Review: July 19, 2021 Completion: August 14, 2019

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Pittston

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Pittston, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Pittston.

How does a metal roof handle Maine's heavy snow and ice buildup?

Aluminum's smooth, hard surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt, reducing ice dam formation that damages gutters and causes leaks. Pittston averages about 130 cm of snow annually, and freeze-thaw cycles occur roughly 86 days per year—conditions that crack and curl asphalt shingles but leave aluminum panels unaffected. The four-way interlocking system creates a unified membrane that prevents water infiltration even when snow persists. Optional snow guards can be installed to control avalanche-style shedding if desired.

Will freeze-thaw cycles damage aluminum roofing in Pittston?

No. Aluminum roofing is engineered to thrive through freeze-thaw stress. Pittston experiences about 86 freeze-thaw days yearly over a mean temperature of 8.6°C, which causes asphalt to crack, curl, and lose granules—but aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without brittleness or degradation. The self-healing oxide layer and Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214/D2244) resist the salt spray and moisture that accelerate freeze-thaw damage in older materials. You won't see the splitting and curling that asphalt roofs exhibit in northern climates.

Can metal roofing survive Maine's winter gusts and nor'easters?

Yes. Pittston's typical wind gusts reach 129 km/h, and Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist sustained wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to spec. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together on all edges, creating a unified system that distributes wind load across the entire roof rather than stressing individual fasteners. ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 confirms compliance with IBC/IRC wind-resistance standards. Coastal and mountain installations worldwide prove the system's durability in extreme wind conditions without fastener pull-through or panel separation.

Does metal roofing hold up to hail, and can it lower my insurance costs?

Interlock metal roofing carries the highest impact rating available: UL 2218 Class 4. The warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches, and the aluminum's hardness and flexibility prevent the denting that damages asphalt and wood. Many insurance carriers offer premium discounts for Class 4 impact-rated roofs—contact your agent with the UL 2218 certification. Pittston's gusts and occasional severe weather make impact resistance a practical asset, not an afterthought. The combination of impact durability and reduced maintenance eligibility often translates into measurable savings on your policy over the roof's lifetime.

Is a metal roof heavy enough to need structural reinforcement?

No reinforcement is required. The Interlock Cedar Shingle installs at 0.41 lb per square foot, and even the Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only 0.59 lb per square foot—about 96% lighter than real clay or concrete tile. This extraordinary lightness means the system installs directly over most existing roofs without costly framing upgrades, shortening installation timelines and keeping labor costs down. For comparison, slate and concrete tile require structural reinforcement that can run thousands of dollars. Aluminum's strength-to-weight ratio allows you to gain the aesthetic of heavy materials without the structural expense or complexity.

What warranty covers a metal roof, and how long does it last?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—essentially every failure mode that affects asphalt, wood, and tile. The Alunar coating is separately warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. The warranty is one-time transferable, giving the next owner 50 years of coverage from completion. This structure reflects aluminum's actual lifespan: installations from 1998 remain leak-free and coating-intact today. For a Pittston home facing 86 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 130 cm of snow, a non-prorated lifetime warranty eliminates the uncertainty of traditional 20–25 year asphalt coverage.

How does metal roofing prevent leaks in heavy rainfall?

The four-way interlocking panel system creates overlapped seams on all four edges, so water cannot flow sideways into gaps. Pittston receives about 1022 mm of rain annually, and the overlapping design—combined with solid deck underlayment and optional ice-and-water shield—directs every drop downslope without pooling or backing up. The panels themselves are non-porous aluminum; they don't absorb moisture like asphalt or wood, and their smooth surface sheds water faster. When installed to spec over a solid deck, the system is as leak-proof as metal can be. Thousands of installations in the Pacific Northwest's high-rainfall climates prove the durability under sustained, heavy precipitation.

Do metal roofs save energy costs in Maine?

energy-efficient Interlock colors carry thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), reflecting heat that dark asphalt absorbs and converts to attic warmth. Pittston averages about 3085 sunshine hours per year; even in a cool climate, reflective coatings reduce summer cooling load and lower attic temperatures that degrade shingles and shorten HVAC life. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating quantifies measurable energy benefits. In winter, any solar gain reduces heating demand. Over a 50+ year lifespan, the cumulative energy savings often offset the material's upfront cost, making metal roofing both an environmental and financial choice for northern homes.

What maintenance does a metal roof need in Maine?

Virtually none. Metal roofing requires no re-coating, re-sealing, or shingle replacement—the core appeal over asphalt, wood, and tile. The Alunar fluorocarbon finish is factory-applied to both panel sides and warranted 30 years against chalking and fading; it does not degrade or require renewal. Seasonal leaf and debris removal (same as any roof) keeps gutters clear, but the aluminum surface itself does not rot, crack, curl, or lose granules under Pittston's 130 cm annual snowfall and 86 freeze-thaw days. The roof's simplicity—no fastener inspection, no sealant touch-ups, no wood treatment—translates to lower long-term ownership cost and peace of mind.
