Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Farmingdale

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Farmingdale, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Farmingdale.

Does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow and ice buildup?

Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking panels and smooth aluminum surface shed snow and ice far more reliably than asphalt. Farmingdale receives about 130 cm of snow annually across roughly 86 freeze-thaw cycles per year, a pattern that accelerates asphalt deterioration and ice-dam formation. Aluminum's low friction coefficient prevents snow from bonding; optional snow guards keep slides controlled. The lightweight design (Shingle profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no roof-load anxiety even when wet snow accumulates, and the material's non-porous nature won't trap meltwater that causes rot and leaks in wood or asphalt substrates.

How does aluminum hold up to Maine's freeze-thaw stress?

Aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw cycles because it doesn't absorb moisture and has no internal structure to crack when water expands. Farmingdale experiences roughly 86 freeze-thaw days per year—a harsh cycle that splits asphalt, causes granule loss, and warps wood shingles. Interlock panels are manufactured from roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy to ASTM B209, engineered to expand and contract uniformly without delamination or fatigue. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating on both sides resists the oxide spalling that plagued early aluminum roofs. After 25+ years of regional installations, freeze-thaw failure is virtually unreported.

Can a metal roof rust in Maine's wet climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes into rust. What happens instead is a thin, invisible oxide layer forms on the surface; when scratched, this layer self-heals within weeks. Farmingdale's 1022 mm of annual rainfall and coastal proximity to salt air make corrosion resistance critical. Steel roofing requires expensive paint or coatings to prevent rust; aluminum needs none. Interlock's roofing-grade 3003-H24 and 3105-H24 alloys have been installed from salt-spray coastlines to Antarctica since 1998, with no rust perforation claims under the Guardian warranty. For Maine's damp environment, aluminum's intrinsic protection beats any coating applied to steel.

Will a metal roof stay put in Maine windstorms?

Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification—well above Farmingdale's typical gust speeds (about 129 km/h, or roughly 80 mph). The four-way mechanical interlock between panels prevents uplift; each panel bridges and grips its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof system rather than concentrating it on fasteners. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 validates this mechanical performance under IBC/IRC wind load requirements. Even in the rare gust event, the interlocking geometry and fastening pattern ensure panels stay seated. This solid performance record across 25+ years of New England installations makes structural wind failure extremely uncommon.

Does Interlock Metal Roofing's Slate or Shingle hold up in hail?

Both profiles are rated UL 2218 Class 4—the highest impact classification available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Aluminum's ductility (ability to deform without cracking) absorbs hail impact far better than brittle slate, asphalt, or ceramic tile. Class 4 rating means the roof survives repeated severe hail events that would compromise asphalt or wood. Some insurers offer premium discounts for Class 4-rated roofs, making the system's durability a financial advantage. Given Farmingdale's 3085 annual sunshine hours, hail events are infrequent, but when they occur, Interlock's proven impact resistance prevents the leak-causing fractures common in traditional materials.

Does a metal roof reduce energy costs in Maine?

energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect solar heat rather than absorb it, lowering cooling costs and roof surface temperature. Aged Copper Penny, for example, achieves initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, measured to Cool Roof Rating Council standards. In a Maine climate averaging 8.6°C year-round with 3085 sunshine hours annually, the energy benefit is modest during winter (when heat reflection is wasteful) but meaningful on warm months and in attics prone to overheating. Metal's thermal performance outpaces asphalt, which absorbs and re-radiates heat into the home. Over a 50-year roof life, the cooling savings add up—particularly as summer highs trend warmer.

Is a metal roof light enough to install over my existing asphalt shingles?

Yes—Interlock's lightweight aluminum is about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, meaning no structural reinforcement is needed. The Slate profile installs at roughly 0.41 lb per square foot; the Mediterranean Tile profile at 0.59 lb per square foot. In contrast, traditional tile weighs 10–15 pounds per square foot, requiring roof framing upgrades costing thousands. Interlock typically installs over existing asphalt without structural work, saving time and money. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms the system's suitability over existing roofs. This advantage is especially valuable in older Farmingdale homes where original framing wasn't designed for heavy tile or slate, allowing you to achieve that aesthetic without renovation costs.

How much maintenance does an Interlock metal roof need?

Interlock requires far less maintenance than asphalt, wood, or tile. Asphalt needs annual cleaning, sealing, and repair of failed shingles and flashing. Wood demands staining, mold treatment, and regular splitting repair. Tile requires mortar repointing and broken-piece replacement. Aluminum panels, by contrast, shed debris naturally and resist algae, mold, and pest damage. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214/D2244, meaning no re-coating. In Farmingdale's 1022 mm annual rainfall and humid climate, the non-porous surface prevents moisture trapping. Most owners' maintenance is visual inspection every 3–5 years. This low-touch durability directly cuts the lifetime cost against asphalt's recurring repairs.

Is aluminum roofing better for the environment than asphalt?

Interlock panels are approximately 95% recyclable at end of life; aluminum scrap streams are mature and valuable, making recycling economically worthwhile. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, end up in landfills by the millions of tons annually—the tear-off alone creates weeks of debris and disposal fees. Over Farmingdale's 50-year roof lifespan, one Interlock installation replaces 2–3 asphalt systems and their landfill impact. The lightweight design also reduces transportation emissions. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable without property loss, so an old Interlock roof becomes new aerospace, automotive, or roofing stock. For homeowners concerned with waste reduction, choosing aluminum is a direct vote against the asphalt tear-off cycle that burdened your property and landfills for a century.

How does a metal roof's cost compare to asphalt over its lifetime?

Interlock costs more upfront but becomes cheaper over time. An asphalt roof costs less to install but requires replacement every 15–20 years; Farmingdale's 86 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 130 cm snow load accelerate that decline. Over 50 years, you'll buy and install asphalt 2–3 times, plus repairs, debris removal, and disposal fees. Interlock installs once—the Guardian warranty is lifetime limited for the original owner, non-prorated. Current regional financing (no payments, no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation) further narrows the cost gap. Material costs are offset by zero re-coating, minimal repairs, no tear-offs, and avoided structural reinforcement. The real return emerges in year 20, when asphalt fails and Interlock remains pristine.
