Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Kitsilano, British Columbia
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |

What our customers are saying:
Fantastic service, clear & consistent communication, and a beautiful, durable product. Simply one of the best contractors we have ever worked with. We got quotes from numerous leading roofers for this job. Mike from Interlock was the only one who came to our house, spent an evening patiently explaining every aspect of the job, showed us many photos and described some of the technical aspects in ways that were easy to understand. When we called back with more questions, he was always available and always super helpful. For the installation, Mike recognized that we had an old house and were concerned about the workmanship. He sent us an experienced crew led by Oswaldo that went above and beyond any expectation we could have had. They not only protected our home but also took pains to protect the neighbors' homes beside ours. They gave us near daily briefings and showed us photos of everything they found on our roof and their work throughout. The job ended up taking much longer than anticipated because our roof had many problems that needed to be repaired. Oswaldo and Mike worked with us to make sure everything was taken care of and repaired before the new roofing was put on. They proved flexible and extremely diligent, communicating effectively throughout. We are thrilled with the result and grateful for all their hard work. We would not hesitate to use their services again and highly recommend them to anyone looking for roofers. As a bonus, we're delighted that we will never send another huge pile of asphalt shingles to the landfill again!
Definitely not the cheapest roof but looks good! The people worked hard during the hottest days of summer and cleaned up after the job was done! It rained heavily two days after the roof was finished! No concerns! Well done!
I would suggest the sales team advise potential clients that even in a climate like Vancouver, due to the slickness of the roofing material that would be advisable to install snow guards. If the home is in close proximity to another dwelling.
Start date verbally agreed upon was not honoured.
None at this time. Great overall experience with the entire Interlock team.
I would recommend Interlock Roofing because their product works fine. I think they need to manage the schedule better because on our project sometimes they missed days but they would call us. I had a good experience because Interlock Roofing finished before their deadline.
Interlock Roofing could improve on communication with the office staff and with the installation crew.
Absolutely would recommend their products & installation. Was a great pleasure to work with the whole team - from sales to installation Great experience working with Interlock - the entire crew was fantastic
Roof looks great but it is an expensive investment. A supervisor visiting on site more often and better clean-up. Overall, we think the new roof is wonderful. We have noticed cooler temperatures this summer which is a pleasant surprise. The garbage left behind for several days after completion was not acceptable. The mess attracted rodents and smelled terrible.
Working schedule for 3rd party contractors that Interlock brings in for some of the job requirements. Thank you to the whole team at Interlock for a job well done. We love our roof and the snow guards:), Everything looks amazing. Looking forward to the next project with you all.
None
Absolutely. The only thing Interlock Roofing could improve on for our experience is the clean afterwards. Need to find a better way to get the majority of the little metal pieces that are all over the ground.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Kitsilano
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Kitsilano, British Columbia. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Kitsilano.
How does a metal roof handle Kitsilano's heavy snow load and freeze-thaw cycles?
Metal roofs shed snow more effectively than asphalt because aluminum's smooth, hard surface prevents ice dams from forming—critical in a region that averages about 120 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 37 freeze-thaw days per year. The four-way interlocking panels remain structurally sound through repeated freezing and thawing, resisting the expansion stress that cracks asphalt shingles. Snow guards can be added if desired. The material itself never becomes brittle in cold, unlike asphalt, which hardens and loses flexibility below 0°C.
With over 2400 mm of annual rain in Kitsilano, how does a metal roof prevent leaks?
Kitsilano receives approximately 2471 mm of rain yearly—metal roofs are engineered to channel this water off rapidly and completely. The four-way interlocking panels create a labyrinth seal at every seam; water cannot travel uphill against gravity or capillary action. Unlike asphalt shingles, which degrade and allow granule-clogged gutters to trap water, metal panels have no granules to shed. Installation over solid decking with underlayment creates a fail-safe system. Over 26 years of installations across British Columbia's wet coastal climate proves this design in the harshest conditions.
