Review: February 22, 2021 Completion: February 10, 2021

We were looking towards metal (vs composite) roofing materials as we wanted an increase in fire resistance, and slippery surface to prevent fir needle gathering and moss growth resistance. The product looks great and sheds water and snow. We hope to see similar results with the fir needs and no moss growth. There has not been a noticeable increase in the sound of rain on the roof. We chose Interlock Roofing based on the material (Aluminum less heat retention), lifetime/50yr warranty, ease and quality of installation methods, no color fading, slickness of roof to prevent moss or needle accumulation (thereby fewer trip for me on the roof). The sales team was punctual, courteous, knowledgeable and helpful in discussing the product. They were timely in responding to my questions even after the sale. The office team, May H, was courteous and helpful in keeping us aware of the installation schedule and what was expected from us. The installation team of 4 people was professional and efficient. Completing our 42 square roof in 1.5 days. They were respectful of our environment in that their talking was in conversation tones (not yelling back and forth) and did not use foul language -- even when it appeared someone accidentally dropped an item. An area of improvement would be to have the installation crew perform a final walk around the gutters (on all levels) to ensure there are no nails, metal fragments, or old roofing left in the gutters. I found a dozen nails and half dozen scraps that could have covered the downspouts openings. Have installation crews introduce themselves to the homeowners. Identify who is the site lead. Place a placard (magnetic sign or dash board sign) on the installation crews vehicles as to the company name. I was concerned who was coming into my property, since I was not expecting anyone the day they arrived. I would like a copy of the before, after, and drone video of the installation.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Banks

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Banks, Oregon. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Banks.

Why doesn't aluminum metal roofing rust like steel roofs, and does that matter in Oregon?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that corrodes. Instead, it forms a self-healing oxide layer that repairs itself when scratched, which is why Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloys have been installed everywhere from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctica since 1998. In Banks, where you receive about 1208 mm of rain and 29 cm of snow yearly, that means no rust stains streaking your siding, no structural deterioration hidden under shingles, and no surprise leaks from corrosion perforation—a permanent advantage over steel alternatives.

Can a metal roof handle the wind gusts we get near Banks?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification—well above the gusts of about 120 km/h your region experiences. The interlocking design means panels lock together on all four sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than stressing individual fasteners. Washington County's typical wind gusts won't compromise the system, and the mechanical bond actually strengthens performance in the high-wind events your area occasionally records.

How does metal roofing handle the heavy rain Banks gets?

Metal roofing sheds water faster and more completely than asphalt shingles because the smooth, interlocking panels create a continuous barrier with no granule-trapping debris or curl-prone seams. Banks averages about 1208 mm of rain per year—substantial, but metal's design handles volume without pooling or saturation. The four-way interlock prevents water from being driven sideways into overlaps during hard rain; water moves straight down the slope. When combined with proper underlayment and a solid deck (standard for retrofit), leak risk is virtually eliminated.

Do I need to reinforce my roof framing to support a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, the Shake at 0.58, and the Mediterranean Tile at 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than actual concrete or clay tile. Most existing roofs can support the weight without modification, and in some cases you can install directly over your current shingles, saving tear-off labor and landfill fees. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms compliance with standard framing requirements, so a structural engineer or your installer can verify readiness in minutes.

Is metal roofing really hail-proof, and will my insurance company care?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That's rare hail, and your panels won't dent or lose integrity in typical storms. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer discounts on premiums because your risk of water damage claims drops significantly. While Banks doesn't face severe hail like mountain valleys, the resilience is a permanent asset that can lower your annual insurance cost—ask your agent if they offer metal roofing credits.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need compared to asphalt or wood?

Metal requires virtually no ongoing maintenance. Asphalt shingles need granule replacement and re-sealing every 5–10 years; wood shakes demand treatment, annual inspection, and moss removal. Interlock aluminum is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance because its Alunar 70% PVDF coating—warranted 30 years against chalking and fading—simply doesn't degrade or require repainting. In Banks's 1208 mm annual rainfall and about 37 freeze-thaw days per year, the absence of wood rot, asphalt deterioration, or moss-prone surfaces means you set it and leave it for decades.

Will a metal roof lower my cooling costs, or is that just marketing?

It depends on your color choice. energy-efficient Interlock colors offer initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny) and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they bounce heat away rather than absorb it the way dark asphalt does. In Banks, with about 3033 annual sunshine hours, that reflection advantage compounds over time. Lighter profiles reduce heat absorption in summer and work alongside proper attic ventilation to lower air-conditioning demand. Cooler roof surfaces also extend the life of ventilation components—a tangible benefit in your climate.

What's the installation timeline, and can you put a metal roof over my old shingles?

Yes, in most cases. A retrofit installation over existing shingles eliminates tear-off labor and saves thousands in disposal costs—and it shortens the job. A typical residential roof takes 3–5 days depending on pitch and complexity. Installing over your current roof requires a solid deck; if structural issues exist, tear-off is necessary. Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc. has served the region since 1997 and can assess your roof structure at no cost to confirm whether retrofit is viable. Installation happens faster than traditional roofing, so your home is weather-sealed quickly.

How long will a metal roof last, and what does the warranty actually cover?

Interlock's Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's transferable once, giving the next homeowner 50 years of coverage from completion—a massive resale advantage. The product has been manufactured since 1998, so we have real-world performance data across 25+ years and wildly different climates. In Banks's variable conditions—1208 mm rain, 29 cm snow, and about 37 freeze-thaw cycles annually—the durability is backed by demonstrated field history, not just promises.

Is metal roofing actually more sustainable than asphalt shingles?

Yes, measurably. Aluminum is about 95% recyclable and never ends up in a landfill; when a metal roof eventually reaches end-of-life decades from now, it's melted down and reused indefinitely. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, are torn off every 15–25 years and sent to landfills by the millions of tons annually. Over a 50-year span in Banks, you'll tear off three to four layers of asphalt while keeping one aluminum roof. The recycling supply chain is mature and valuable; scrap aluminum commands resale value, offsetting disposal cost. Choosing metal eliminates the tear-off-to-landfill cycle entirely.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Banks’s climate?

Yes. Banks averages about 29 cm of snow, 1208 mm of rain, roughly 37 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 120 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
