Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Winthrop

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Winthrop, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Winthrop.

How does a metal roof handle Winthrop's 154 cm of annual snowfall?

Aluminum's smooth, slippery surface naturally sheds snow and ice rather than trapping moisture like asphalt does. Winthrop averages about 90 freeze-thaw cycles per year—a primary cause of ice dam formation and shingle damage—but metal roofing's non-porous construction and 120 mph wind warranty mean snow slides cleanly without pooling water. Optional snow guards preserve architectural detail while controlling slide. The four-way interlocking panel system (ESR-1790 rated) distributes loads evenly, so heavy snow stress is minimized.

Why does freeze-thaw cycling in Maine damage asphalt but not Interlock metal?

Asphalt absorbs water into its porous structure, which expands when frozen and contracts when thawed, causing granule loss and cracking over time. Aluminum is non-porous and cannot absorb moisture. At about 90 freeze-thaw days annually in Winthrop, this cycling is relentless, yet Interlock's 3105-H24 aluminum alloy and Alunar 70% PVDF coating (both sides, 30-year durability warranty) remain unaffected by temperature swings between freezing and the region's typical 8.1°C mean. The oxide layer self-heals minor scratches, so the material grows stronger with age.

Will a metal roof rust in Maine's wet climate with 950 mm annual rainfall?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes in steel or copper-bearing roofing. Instead, aluminum naturally forms an invisible oxide layer that protects the underlying metal and self-heals when scratched. In coastal or salt-air environments, this is critical; Interlock applies its Alunar fluorocarbon finish to both sides of every panel for extra defense. With Winthrop receiving nearly 950 mm of rain annually and gusts to 117 km/h, that two-sided barrier is insurance against the moisture and wind-driven spray that corrode traditional materials.

Does Interlock's hail rating affect homeowner's insurance in Maine?

Interlock aluminum roofing is UL 2218 Class 4 rated—the highest impact classification available—and the Guardian Warranty specifically covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize Class 4 impact resistance and offer premium discounts for homeowners in hail-prone regions or with older roofs that have deductibles tied to impact damage. While Winthrop's climate emphasizes freeze-thaw and snow over hail, having Class 4 certification on record strengthens any insurance claim and may reduce future rates. Contact your carrier with the ESR-1790 documentation to confirm eligibility.

Can heavy Maine rain find its way through the seams of a metal roof?

No. Interlock's four-way interlocking panel design (ESR-1790 rated) creates a mechanical seal that overlaps at every joint, directing water downslope and away from seams rather than allowing pooling or penetration. With Winthrop averaging 948 mm of rain per year and gusts to 117 km/h that drive moisture at angles, the lapping geometry is critical. Water cannot reverse-flow up the slopes of the overlap, and the solid aluminum substrate (unlike asphalt, which can absorb water) gives rain nowhere to hide. When installed over solid decking with proper underlayment, seams remain bone-dry even under continuous downpour.

Can my old house roof support a metal roof, or do I need reinforcement?

Most Winthrop homes do not need structural reinforcement because Interlock's Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Even the heavier Shake profile is just 0.58 lb/sq ft. Many existing roofs can support aluminum metal roofing over the current shingles, eliminating costly tearoff and landfill disposal. A qualified local installer (Interlock Metal Roofing serves the region since 1999) will assess your framing during the site visit and confirm whether your structure meets load capacity. Lightweight installation also means faster job completion and lower labor costs.

Will a metal roof hold up to Maine's winter winds and nor'easters?

Yes. Interlock roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, which exceeds Winthrop's recorded gusts of about 117 km/h (roughly 73 mph). The four-way interlocking aluminum panels mechanically lock together, distributing lateral forces across the entire roof plane rather than allowing individual shingle lift. This locking system is evaluated under ICC-ES ESR-1790 (updated 2025 for current building codes) and resists both steady winds and sudden gusts. Snow and ice weight add additional mass, further anchoring the roof to the structure during winter storms.

What's the real lifespan of Interlock metal roofing, and what does the warranty cover?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited material warranty (non-prorated for the original owner), covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—the dominant failure modes of conventional roofing. It transfers once to the next owner, who receives 50 years of coverage from completion. Aluminum does not rot or split, and the 30-year Alunar coating warranty (ASTM D4214/D2244 measured) protects finish integrity. Installations from 1998 onward at coastal and Antarctic sites remain leak-free, suggesting functional lifespans exceeding 50 years with minimal intervention.

How often do you have to clean or maintain an Interlock metal roof in Maine?

Maintenance is minimal. Unlike asphalt shingles (which require gutter cleaning, moss treatment, and granule replacement) or wood cedar (which requires staining every 5–10 years), Interlock aluminum needs only occasional debris removal and gutter maintenance—the same as any roof. The non-porous Alunar fluorocarbon finish resists algae and moss growth even in Winthrop's 3015 annual sunshine hours and damp climate. No paint, sealant, or re-coating is needed. CALGreen verification confirms Interlock qualifies as reduced-maintenance roofing, translating to lower long-term ownership costs and fewer service calls over the roof's 50+ year life.

Can a metal roof in Maine reduce cooling costs in summer?

Yes, if you choose an energy-efficient color. Interlock's reflective finishes (thermal emissivity 0.84, initial solar reflectance up to 0.55) are Cool Roof Rating Council certified and reflect the summer heat that asphalt absorbs and stores. Although Winthrop's mean annual temperature of 8.1°C is cool, summer peaks can exceed 25°C, and reflective metal roofing reduces attic temperatures, lowering air-conditioning runtime and extending equipment life. The reflective finish also benefits winter: reduced thermal cycling stress lowers freeze-thaw damage risk. energy-efficiency colors carry no cost premium and are available across all five profiles (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, Mediterranean Tile).
