Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Randolph

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Randolph, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Randolph.

How does a metal roof handle Maine's snow load and ice dams?

Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow reliably without ice dam buildup because the smooth metal surface and tight seams don't trap moisture the way asphalt does. Randolph receives about 130 cm of snow yearly across roughly 86 freeze-thaw cycles, which is where aluminum excels—the oxide coating doesn't degrade from repeated thawing, and the panels remain dimensionally stable. You can add snow guards if you want to retain snow for insulation or prevent it sliding off onto walkways. The lightweight design (Shingle profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means your home bears a fraction of what slate or tile would impose during a wet, heavy snow event.

Will freeze-thaw cycles crack or degrade an aluminum metal roof?

No—aluminum is inherently immune to the freeze-thaw damage that ruins asphalt and wood. Water expands when it freezes, which splits asphalt shingles and causes wood shake to crack and curl over time. Aluminum doesn't absorb water, so ice forming on it causes no material stress. Randolph's 86 annual freeze-thaw days are actually a showcase for aluminum's advantage: the 3105-H24 alloy maintains its structural integrity through unlimited thermal cycling. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214) protects against UV damage during those long stretches of 3085 annual sunshine hours, keeping the finish intact season after season.

Can aluminum roofing rust in Maine's rainy climate?

Steel roofs rust because steel contains iron, which oxidizes when exposed to air and moisture. Aluminum contains zero iron and cannot rust—instead, it forms a microscopic oxide layer that self-heals when scratched. This is why Interlock has installed roofs from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station since 1998. In Randolph's 1022 mm of annual rainfall, that non-corrosive property is your insurance against deterioration. The two-sided Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating adds extra durability in wet climates, but even without it, the aluminum substrate itself is chemically stable. You're buying a material that ages gracefully, not one that requires protective coatings just to prevent rust.

Are metal roof panels strong enough to stay put in Maine wind gusts?

Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking system is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification. Randolph's typical wind gusts reach about 129 km/h (80 mph), well within that safety margin. The interlocking design distributes uplift forces across multiple panel edges so no single fastener bears all the load; even during severe weather, the seams lock the roof down as one unified assembly. The ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790, reissued 2025) confirms compliance with IBC/IRC wind requirements. In 25 years of operation, metal roofing has proven itself in coastal storms and mountain valleys—the engineering is straightforward and proven.

What happens if hail hits my metal roof, and will insurance cover damage?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This durability often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because claims are extremely rare. Aluminum's dent resistance is superior to asphalt (which tears) and comparable to high-end tile, but at a fraction of the weight and cost. Talk to your insurer about discounts; many carriers recognize the UL 2218 Class 4 rating as a major loss-reduction factor. In Randolph's climate, spring hail is occasional but not extreme, so your actual risk is modest—but your protection is exceptional.

How much upkeep does an aluminum metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood?

Aluminum requires virtually no maintenance—no annual inspections, no moss treatment, no wood sealing, no granule replacement. Asphalt shingles need routine moss removal and inspection for splits and curling, especially in climates like Randolph's with 130 cm of snow and 1022 mm of rain yearly. Wood shake deteriorates and requires regular sealing to fight rot and insect damage. Metal roofing is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance because it simply weatherweathers without degrading. Occasional leaf debris removal from valleys is all most owners do. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating won't chalk or fade over 30 years (ASTM D4214 / D2244 tested), so repainting is never needed. You're trading decades of annual work for a set-and-forget roof.

Do I need to reinforce my house framing before installing a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's aluminum Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so it installs over most existing roofs without additional support. Even the heavier Shake profile at 0.58 lb/sq ft is negligible compared to architectural shingles. Your home's framing was built to carry roofing weight; aluminum simply uses a tiny fraction of that capacity. This lightweight advantage lets you overlay an existing roof in many cases, avoiding the labor and disposal cost of a tear-off. It's one of the few renovation decisions where the engineering says you can save money without cutting corners on durability.

Will a metal roof actually reduce my cooling costs in summer?

Metal roofing in energy-efficient colors reflects heat rather than absorbing it like asphalt does. Interlock's reflective coatings achieve thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (measured in Aged Copper Penny), which means more sunlight bounces away instead of heating your attic. Randolph's 3085 annual sunshine hours make this benefit real—every sunny day, a reflective metal roof stays cooler than dark asphalt, reducing air-conditioning load. Cool Roof Rating Council certification backs these numbers. Summer cooling savings vary by attic ventilation and insulation, but metal roofing consistently outperforms asphalt in heat rejection. Paired with the roof's longevity, that energy edge compounds over decades.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost when I could just install asphalt shingles?

Metal roofing costs more initially but becomes the last roof you'll install. Asphalt shingles last 15-25 years and require tear-off, disposal, and reinstallation two or three times over a typical home's life—each cycle incurs labor, debris hauling, and material cost. Interlock's Guardian warranty is lifetime limited (non-prorated material coverage for the original owner) with a transferable 50-year term for the next owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. Zero maintenance, no early replacement, no landfill cycles. Over 50 years, amortizing material and labor together, metal roofing usually costs less total. Plus, the current regional promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation—timing that helps bridge the upfront gap.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Randolph, and how experienced are they?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served the region since 1999, with over two decades of experience installing Interlock systems in Maine's climate. They understand Randolph's freeze-thaw demands, snow loads, and local building code requirements (ICC-ES ESR-1790 compliance). Local installers also mean faster service, easier follow-up, and familiarity with your neighborhood's architectural styles—whether you choose Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, or Standing Seam profiles. They can advise on the current promotion (no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation), inspect your existing roof for overlay feasibility, and handle permitting. Working with a nearby installer gives you accountability and ongoing support that national chains rarely match.
