOK on the Interlock website to warn other potential customers to beware of what can happen to them.
After many years of having my roof repaired or replaced, I decided to call Interlock Industries, Inc. since I had miraculously just received an advertisement in my mail. After Paul Forrer came to my house in July and explained the procedure, etc, I was ready to hire the company. In October, the dumpster and shingles arrived. I was excited. Two men came at the end of October and have diligently worked almost everyday for two weeks. They are precise, neat, and knowledgeable. I am impressed with their work. I can not get over the change in the appearance of my house that their work has made. People slow down and gawk, others have stopped as they " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">walk by and have complimented me on it. Thank you for making my home my castle!!!
Expensive but quality was good. My son had the same installation done at his house across the street and they left a mess over there so i say that i got the best crew.
Better communication and respect for my properly. Clean the area and be safe Very disappointed in the staff, problem resolution , schedule time it took 6 months to schedule. Also the manager was rude and not apologetic with problem resolution.
We are happy with the roof, so far.
They were excellent in all ways.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Chestnut Hill
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Chestnut Hill.
Will a metal roof hold up to Massachusetts freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes—aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, so it won't corrode during the roughly 76 freeze-thaw days Chestnut Hill experiences annually. Unlike asphalt shingles that crack and curl under repeated freezing, the Alunar 70% PVDF coating on both sides of every panel (warranted 30 years against fading) stays flexible and won't degrade. Aluminum has no iron, so rust cannot form even when ice and salt contact the roof. The four-way interlocking design keeps moisture out of seams where freeze damage typically starts.
How does a metal roof handle Chestnut Hill's snow and ice buildup?
Chestnut Hill averages about 84 cm of snow yearly. Metal panels shed snow and ice faster than asphalt because they're slicker and conduct less heat into attic spaces—reducing ice-dam formation at eaves. The lightweight design (Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft) means snow load stresses your framing far less than heavy slate or clay tile would. You can add metal snow guards to manage slides in spring thaw. The solid deck underneath, plus proper underlayment, provides the same leak protection as asphalt during heavy melt cycles, with none of the ice-dam rot risk.
Does heavy rain cause leaks in metal roofing?
Chestnut Hill receives about 1,065 mm of rain annually. The four-way interlocking panels and sealed seams are engineered to handle that volume without leaks when installed to spec. The Interlock system's overlap design forces water downward and outward; no fastener penetrations run horizontally across the roof surface where water would pool. A solid deck under the panels plus underlayment provides a second water barrier. Unlike asphalt shingles where water can seep under lifted or curled edges during heavy downpours, the mechanical interlock prevents that failure mode entirely. The system is rated under ICC-ES ESR-1790 for residential water management.
Can a metal roof survive nor'easters and winter wind gusts in Massachusetts?
The warranty covers wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to spec, and Chestnut Hill's typical gusts reach about 130 km/h (81 mph), well within that protection envelope. The four-way interlocking panels lock together mechanically—unlike shingles held by fasteners and sealant alone—so gusts can't catch an edge and peel the roof. Each panel locks to its neighbors horizontally and vertically, distributing wind load across the entire surface. Even occasional strong winter gusts above normal won't compromise the system. The UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating proves the panels' rigidity and attachment strength.
Can my home's structure handle a metal roof without reinforcement?
Yes. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile, the heaviest option at about 0.59 lb/sq ft, is roughly 96% lighter than genuine concrete or clay tile. That means no structural engineer consultation or framing upgrades needed. Even a roof over an existing asphalt layer adds minimal load—many older homes originally built for wood shingles (heavier than aluminum) can accept the system without modification. Your framer can verify in minutes. The lightweight design also reduces long-term deflection and wear on fascia and gutters, which matters after the 76 freeze-thaw cycles per year that stress fastener connections.
Why can't aluminum roofing rust like steel roofing does?
Aluminum contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and becomes rust. Instead, it forms an invisible aluminum oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. When that oxide is scratched, it self-heals automatically. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (applied to both sides) adds another 30-year-warranted barrier against salt-air corrosion and weathering. Steel roofing requires paint maintenance to prevent rust formation, especially in Chestnut Hill's 1,065 mm of annual rain. Aluminum never needs that upkeep. The two-sided coating approach means even the underside stays protected against atmospheric corrosion for decades.
What maintenance does a metal roof need in New England winters?
Minimal. Unlike asphalt shingles that require annual inspection for curling and splits, or wood shakes susceptible to rot and insect damage, Interlock aluminum needs no coating reapplication, no sealant refresh, and no structural repairs from freeze-thaw damage. After 76 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 1,065 mm of rain, the roof stays intact. Occasional gutter cleaning and a rinse to remove salt spray (if near coast) is all homeowners do. No algae, no moss, no wood rot. The CALGreen listing confirms reduced maintenance versus traditional materials. This translates to lower long-term ownership cost and more time enjoying the home instead of ladder work.
What does Interlock's lifetime warranty actually cover and how long is it?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—it covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. That means if a panel fails from a manufacturing defect, Interlock replaces it at no cost, regardless of age. The warranty transfers once to the next owner, giving them 50 years of coverage from completion. No pro-rating: your claim is honored the same way in year 2 as year 30. This stands apart from asphalt shingles (20–25-year warranty, pro-rated after year 5) and wood shakes. For a Chestnut Hill home you plan to own long-term or sell, the transferability boosts buyer confidence and resale appeal.
Will hail damage a metal roof, and can it help my insurance costs?
Interlock holds a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. New England hail is typically smaller. The rigid aluminum panels and four-way interlock system absorb impact energy without denting or cracking the way asphalt shingles do. Some insurers offer discounts on metal roofs rated Class 4, recognizing the lower claims frequency. At minimum, the durability means you won't face costly repairs or premature replacement. Check with your agent about impact-resistance discounts; many carriers now encourage non-combustible, impact-rated materials as they reduce claim costs and liabilities.
Does a metal roof really save on cooling costs, and is it worth it in Massachusetts?
energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect solar heat rather than absorbing it the way dark asphalt does. Emissivity reaches 0.84, and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), both rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. In Chestnut Hill's roughly 3,109 annual sunshine hours, that reflection cuts air-conditioning load on hot summer days. The savings depend on your roof orientation and existing insulation, but every 10–15% reduction in cooling energy is typical. Even accounting for New England's moderate summer temperatures, the lifetime energy benefit combined with zero maintenance and a 50-year transferable warranty makes the upfront cost substantially lower per year of ownership than asphalt replacement cycles.