Why can't aluminum roofing rust, and does that matter in Kitsilano?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—rust requires iron to oxidize. Instead, aluminum forms a thin, transparent oxide layer that actually protects the metal beneath and self-heals when scratched. In Kitsilano's salt-air environment (within 15 km of Georgia Strait), this is a distinct advantage over steel roofing, which requires constant maintenance to prevent rust. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum coated with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon on both sides, adding 30-year protection against chalking and fading—a safeguard especially valuable near the coast.
Can my house handle a metal roof, or do I need structural reinforcement?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock metal roofing weighs extraordinarily little—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at only 0.59 lb/sq ft, about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Most homes can support a metal roof directly over existing asphalt shingles because the load is so minimal. This means no costly framing upgrades, no reroofing delays, and faster installation. In contrast, traditional tile can weigh 12–15 lb/sq ft, creating structural demands that many homes simply cannot meet without expensive reinforcement.
Will a metal roof hold up to Kitsilano's winter winds and storms?
Kitsilano experiences typical daily winds around 11 km/h with gusts reaching up to 95 km/h during winter storms. Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification, and carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available. The four-way interlocking panel design means each section is mechanically locked to its neighbors on all sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof system rather than placing stress on individual fasteners. This engineering has proven itself in Antarctic research stations and coastal installations across Canada.
How much maintenance does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or wood?
Metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance—no moss treatment, no granule replacement, no shingle repairs. Asphalt shingles deteriorate from UV and weather exposure, requiring regular inspection and often partial replacement within 15–20 years. Wood shakes split and rot, demanding expensive repairs, especially in Kitsilano's wet climate with 2471 mm annual rainfall. Metal panels never rot, split, curl, or crack; the Alunar coating resists fading and chalking for 30 years. The roof is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, meaning lower long-term ownership costs and fewer safety risks from climbing ladders for repairs.
Is a metal roof worth the extra cost over asphalt in Kitsilano?
The upfront cost of metal roofing is higher than asphalt, but over a 40–50 year lifespan it is substantially cheaper. An asphalt roof lasts 15–20 years, requiring tear-off and replacement two to three times in that period—each replacement costs thousands plus landfill disposal. A metal roof installed today will still be protecting your home in 40 years, and thanks to the one-time transferable Guardian Warranty, the next owner gains 50 years of coverage from completion. Current promotion: interest-free payments for 3 months and save at least $2499 on installation. That math favors metal: one roof for life, no cycles of replacement waste.
What warranty comes with Interlock metal roofing, and how long will it really last?
Interlock offers the Guardian Warranty—a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. This warranty is one-time transferable to the next owner for 50 years from completion, a rare benefit that protects resale value. Manufactured continuously since 1998 in Delta, BC, the product has been installed on homes in every Canadian climate zone and even at an Antarctic research station. Durability in those extreme conditions—harsh salt air, deep snow, extreme wind—demonstrates that 40–50+ year service life is realistic, not a sales promise.
How long does a metal roof installation take, and can it be installed over my existing roof?
Most installations complete in 1–3 days, depending on roof size and complexity—much faster than tearing off and replacing asphalt shingles, which can take a week or more. Yes, Interlock metal roofing can be installed directly over existing asphalt shingles if the roof deck is sound; the weight is so light (the Slate profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft) that no structural reinforcement is required. This saves thousands in tear-off labor and landfill fees, and gets you back under a finished roof quickly. Interlock Metal Roofing (BC) Ltd. has served the region since 1983 and handles all permitting and inspection coordination.
Is metal roofing actually more environmentally responsible than asphalt?
Yes. Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable; at end of life, your roof returns to the material cycle rather than a landfill. Asphalt roofing, by contrast, ends up as construction waste—tearing off and replacing an asphalt roof multiple times over 50 years creates tonnage of landfill burden. Because a metal roof lasts 40–50+ years versus 15–20 for asphalt, you avoid the entire cycle of repeated tear-off, replacement, and disposal. For a region with 2788 hours of sunshine annually, energy-efficient colors with up to 0.55 solar reflectance also reduce cooling demand, lowering your home's carbon footprint while reflecting the heat that asphalt absorbs.
