Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Hallowell

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Hallowell, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Hallowell.

How does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow loads?

Metal roofs shed snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface prevents moisture from clinging and building up over freeze-thaw cycles. Hallowell averages about 154 cm of snow annually across roughly 90 freeze-thaw days—conditions where asphalt roofs develop ice dams and lose granules. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels resist wind gusts up to 120 mph and lock snow loads securely without sagging or deflecting. The panels' light weight (the Shingle profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement is needed, and snow simply slides off rather than accumulating into dangerous weight. Optional snow guards can be added if you want to control runoff direction.

Will freeze-thaw cycling in Hallowell damage an aluminum metal roof?

No—freeze-thaw cycles cannot damage aluminum because the metal has no water absorption and its oxide layer does not crack under thermal stress like wood shingles or concrete tile do. Hallowell's approximately 90 freeze-thaw days per year would gradually split asphalt, warp wood, and craze tile, but aluminum simply contracts and expands without degradation. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating—warranted 30 years against chalking and fading—is applied to both sides of every panel, so the underside stays protected even in wet conditions. This double-sided finish was specifically added for coastal and high-moisture regions where salt spray and repeated moisture exposure would compromise single-coated roofing.

Can an aluminum roof rust in Maine's wet climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes into rust. Instead, aluminum forms a self-healing oxide layer that seals the metal beneath, and if scratched, the layer reforms automatically over time. This makes aluminum roofing ideal for Hallowell's 948 mm of annual rainfall and salt-air exposure. The 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 roofing-grade aluminum alloys used in Interlock panels (ASTM B209) are the same specifications used in coastal homes and an Antarctic research station, so the material is proven in extreme moisture and salt environments. The 30-year Alunar coating adds a protective barrier, but the base metal itself is simply incapable of rusting.

Will heavy rainfall cause leaks in a metal roof installed over my existing shingles?

No—Interlock's four-way interlocking panels shed water faster than asphalt shingles can absorb it, and the mechanical lock between panels (not nails or sealant) means water cannot work its way through seams. Hallowell receives about 948 mm of rain per year; a properly installed metal roof over your existing deck uses the old roof as a continuous substrate, with premium underlayment bridging the gap between the old surface and the new panels. The interlocking system creates a water-tight seal through geometry, not adhesive, so there's no sealant to degrade in freeze-thaw cycles. Installation over existing roof is approved per ICC-ES ESR-1790 (reissued 2025) and eliminates the debris and cost of a complete tear-off.

How well does metal roofing resist Maine wind gusts?

Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification—well above Hallowell's typical gust speeds of about 117 km/h (73 mph). The panels' four-way interlocking design locks each piece to its neighbors on all four sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than concentrating stress at fasteners. This mechanical interlock is what allows the panels to achieve UL 2218 Class 4 hail impact rating (the highest available) and maintain structural integrity in the severe coastal and inland storms that can hit Maine. The warranty covers wind resistance without exception, and no retrofitting or reinforcement is needed—the panels install directly over your existing roof.

Does Interlock's hail rating reduce homeowner insurance premiums?

Interlock's UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest hail classification available—often qualifies homeowners for insurance premium discounts because the roof resists damage that typically triggers claims. The panels withstand hailstones up to 1.5 inches in diameter without perforation, and the Guardian Warranty explicitly covers hail impact loss of that severity. Whether your insurer offers a discount depends on their specific underwriting rules, but the Class 4 rating and the transferable 50-year warranty term (one lifetime limited transfer to the next owner) typically appeal to insurers assessing long-term roof durability. Contact your agent with the ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation report and Intertek listing 33876 documentation to discuss eligible discounts.

Do energy-efficiency metal roof colors actually save money on cooling in Maine?

Yes, but the savings scale with the season—energy-efficient Interlock colors are Cool Roof Rating Council rated with thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and initial solar reflectance as high as 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), meaning they reflect heat that asphalt roofs absorb and re-radiate into the home. In Hallowell, with about 3015 sunshine hours annually, those reflection gains reduce cooling costs during warmer months. The benefit is modest in Maine's cool climate compared to hot regions, but metal roofing's light weight and non-absorbent surface also prevent thermal bridging and moisture accumulation that drives up HVAC load. Combined with the 30-year coating warranty that maintains reflectivity, an energy-efficiency color is a practical choice for long-term efficiency without active maintenance.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need compared to asphalt shingles?

An Interlock metal roof requires virtually zero maintenance beyond occasional gutter cleaning—no patching, no recoating, no granule replacement. Asphalt shingles degrade visibly every winter in Hallowell's freeze-thaw environment (roughly 90 cycles per year), requiring spot repairs within 10-15 years and complete replacement by year 20-25. Metal roofing's non-porous aluminum surface and self-healing oxide layer eliminate rot, splitting, and curling, and the 30-year Alunar PVDF coating doesn't chalk or fade in the region's 3015 hours of annual sun. The Guardian Warranty covers cracking, splitting, and loss of impact resistance with no pro-rated deductible, so your cost of ownership after installation is genuine zero. CALGreen verification confirms this reduced-maintenance benefit.

Can I install a metal roof that looks like slate or tile without reinforcing my house frame?

Yes—Interlock's Shake and Tile profiles install at roughly 0.58 to 0.59 lb/sq ft, making them about 96% lighter than real concrete or clay tile while delivering the same architectural look. This extraordinary lightness means no structural engineer consultation, no beam reinforcement, and no additional framing cost—a major advantage if your home's structure was built for asphalt shingles (typically 2-3 lb/sq ft). The panels install directly over most existing roofs, and because aluminum is non-absorbent, moisture doesn't accumulate on the underside, so ventilation requirements are identical to your current setup. You get the authentic visual appeal of traditional high-end materials without the downside cost and structural burden.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Hallowell, and what's the current promotion?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. serves Hallowell and the surrounding region—the same installer has been serving New England since 1999, so you're working with local expertise in Maine's climate and code requirements. Current promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or a flat 10% discount off installation cost if you prefer to pay upfront. The manufacturer itself was founded in 1998 in Delta, BC, and has installed roofing from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station, so the product is proven in extreme climates worldwide. Your local installer knows the panels, holds current training, and backs the Guardian Warranty's lifetime limited coverage for the original owner plus the one-time 50-year transferable term for the next owner.
