Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Litchfield, Maine
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Our house experiences high wind and exposure to the elements on the Maine coast. Interlock offered competitive pricing on aluminum shingle roofing. The entire experience was good, from quotation, removal of the old roof, and installation of the new roof.
We really like our roof.
Interlock was great, and installation was just as told to us by sales. The crew worked hard, cleaned area each day and roof looks great! I was impressed by their professionalism and also had a call from home office checking during the install and had a visit from a home office inspector checking progress and quality of install.
The roof looks great Jonathan did a great job of explaining the features of the new roof.the crew was great and very professional and did a great clean up after the installation
Our entire experience; inquiry, ordering, installation, and follow up has been excellent. The roof was justifiably costly and definitely worth the investment. The appearance of our house has been greatly enhanced.
Nazar was awesome to fix roof from winter ice damage. !!
Bought this roofing 20 years ago. It was installed well. Needed improvements to my roof structure were suggested and made to ensure the longevity and worthiness of my roof. All these years later I am still happy I made the investment in my 160 year old home.

Interlock was very professional. They installed my roof in a timely manner and the workmanship was great. Glad I went with interlock. Positive: Responsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, Value Services: Roof damage repair, Roof installation
Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation
All of the above...we had a positive experience and live the look of our roof.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Litchfield
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Litchfield, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Litchfield.
Does metal roofing handle Maine's snow and ice the way asphalt does?
Metal roofing sheds snow and ice more effectively than asphalt because its smooth, interlocked aluminum panels create fewer catch points. Litchfield receives about 130 cm of snow annually with roughly 86 freeze-thaw cycles per year—conditions that crack and curl asphalt shingles. Interlock's four-way interlocking system prevents water penetration during thaw cycles. Snow guards are available if you want to control snow slide, but the material itself resists the splitting and ice-dam damage that plague traditional roofs in freeze-thaw climates.
How does aluminum roofing survive Litchfield's freeze-thaw cycles?
Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature swings, but its oxide layer—which self-heals when scratched—protects it from degradation through repeated freezing and thawing. Litchfield experiences about 86 freeze-thaw days annually, the exact environment where asphalt becomes brittle and wood rots. Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy contains no iron, so it cannot rust regardless of moisture or salt exposure. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, remains flexible through temperature extremes, maintaining its seal.
Why doesn't an aluminum metal roof rust in Maine's wet climate?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the only element that oxidizes into the red, flaky corrosion you see on steel roofs. The aluminum oxide that forms on Interlock panels is a thin, protective barrier that actually self-heals when scratched. With Litchfield's 1022 mm of annual rainfall and potential salt air exposure, this immunity to rust is a genuine structural advantage. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating on both panel sides provides a second line of defense, and the Guardian Warranty covers rust for the life of the roof.
Can a metal roof stand up to Litchfield's wind gusts?
Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph, and Litchfield's typical wind gusts reach about 129 km/h (80 mph). The interlocking design distributes wind load across the entire roof system rather than stressing individual fasteners. During New England's autumn and spring storms, that redundancy prevents uplift and loosening. The panels interlock mechanically—not glued—so they move as one unit under pressure while remaining firmly seated. This design is why Interlock has been installed on coastal homes and Antarctic research stations where wind and weather are unforgiving.
Can my house support a metal roof, or do I need to reinforce the frame?
You almost certainly do not need structural reinforcement. Interlock's Slate profile installs at roughly 0.41 lb/sq ft, the Tile at about 0.59 lb/sq ft—approximately 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Standard residential framing built to Maine's building codes handles asphalt easily, and metal weighs a fraction of that. Interlock panels install directly over most existing roofs, so you avoid the cost and disruption of full tear-off. The Guardian Warranty and ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790) confirm structural compatibility with standard residential construction, making retrofit installation straightforward and economical.
Does metal roofing get damaged by hail, and could it lower my insurance?
Interlock aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That durability against hail is one reason some insurers offer discounts on metal roofs, though you should verify your own policy with your agent. In severe storms, asphalt shingles often fail catastrophically and require full replacement; aluminum's hardness and light weight (0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft) mean hail impact is distributed rather than concentrated. Contact your insurance company with Interlock's UL rating and warranty details—the non-combustible, Class A fire-rated option may qualify for additional savings.
Will a metal roof reduce my cooling costs in summer?
Interlock's energy-efficient colors have thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and solar reflectance as high as 0.55, meaning they reflect heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into your home. While Litchfield's mean temperature is only 8.6°C and cooling is a minor load, the reflective benefit compounds over the roof's life and helps during New England's warm months. The Cool Roof Rating Council certification confirms that reflectance measurement. Light-colored profiles like Aged Copper Penny perform best. Over a 50-year lifespan, the cumulative reduction in cooling demand—even if modest—adds value and reduces your carbon footprint without mechanical upgrades.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood?
Metal roofing requires far less maintenance than asphalt or wood. Asphalt shingles need replacement every 15–20 years and regular moss/algae treatment in Maine's moist climate. Wood shakes rot and split, especially with 130 cm of snow and 1022 mm of rain annually. Interlock aluminum resists rot, splitting, cracking, and curling—all covered by the lifetime limited warranty. Occasional leaf debris clearance and inspection of flashing is standard practice for any roof. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance. Over the roof's life, you'll spend a fraction of what asphalt demands in repairs and replacement cycles.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost, or is asphalt cheaper over time?
Asphalt costs less upfront but requires replacement every 15–20 years, typically three to four cycles in a 50–60 year period. Each tear-off and reinstall costs thousands and fills landfills. Interlock's lifetime limited, non-prorated warranty—transferable for 50 years to the next owner—means one installation covers the life of your home. The Alunar 30-year coating warranty and hail resistance (UL 2218 Class 4) eliminate mid-life repairs that plague asphalt. Current financing offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation. When you amortize the cost across decades, with no replacement cycle, metal roofing is the last roof you buy—and that shifts the math decisively in your favor.
Is a metal roof fire-rated, and does it matter in Litchfield?
Interlock aluminum panels are non-combustible and available with a Class A fire classification—the highest rating. Aluminum contains no iron and will not burn; it melts only at 660°C, well above typical structure fires. Maine's building code (adopted via IBC/IRC, verified in Interlock's 2025 ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation) recognizes this advantage, and some insurers offer discounts for non-combustible roofing. In densely forested Kennebec County, where wildfire risk exists, a roof that cannot ignite adds a real margin of safety. Class A rating also supports future insurance or lending scenarios where fire performance is evaluated. The lifetime warranty covers fire damage within coverage terms, making this a practical long-term protection.
