Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in North Winthrop

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in North Winthrop, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in North Winthrop.

How does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow and ice?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels shed snow and prevent ice dams because the smooth aluminum surface doesn't trap moisture the way asphalt does. North Winthrop averages about 154 cm of snow annually, and the lightweight design—the Slate profile weighs only 0.41 lb/sq ft—eliminates the structural risk of snow load that slate or concrete tile creates. Optional snow guards can be installed to control slide-off timing. The aluminum's thermal properties and slick profile work together to minimize the freeze-thaw cycle damage that causes typical shingle deterioration in your area's roughly 90 freeze-thaw days per year.

Will freeze-thaw cycles in Maine damage aluminum metal roofing?

No. Aluminum expands and contracts minimally compared to asphalt or wood shakes, and it has no porous structure that traps moisture and cracks when water freezes. The self-healing oxide layer on 3105-H24 aluminum alloy means minor scratches don't expose bare metal to oxidation damage. North Winthrop's approximately 90 annual freeze-thaw days would crack wood shakes and degrade asphalt adhesive, but aluminum simply cycles without structural fatigue. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating—warranted 30 years against chalking and fading—further protects against the UV and weather stress compounded by your area's about 3015 annual sunshine hours.

Can aluminum metal roofing rust in Maine's wet climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; what forms instead is a transparent oxide layer that actually protects the base metal and self-heals when scratched. This matters in Maine's wet climate—North Winthrop receives about 948 mm of rain annually—because steel roofing would require constant repainting to prevent rust stains and eventual perforation. Interlock's 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 roofing-grade aluminum alloys are engineered for durability, and the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is applied to both sides of every panel for extra corrosion resistance in salt-air and high-moisture zones. The Guardian lifetime limited warranty explicitly covers rust—a guarantee steel cannot match.

Are metal roof panels secure in Maine's coastal wind gusts?

Yes. Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, and North Winthrop's typical wind gusts reach about 117 km/h (73 mph)—well within that protection. The four-way interlocking design locks each panel to its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof system rather than relying on fasteners alone. ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 confirms this design meets IBC and IRC wind standards. Regional gusts can exceed the 17 km/h daily average, especially during nor'easters, but the mechanical interlock and fastening pattern are proven to handle Maine's wind profile without uplift or panel separation.

Does Interlock metal roofing qualify for hail damage insurance coverage?

Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize this highest impact classification and offer premium discounts because the roof is less likely to require a claim. Contact your insurer with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and ESR-1790 code evaluation to explore your specific policy terms. North Winthrop's climate includes thunderstorms and hail risk, and the Class 4 rating means impact damage that would compromise asphalt shingles or wooden shakes will not compromise Interlock's integrity or warranty coverage.

What warranty does Interlock offer, and how long will the roof actually last?

The Guardian is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rust, rot, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's transferable once—the next owner receives 50 years of warranty from completion. No other roofing material offers non-prorated coverage for life. The aluminum substrate and 30-year Alunar fluorocarbon finish (warranted against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214 and D2244) are engineered to outlast asphalt by decades. In practice, panels installed since 1998 at coastal and Antarctic sites remain in service, proving the design's durability across extreme climates far harsher than North Winthrop's 154 cm annual snow and 948 mm rain.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Metal roofing costs more initially but is the last roof you buy—asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years, while Interlock's lifetime limited warranty and proven track record since 1998 mean 50+ years of no replacement, no tear-off disposal, and no labor reroof cycles. Over a 50-year period, asphalt means three to four complete replacements; Interlock means one installation. Maintenance is minimal—no algae growth, no moss, no debris accumulation in the way wood shakes trap in Maine's wet climate. Current promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation. The math strongly favors metal when you calculate landfill costs, labor inflation, and storm damage risk across decades.

How light is aluminum roofing, and does my house need structural work?

Interlock's Slate profile installs at 0.41 lb/sq ft; the Tile at 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Most homes require no structural reinforcement because the load is comparable to asphalt and far below what a standard roof frame can support. This matters in North Winthrop because the lightweight design performs beautifully under 154 cm of snow and 90 freeze-thaw cycles per year without structural fatigue or settling. Installation often goes directly over existing roofs, eliminating costly tear-off labor. An inspection by your installer or structural engineer will confirm your specific situation, but the vast majority of Maine homes can support Interlock without modification.

Is metal roofing better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Yes. Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, whereas asphalt shingles are torn off, trucked to landfill, and permanently disposed of. A 50-year Interlock roof eliminates three to four asphalt tear-off cycles and their associated landfill waste and transportation emissions. The aluminum substrate is manufactured from recycled content and can be recycled again indefinitely without degradation. CALGreen verification and published solar-reflectance listing further reduce your home's operational environmental impact. In North Winthrop's climate of 948 mm rain and 3015 sunshine hours annually, the durable, maintenance-free aluminum also eliminates the need for periodic chemical treatments (moss killers, algaecides) that asphalt and wood shakes often require.
