Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Canaan, Vermont
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Long wait on materials, installation was good, but not what I would call great (some dents, some uneven areas). The overall project had the potential to be fantastic (due to the construction of the house) and it fell short of that, but still looks great. Also dissappointed that they could not provide me with a certification letter for the wind, hail, and fire resistance. So installation had no effect on my homeowners insurance. At my previous home in Texas, that was standard for all roofing contractors. See previous comments
This is the second review I have ever given. Absolutely couldn’t be happier about our new roof/skylights and the folks I dealt with during the whole process. Begins with the no pressure sales, support staff and ends with the people who did the work. Work was done in November and waited to give this review only because I wanted to see how it handled a Vermont winter and see if any issues came up. No issues, none! Not sure why, but I used a lot less oil this winter (colder and snowier winter than normal). Maybe my 30 years old skylights or something to do with the roof system? If you are on the fence about using Interlock Roofing or the Shake Shingle type of roof, my advice to you would be to get off the fence and pull the trigger!
Communications with the office could be improved. Dropping and losing nails and scraps in the snow is understandable but not picking up excess nails dropped while filling nail pouches is not okay. Also as a non smoker cigarette butts on the ground are definitely not okay.
We just put an Interlock metal roof on our house. We were very happy with Chris's presentation and and decided to move forward with them. They started when they said they would and the crew worked full days until it was complete. The install manager Paul stopped by multiple times and the crew chief, Nazar was very diligent. We look forward to many years ahead of trouble free living through Vermonts wind, rain, and snow. Thank you Chris, and the office staff.
Very pleased with the quality and appearance of the roofing. None No
Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value We were looking to replace our shingle roof with a standing seam metal roof for our home in Vermont. We called over ten roofing contractors and received quotes from four of them. I had the best feeling about Interlock Roofing from the beginning, mostly due to my interactions with Mark. Additionally, they were the most competitive on price. Once we committed and signed a contract, we dealt with Jennifer and Paul to coordinate and complete the installation. They were incredibly responsive, and timely, and the entire project was completed in four days. Such a pleasure to work with. The entire process was seamless, and the roof looks phenomenal. Very pleased overall. Service: Roof installation
Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness, Value Professional, pleasant & responsive staff (Jonathan & Jennifer). The roof is beautiful to look at & highly functional. There was a delay in installation because of VT weather, but that was unavoidable. Jonathan reached out to us after two years to check on us & the roof, which we thought was very considerate & just good business practice. We are very happy with the roof & would recommend Interlock to any of our friends. Service: Roof installation
I have two concerns/complaints about my new Interlock roof. A few places along the ridge cap appear raised - instead of being completely straight and level horizontally, there are a few places where two shingles meet in a slightly raised, A-shape. Also there are several places on the porch roof and on the roof between the garage and main house where the shingles are depressed - flattened or "crushed concavely". My guess is it's from being knelt on by the installers and I don't like how it looks. I was told the roof would be installed in October. It wasn't started until November and it wasn't finished until a week before Christmas. The installers endured terribly cold and wet weather and I'm concerned it affected the quality of the installation.
Scheduling vs. actual appearance of crew (as above) could have been communicated more clearly. It seems the project was pushed into late December causing my concern as to low temperature (zero \*F) affecting product and installation. So far though, the workmanship and function appears to be at 100%. A few major wind storms since completion had no ill effect, and the intense rain storms have resulted in no penetration into the home. (I could not say that prior to installation!)

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Canaan
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Canaan, Vermont. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Canaan.
How does a metal roof handle Canaan's heavy snow load and ice dams?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice more effectively than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface provides less friction for buildup; with about 216 cm of snow annually in Canaan, this matters. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to 120 mph wind resistance, so the combined weight and force of snow and ice won't compromise the seal. Aluminum's thermal conductivity also helps prevent ice dams by allowing heat from your home to radiate upward more efficiently than asphalt does. Snow guards are available to control avalanching if you prefer slower release.
Will a metal roof survive Essex County's freeze-thaw cycles?
Freeze-thaw damage typically cracks stone, rotts wood, and breaks asphalt shingles—but not aluminum. Canaan experiences about 86 freeze-thaw days per year, and aluminum's crystalline structure simply expands and contracts without cracking, splitting, or losing its integrity. The Guardian warranty explicitly covers cracking and splitting for the original owner's lifetime, and the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading) maintains flexibility through temperature swings, so the aluminum oxide layer never becomes brittle.
