Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Thompson Riverview Terrace, Minnesota
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |

What our customers are saying:
They could have improved on the clean up. Winter can be tough, but they could do a more thorough clean up. Peter said that after the roof project, I would have a chance to write a thank you letter, and we would receive a $500 bonus. I have not received that yet.
I am, very much so, and I have been doing that. That's a 4-plus! They have been phenomenal! I would hire them personally to do any work on my buildings anytime! I'm very, very pleased! We're in a very exclusive neighborhood and I get compliments from neighbors continually about their work. I tell them when I can to contact Interlock because their work is tremendous and I couldn't be happier with the product, service, or work - especially with the crew who installed the roof.
Hopefully, Interlock decides to honor what their employees told us e.g. this roof is not what we bought! Anything short of that will require additional legal action on our part which we are fully willing to proceed with.
They could have improved on communication.
I an looking forward to getting it done once we figure out the financing.
I think care and consideration should be looked at and explained to the customer when the Interlock system is installed when the weather is below freezing. This may affect how brittle the siding becomes in such conditions and any kind of work pertaining to the juncture of the siding and the roof is subject to damage.
Awesome company! The roof is better than the first roof they replaced!
I was very much interested in the steel roof, but when it's doubled in price and has the ice issue, it's a no-brainer.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Thompson Riverview Terrace
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Thompson Riverview Terrace, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Thompson Riverview Terrace.
How does a metal roof handle Thompson Riverview Terrace's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface prevents buildup and reduces ice dam formation. Thompson Riverview Terrace receives about 95 cm of snow annually with roughly 79 freeze-thaw days per year—conditions that crack and curl traditional shingles. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock tight, and the lightweight design (Shake at 0.58 lb/sq ft) means no structural stress even when wet snow clings briefly. The panels' aluminum alloy won't degrade from repeated freezing, so your roof handles the cycle year after year without weakening.
Why choose aluminum roofing instead of steel in a Minnesota climate?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—steel rusts, corrodes, and fails in freeze-thaw climates within 15–20 years. Aluminum instead forms a self-healing oxide layer that protects the metal underneath; even if scratched, that layer reforms. Interlock panels use roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum with a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, warranted 30 years against fading. Over 79 freeze-thaw cycles per year, this two-sided coating system keeps moisture out while the aluminum core stays structurally sound for decades.
Will a metal roof blow off in Minnesota wind gusts?
No. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to withstand wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Thompson Riverview Terrace experiences typical gusts around 94 km/h, well below that threshold. The interlocking design—each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides—distributes wind load across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. This engineering, combined with proper installation and the panels' light weight, means your roof stays secure through the seasonal wind events this region sees.
Is a metal roof more expensive than asphalt over the long term?
Over 50+ years, Interlock metal roofing costs less than replacing asphalt three times. Asphalt shingles last 15–20 years in Thompson Riverview Terrace's 79 annual freeze-thaw days and 796 mm of rain; you'll tear off and haul to landfill three roofing jobs. Interlock is installed once, requires minimal maintenance, and comes with a lifetime limited material warranty for the original owner and a 50-year transferable term for the next. That single installation avoids three disposal fees, three re-roofing labor costs, and three roof-off-and-on disruptions—making it genuinely the last roof you buy.
What maintenance does an aluminum metal roof actually need?
Interlock aluminum roofs need virtually none. Unlike asphalt shingles, which curl and crack during Thompson Riverview Terrace's 79 annual freeze-thaw cycles, or wood shakes, which split and rot in 796 mm of yearly rainfall, aluminum won't degrade or require sealing. Unlike tile, it won't crack from impact. Rinse leaves and debris after fall—that's it. The two-sided Alunar PVDF coating (30-year warranty against chalking) resists weathering, and the aluminum core is immune to rot, rust, and pest damage. A roof that stands for 50 years without repair costs far less than one requiring shingle replacement, wood resealing, or tile patching.
Can Interlock metal roofing be installed over my existing asphalt roof?
Yes, in most cases. Interlock's light weight—Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft, for example—means installation over existing asphalt requires no structural reinforcement on typical homes. A solid deck and underlayment eliminate the hollow-drum noise some fear from metal roofs; sound insulation matches asphalt-quiet performance. Existing roof removal saves labor cost and landfill waste. Your local installer, serving Thompson Riverview Terrace since 2001, evaluates your deck during a free assessment and advises whether overlay or removal makes sense. Most overlap installations finish in a few days with minimal disruption.
Does aluminum roofing help lower cooling costs in summer?
Yes. energy-efficient Interlock colors have thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55, meaning they reflect heat that dark asphalt absorbs. This matters in Thompson Riverview Terrace's 3,128 annual sunshine hours—excess attic heat forces air conditioning to work harder. Cool Roof Rating Council certified, the reflective finish keeps your roof cooler, reducing thermal transfer into living spaces. Lighter-colored profiles like Aged Copper Penny lower surface temperature during the warm season, easing cooling load. You won't see dramatic energy savings every month, but the compounded effect over 50 years—lower peak-summer AC demand—adds tangible value.
How does Interlock aluminum roofing perform in hail, and can it lower insurance costs?
Interlock carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This durability sometimes qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts. In Thompson Riverview Terrace's variable weather, hail risk is moderate; a roof that shrugs off large impacts gives insurers confidence. Aluminum's non-denting performance differs from asphalt, which dents and loses granules, or traditional tile, which cracks. Contact your insurer about discounts for impact-rated metal roofing; combined with reduced maintenance claims over the roof's life, the insurance savings often offset part of the installation cost.
Is a metal roof safer from fire than asphalt shingles?
Aluminum is non-combustible and Class A fire-rated (highest available), whereas asphalt shingles are combustible and contribute to fire spread. Interlock metal roofing meets ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (IBC/IRC, reissued 2025) and achieves Class A when installed to specification. In Thompson Riverview Terrace, where heavy snow and 796 mm of annual rain make wildfire risk lower than dry regions, the fire benefit is a secondary safeguard. However, for insurance purposes and home safety, a non-combustible roof eliminates one fire pathway—a meaningful peace-of-mind advantage, especially given the 50-year lifespan means your home is protected for generations.
Is aluminum roofing more environmentally responsible than asphalt?
Yes. Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable; at end of life, panels return to the scrap aluminum stream for reuse. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, are torn off every 15–20 years in Thompson Riverview Terrace's freeze-thaw climate and landfilled—three complete disposal cycles over the same 50-year span. Each tear-off generates waste, requires haul-away fuel, and ties up landfill space. Aluminum breaks the cycle: one installation, one lifetime, then full recycling. The material requires no stripping or replacement. Interlock's aluminum is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance and waste, making it an honest choice for homeowners concerned about their environmental footprint over time.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Thompson Riverview Terrace’s climate?
Yes. Thompson Riverview Terrace averages about 95 cm of snow, 796 mm of rain, roughly 79 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 94 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
