Review: October 9, 2019 Completion: September 1, 2019

It can be hard to get a hold of people when you call in. I don't think I have called and not had to leave a voicemail. Calls went unreturned for over 24hrs.

Review: July 24, 2017 Completion: January 30, 2017

The project was done months ago and they still haven't closed the permit on it. The city has been bothering me about the permit. I tried calling Interlock Roofing about it multiple times and they said they would resolve it, gave me dates they would have it resolved by, missed the dates they set themselves, and as far as I know the permit is still open. I like the product, I think they are good roofs, but I wont be getting any more of them or reccomending them to friends because of the hassles with the permit.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Columbia Heights

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Columbia Heights, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Columbia Heights.

How does a metal roof handle Columbia Heights' heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum's smooth, interlocking surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt shingles, reducing the risk of ice dams during the area's ~81 annual freeze-thaw days. The four-way interlocking panels create a tight seal that prevents water infiltration when snow melts and refreezes. Columbia Heights receives about 94 cm of snow yearly, and the Interlock panels' light weight—roughly 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Slate profile—won't strain your structure even under heavy snow load. Unlike wood or concrete tile, aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or splitting, maintaining its integrity through Minnesota's repeated temperature swings.

Why choose aluminum roofing instead of steel in a climate with rain and snow?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that corrodes in wet conditions. Instead, aluminum develops a natural oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, protecting the metal underneath indefinitely. Columbia Heights averages 843 mm of annual rainfall plus snowmelt, conditions that would cause steel to deteriorate over time. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is applied to both sides of every panel, adding 30 years of warranted protection against chalking and fading. This dual-coat system is especially critical in regions with moisture cycling, ensuring your roof remains structurally sound and visually intact for decades.

Can a metal roof withstand Columbia Heights' wind gusts?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), far exceeding the typical gusts your area experiences. Columbia Heights records mean daily-max winds around 18 km/h with occasional gusts to 95 km/h—well within the roof's tested capacity. The interlocking design means each panel is mechanically secured to its neighbors, distributing uplift forces across the entire roof rather than concentrating stress on fasteners. This engineering, validated in ICC-ES report ESR-1790, ensures your roof stays in place during storms while remaining fully transferable to the next owner.

How does aluminum roofing perform through repeated freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum expands and contracts uniformly with temperature changes, resisting the cracking and splitting that plague wood shingles and concrete tile through freeze-thaw stress. Columbia Heights endures about 81 freeze-thaw days annually—a significant mechanical challenge for brittle materials. The 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloys used in Interlock panels maintain their structural integrity across this repeated cycling without fatigue failure. Unlike asphalt, which becomes brittle in cold and soft in sun, aluminum's consistent elasticity keeps the roof sealed and stable. The Guardian Warranty explicitly covers cracking and splitting, reflecting confidence in the material's durability under these specific Minnesota conditions.

What's the hail rating, and could it lower my homeowners insurance?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4, the highest hail-impact rating available, with warranty coverage for perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This performance may qualify you for insurance discounts; contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 specification. Columbia Heights' climate includes occasional severe weather, and Class 4 protection means your roof will survive impacts that would puncture or dent other materials. The aluminum's inherent strength and the four-way interlocking design distribute impact force across the panel surface. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer reduced premiums—check your policy to see if metal roofing qualifications apply.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof installation?

No. Interlock metal roofing is extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at only 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it approximately 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This weight advantage means the roof can be installed directly over most existing asphalt shingles without structural modification. Columbia Heights homes built to code for standard shingle loads will support metal roofing with no reinforcement required. The lightweight aluminum also reduces stress on your entire home's frame, lowering long-term structural fatigue. This is a practical advantage: you avoid costly engineering assessments and foundation work, while gaining a 50-year transferable warranty on the same structure.

Will a metal roof reduce my cooling costs in summer?

energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect significant solar heat before it enters your home, reducing air-conditioning demand on hot days. The Aged Copper Penny finish, for example, achieves initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84—meaning it bounces heat away rather than absorbing it like dark asphalt. Columbia Heights records about 3110 hours of sunshine annually, making reflective roofing a measurable efficiency gain. Cool Roof Rating Council certification confirms this performance independently. While Minnesota summers are mild compared to southern climates, even a 5–10% reduction in cooling energy compounds across decades of ownership, improving your return on the roof investment.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt shingles?

Metal roofing requires far less maintenance than asphalt, wood, or tile. You won't replace missing shingles, clear moss or algae growth, or repair rot—aluminum won't decay, and the Alunar finish resists weathering for 30 years. Columbia Heights' 843 mm annual rainfall could accelerate asphalt deterioration and wood rot; aluminum remains inert. Routine inspection (every 2–3 years) and gutter cleaning suffice. The CALGreen-verified design confirms reduced maintenance demands. Over a 50-year lifespan, this translates to thousands of dollars saved on repairs and replacement materials, making the higher upfront cost economically sound compared to asphalt tear-offs every 15–20 years.

What does the warranty actually cover, and is it transferable?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's one-time transferable, giving the next owner 50 years of protection from completion. This structure reflects aluminum's genuine durability through Columbia Heights' freeze-thaw cycling, rainfall, and wind. Non-prorated means you're covered equally in year 1 and year 50; there's no declining benefit schedule. The 50-year transfer term substantially enhances resale value and signals long-term confidence in the product. Few roofing materials offer such terms—it's a concrete financial and legal protection backed by performance data since 1998.

Is metal roofing actually more sustainable than asphalt shingles?

Yes. Interlock panels are approximately 95% recyclable aluminum; at end of life, the entire roof enters the recycling stream rather than landfills. Asphalt shingles—removed during typical 15–20 year replacement cycles—generate millions of tons of landfill waste annually. Columbia Heights receives 843 mm of rain and 94 cm of snow yearly, accelerating asphalt degradation and replacement frequency in wet climates. Installing a 50-year metal roof once, instead of replacing asphalt three times, eliminates that waste cycle entirely. The recycled aluminum market is mature and valuable, so your old roof becomes feedstock for new products. This is environmental responsibility grounded in material science, not marketing.
