Review: October 15, 2023 Completion: June 12, 2023

Interlock metal roofing came within a few weeks after we had agreed to the new roof. They covered all the roofs with plywood. Then a layer of waterproof material. They were very neat picking up after themselves. They used a large magnet to get the nails. The finished job looks wonderful. I also liked that their office was in Walpole just the next town. The only complaint I have is that on the next to last day they worked in between a Thunder storm and pouring rain. I wished they had waited until the roof was dryer to install the metal shingles. Positive: Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, Value

Review: April 13, 2005 Completion: March 29, 2005

We recently purchased a new roof for our 30 year old home. The original roof on our home was in poor shape and as I work with many contractors in town, I realized that a new asphalt roof would not last the 30 years that the original roof did. We were first introduced to Interlock Industries at the home show at Gillette Stadium. From there we were visited at home by a salesman, Michael Yaniv. He explained how the whole process worked and was very helpful in choosing our roof - the one we ended up with was my least favorite but it works wonderfully with our house and we are very pleased with the final look. The workman completed the work in less than a week - and that included working all day Easter Sunday! Their work ethic and consideration of us and our home is to be commended. They were always pleasant, they worked long days and at the end of each day the work site was completely clean. The took care to avoid damaging any of our shrubs and gardens. The finished roof looks gorgeous and we have already had many comments on our "beautiful new roof." I was also surprised at how quiet it is during rainstorms - and it was tested this past weekend! We highly recommend your company and roof to anyone interested. You can call us at (number removed) if you have any questions.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Medfield

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Medfield, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Medfield.

Will a metal roof handle Medfield's snow and ice buildup?

Yes—aluminum's smooth surface and four-way interlocking design shed snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt shingles. Medfield receives about 76 cm of snow annually with roughly 83 freeze-thaw cycles per year, the exact conditions where ice dams form on traditional roofs and cause leaks. Metal's thermal properties and panel interlocks minimize standing water and ice accumulation. Optional snow guards keep snow from cascading suddenly. The material's light weight (Slate profile installs at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement is needed, and it won't sag under seasonal loads the way heavier roofs can.

Does aluminum roofing crack or fail in freeze-thaw climates like ours?

Aluminum is inherently resistant to freeze-thaw damage because it doesn't absorb moisture and has no internal structure that can fracture when water expands. With 83 freeze-thaw cycles typical for Medfield each year, materials like wood, concrete, and even some coatings deteriorate; aluminum's oxide layer self-heals microscopic scratches and maintains integrity across decades. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214/D2244) adds another protective barrier. The Guardian lifetime limited warranty covers cracking, splitting, and curling—conditions rarely seen in properly installed metal roofs in New England climates.

Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel metal roofing?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rust is iron oxide, which only forms on ferrous metals. Interlock panels use roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), which form a thin, self-healing oxide layer when exposed to air. If scratched during installation or weather, that oxide regenerates automatically. Steel roofing requires paint or coating to prevent rust; once the coating fails (especially in salt air or acidic rain), rust accelerates. Medfield's 1,198 mm of annual rainfall and coastal influences make this distinction real: aluminum's passive corrosion resistance means no touch-ups, no rust stains, no structural weakening over 50+ years.

Is a metal roof really worth the cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Metal roofing costs 2–3 times more upfront than asphalt shingles, but the Guardian warranty—lifetime limited, non-prorated for the original owner—makes it the final roof you'll install. Asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years and demands replacement, removal, and landfill fees every cycle. Metal roofs have survived 25+ years in service since 1998 manufacturing began, with no degradation in impact resistance or coating integrity. Over a 50-year homeownership period, asphalt requires 2–3 tearoffs; metal requires none. Add the 30-year coating warranty, zero maintenance, potential insurance discounts for Class 4 hail rating (UL 2218), and transferable value to the next owner (50 years from completion), and metal's lifecycle cost favors the homeowner. Current financing: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation.

Does Medfield get enough hail for metal roofing to matter?

