Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in West Gardiner

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in West Gardiner, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in West Gardiner.

How does a metal roof handle West Gardiner's 130 cm of annual snow?

Metal roofs shed snow effectively because aluminum's smooth surface and thermal properties prevent ice dams that trap water on asphalt. West Gardiner receives about 130 cm of snow yearly with roughly 86 freeze-thaw cycles, which crack and curl traditional shingles. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels remain rigid through these cycles—the panels won't split or cup. Adding snow guards if you want to retain snow for insulation is straightforward, but the roof itself won't deteriorate from the weight: the Slate profile weighs only 0.41 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than concrete tile, so no structural reinforcement is ever needed.

Why do freeze-thaw cycles in Maine matter for roofing material choice?

Freeze-thaw damage occurs when water enters material, freezes, expands, and cracks it repeatedly—West Gardiner experiences about 86 of these cycles annually. Asphalt shingles absorb moisture, crack under expansion stress, and lose integrity in 15–20 years. Aluminum cannot absorb water; Interlock's 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 alloy is non-porous and its oxide layer self-heals when scratched, eliminating the freeze-thaw failure mode entirely. Combined with our 30-year Alunar® coating warranty (ASTM D4214 tested) and the lifetime limited material warranty covering cracking and curling, your roof simply doesn't age out from seasonal stress like regional competitors do.

With over 1000 mm of annual rain in West Gardiner, how leak-proof is a metal roof?

Four-way interlocking panels overlap so water runs down and out; no fastener heads protrude into the weather. West Gardiner averages about 1022 mm of rainfall annually—heavy enough that traditional fastener-exposed roofing fails at penetration points. Interlock's design eliminates that failure path: water cascades over each interlocking seam without pooling or finding entry. Installation over solid decking with underlayment (which you can reuse from your existing roof) creates the same noise-dampening and leak-prevention system as asphalt, but without the material degradation. The result is a weather-tight roof that doesn't develop the pinhole leaks asphalt develops after 20 years of seasonal wet-freeze cycling.

Does an aluminum metal roof stay secure in Maine's wind gusts?

Yes—Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. West Gardiner's typical gusts reach about 129 km/h, well within that margin. The four-way interlocking system mechanically locks each panel to its neighbors, preventing uplift even in the extreme gust events your region occasionally experiences. No exposed fasteners means no fastener-pull failure—the failure mode that compromises most single-fastener systems. Insurance companies recognize this durability advantage, and the interlocking design has proven itself from coastal salt-air homes to the Antarctic research stations where Interlock has been installed since 1998.

What hail damage protection does metal roofing provide?

Interlock's aluminum panels carry UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. In Maine, damaging hail is infrequent but costly when it arrives; insurance claims for asphalt and composition shingles often exceed repair value because those materials fail permanently under impact. Aluminum's non-combustible nature and impact resistance often qualify you for insurance discounts. Unlike slate or tile (which shatter), aluminum dents cosmetically but maintains structural integrity. The combination of impact durability and lightweight engineering (no reinforcement needed) means your existing framing handles the installation with zero additional cost.

Why doesn't aluminum roofing rust like steel in Maine's wet climate?

Aluminum contains no iron—iron is what rusts. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), which develops an invisible oxide layer that protects the base metal. When that layer is scratched (by installation, foot traffic, or debris), it self-heals in the presence of oxygen and moisture—exactly the conditions West Gardiner provides year-round with 130 cm of snow, 1022 mm of rain, and about 86 freeze-thaw days annually. Steel roofing requires constant coating reapplication to prevent rust; aluminum's self-healing oxide eliminates that maintenance burden. Our Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (applied to both sides) adds 30-year protection against chalking and fading, but the base metal's corrosion resistance is permanent and passive.

Can a metal roof reduce cooling costs in a Maine climate?

Yes, if you select an energy-efficient color. Interlock's reflective coatings reach initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (like Aged Copper Penny) and thermal emissivity of 0.84, rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. While West Gardiner's 3085 annual sunshine hours are modest compared to southern regions, every percentage point of reflected heat reduces your air-conditioning load during summer. Metal roofs also cool faster than asphalt after sunset, reducing peak cooling demand. Over a roof's 40+ year lifespan, that efficiency compounds—especially if you install the roof over an existing deck (which you can do with metal's light weight) and keep your original insulation intact. The energy advantage is real but works alongside Maine's primary roofing challenge: winter durability.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost over the life of the roof?

Over 40–50 years, metal typically costs less per year than asphalt despite higher initial price. You buy asphalt shingles 2–3 times in that span (replacement every 15–25 years); Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner, transferable for 50 years to the next owner) ends the replacement cycle. Labor for tear-off and disposal adds $1.50–$3.00 per sq ft each cycle. Interlock installs over most existing roofs, eliminating one or more tear-offs. Current regional promotion includes no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation. Your last-roof economics improve further because you avoid the compounding cost of three-generation shingle replacement and the hidden costs of weather damage asphalt develops after 20 years of West Gardiner's 86 annual freeze-thaw cycles.

What maintenance does an aluminum metal roof really need?

Interlock requires no more maintenance than asphalt: occasional gutter cleaning and inspection. You won't refinish, re-coat, or repair splits like wood shake requires; you won't unclog/replace flashing like tile needs; you won't power-wash algae growth like asphalt develops. West Gardiner's roughly 130 cm of annual snow doesn't require removal—the lightweight design (0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft) carries it safely, and the smooth surface sheds it naturally each thaw. Aluminum's oxide layer never needs resealing or staining. The 30-year Alunar® coating warranty (ASTM D4214 / D2244 tested) means no fading concerns through West Gardiner's seasonal sunshine-to-snow cycles. The result: one roof purchase, zero material-specific upkeep, and no surprises.

What does Interlock's warranty actually cover over 50 years?

The Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited for the original owner, covering material defects including rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—the exact failure modes Maine's 86 annual freeze-thaw cycles trigger in asphalt and wood. The warranty transfers once to the next owner, extending to 50 years from completion. Unlike prorated warranties that decline yearly, this non-prorated coverage means full protection regardless of age. The Alunar® coating is separately warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214 tested), protecting your color investment. Because aluminum cannot rot, split from moisture, or rust, the warranty isn't theoretical—it reflects the material's actual behavior. Combined with the ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790, reissued 2025), you're protected by both product performance and building-code compliance.