Why doesn't an aluminum metal roof rust like steel does?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—only the element aluminum itself plus trace amounts of manganese and magnesium in roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 alloy (ASTM B209). When exposed to air and moisture (Canaan receives about 877 mm of rain annually), aluminum instantly forms a microscopically thin, self-healing oxide layer that protects the metal beneath. If the surface is scratched by ice, snow, or installation, the oxide layer repairs itself within hours. Steel roofs, by contrast, rust from the inside out; aluminum never will, which is why it's chosen for coastal salt-air homes and Antarctic research stations.
Can Interlock metal roofing withstand Canaan's winter wind gusts?
Yes. Canaan's typical wind gusts reach about 120 km/h, and Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The interlocking design means each panel is mechanically locked to its neighbors on all four sides, distributing wind force across the entire roof system rather than allowing individual panels to lift. This is verified by ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 (IBC/IRC, reissued 2025), the code document that confirms the installation meets or exceeds regional building standards for wind resistance.
Does metal roofing help with homeowner's insurance in Vermont?
Interlock's UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating—the highest available—demonstrates that the aluminum panels withstand impact from hailstones up to 1.5 inches, and the warranty even covers perforation from hail of that size. Because Class 4 impact resistance is rare and expensive to achieve, many insurers offer discounts or reduced premiums when you install it. Check with your agent, but several Vermont homeowners have reported meaningful savings simply by providing proof of the UL rating and ICC-ES certification. The combination of non-combustible aluminum and proven impact resistance can lower both your risk profile and your annual costs.
Can my roof structure support a metal roof, or will I need reinforcement?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, and the Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft—approximately 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Most homes built in Canaan since the 1970s are easily strong enough for this minimal load; in fact, the roof structure typically carries asphalt shingles (12-15 lb/sq ft) more easily than it carries snow loads (Canaan averages 216 cm annually). Interlock installs directly over most existing roofs without decking upgrades, saving you thousands in labor and material costs while giving you a permanent, non-combustible layer underneath.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Metal roofing costs more initially but is the last roof you'll buy; asphalt requires replacement every 15-25 years. Over 50 years (a conservative lifespan for Interlock), you'll replace asphalt three times while maintaining one metal roof. The Guardian warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, transferable for 50 years from completion, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—losses that asphalt simply cannot prevent in Canaan's 86 annual freeze-thaw days and 216 cm of snow. Currently, Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, making this the right time to calculate your true cost over decades, not seasons.
How much maintenance does a metal roof require in a snowy climate?
Virtually none. Unlike wood shake or cedar shingles (which split and rot in freeze-thaw cycles), Interlock requires no staining, sealing, or annual inspection. Unlike clay or concrete tile (prone to cracking under ice load), aluminum simply flexes and sheds. Unlike asphalt (which chalks and loses granules in UV and weather), Interlock's Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is warranted 30 years against fading and chalking (measured by ASTM D4214 and D2244). With 2705 annual sunshine hours and about 877 mm of rain in Canaan, this durability rating is verified under real-world conditions. A simple rinse every few years removes debris; that's it.
Is metal roofing fire-safe if my home is near forested areas?
Interlock aluminum is non-combustible and available in a Class A fire rating, the highest classification. This means it will not catch fire, will not spread fire, and will not contribute fuel to a wildfire—essential assurance if you live in or near wooded areas of Essex County. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms compliance with IBC/IRC fire safety codes, and the non-combustible aluminum alloy (3105-H24 / 3003-H24, ASTM B209) is intrinsically fire-resistant regardless of age or weathering. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, are combustible and can be ignited by embers; wood shakes are highly flammable. A Class A metal roof gives you genuine peace of mind in fire-prone regions.
Is metal roofing more environmentally responsible than asphalt?
Yes. Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable and ends the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle that happens every 15-25 years. When an asphalt roof fails, the entire roof is stripped and dumped; when an Interlock roof reaches the end of its lifespan (decades longer), the aluminum is melted and reused indefinitely with no loss of quality. Canaan receives about 877 mm of rain annually, so every asphalt roof installed eventually becomes hazardous waste. Interlock is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, which also means fewer chemical treatments and fewer site visits over the roof's life. Choosing aluminum is choosing a material that never depletes and never pollutes a landfill.