Hail is unpredictable, but metal roofing's UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—protects you when it does occur. The warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers offer premium discounts (5–15% typical) for Class 4 roofing because claims are so rare. Medfield's climate data shows gusts up to 118 km/h, the kind of severe weather systems that sometimes bring hail. While not guaranteed annually, a single hail event can total an asphalt roof (requiring full replacement) and total a weaker metal roof; Class 4 aluminum walks away unmarked. Over decades, that one storm could save you a $15,000–$25,000 replacement. The impact resistance never diminishes—the warranty confirms it.

Can my house's roof structure handle metal roofing, or do I need to reinforce it?

Most homes need no structural reinforcement. The Slate profile weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft; even the heavier Mediterranean Tile (0.59 lb/sq ft) is about 96% lighter than real tile, so it installs safely over most existing roofs. Medfield homes built in the last 60–80 years are designed for asphalt shingles (1–2 lb/sq ft), and metal roofing easily fits within those live-load margins. ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 (reissued 2025 for IBC/IRC) confirms code compliance across standard framing. A structural engineer can verify your specific home in minutes if you're concerned, but the overwhelming majority of installations proceed without reinforcement. This light weight is one reason metal roofs install over existing asphalt in one day—no tearoff, no disposal, no weeks of work.

Will my metal roof hold up in Medfield storms?

Yes. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Medfield's typical daily-max winds average 19 km/h with gusts recorded to 118 km/h—well below the roof's rating. The interlocking design means each panel is mechanically locked to its neighbors on all four sides, distributing wind loads across the entire roof rather than concentrating stress on fasteners. This differs fundamentally from shingles, which are nailed at discrete points and lift from the bottom when wind gets underneath. Proper installation by Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc., serving since 1999, ensures fasteners and underlayment are rated to match the panel's engineering. You'll sleep through nor'easters without worry.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need?

Virtually none. Unlike asphalt shingles (which need moss/algae treatment, missing shingle replacement, and gutter clearing every spring), wood shakes (which split and cup, requiring individual replacement), or tile (which cracks and needs reseating), metal roofing is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance. The smooth aluminum surface and four-way interlocking panels shed debris, leaves, and water quickly—no standing moisture means no mold or algae growth. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (30-year warranty) resists fading and chalking even under Medfield's 3,050 annual sunshine hours and 1,198 mm of rain. Most homeowners visually inspect their roof annually and call it done. Gutters still need seasonal clearing, but the roof itself requires no sealant reapplication, panel replacement, or protective treatments. That's genuine peace of mind.

Can a metal roof actually cool my home and lower energy bills?

Yes, when you choose energy-efficient colors. These profiles have thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (such as Aged Copper Penny), meaning they reflect rather than absorb the heat that dark asphalt shingles capture and transfer into attics. Cool Roof Rating Council certification confirms the performance. In Medfield's 3,050 annual sunshine hours, that reflection effect reduces attic temperature and cooling load, especially on south- and west-facing slopes. The savings are modest in northern climates compared to the South, but every degree matters in July and August. Combined with the roof's longevity—meaning no repeated heat-damage-accelerated aging like asphalt endures—metal roofing maintains its reflective properties for decades. It's one of several reasons why lifecycle energy use favors metal over asphalt in renovation scenarios.

How long does it take to install a metal roof, and can you install over my old asphalt roof?

Installation typically takes 1–3 days depending on roof size and pitch, far faster than asphalt tearoff and replacement. Because metal panels weigh so little—the Slate profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft—most homes can install directly over existing asphalt without structural reinforcement. No tearoff means no disposal costs, no waste, and minimal disruption to your home. The installer secures panels to the existing roof deck with fasteners rated to ICC-ES ESR-1790 standards, lays underlayment to prevent leaks, and seals penetrations. This method also adds an insulating air gap that improves thermal performance. Not every existing roof qualifies (heavily deteriorated decks may need repair first), but in Medfield's typical residential stock, over-roof installation is the standard approach.
