Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Caledonia, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!
Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!
We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.
This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!
I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.
Scheduling
I think Interlock Roofing could have improved on the timing and having more flexibility in terms of when the project starts.
Communication on delivery and actual start time
The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Caledonia
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Caledonia, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Caledonia.
How does a metal roof handle Caledonia's snow and ice buildup?
Metal roofing sheds snow far better than asphalt because its smooth, interlocking aluminum surface doesn't grip ice the way granulated shingles do. Caledonia averages about 81 cm of snow annually with roughly 85 freeze-thaw cycles per year — conditions that crack and curl asphalt but leave aluminum unaffected. The four-way interlocking panels stay structurally sound through repeated thawing, and snow slides off cleanly, reducing ice-dam risk. Optional snow guards let you control where snow falls if needed.
Does aluminum roofing crack or warp from freeze-thaw cycles?
No. Aluminum has no moisture absorption, so it cannot absorb water, freeze, expand, and crack the way wood, asphalt, and concrete do. With about 85 freeze-thaw days annually in Caledonia and mean temperatures around 9.7°C, materials that expand and contract fail quickly — but aluminum's oxide layer remains stable through unlimited cycles. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy maintains its integrity year after year, unlike slate or clay tile, which can crack in just a few cycles.
Can aluminum roofing rust like steel roofing does?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; iron is what oxidizes and corrodes in steel. Instead, aluminum forms a thin, self-healing oxide layer that actually protects the metal beneath. Even with Caledonia's annual 863 mm of rainfall, that oxide film repairs itself when scratched. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating applied to both sides adds 30 years of warranted fade and chalk resistance, so your roof stays protected through decades of wet weather without the corrosion problems that plague steel roofs in climates like yours.
Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?
Almost never. The Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft — roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile — so it installs directly over most existing roofs without structural work. Even the Shake profile at 0.58 lb/sq ft adds barely any load. Compare that to real slate or tile, which require expensive reinforcement in older homes. Because aluminum is so light, installers can typically remove old asphalt and install new metal without touching your framing, saving thousands and keeping your project timeline tight.
How well does metal roofing hold up to Caledonia's wind gusts?
The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification. Caledonia experiences typical daily-max winds around 19 km/h with gusts reaching 97 km/h — well within the roof's rated capacity. The interlocking design means each panel locks to its neighbors in all four directions, so wind cannot lift individual panels. This engineering is why Interlock roofing has been installed on everything from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station, where weather is far more extreme than what Illinois brings.
Can a metal roof help me get an insurance discount for hail damage?
Aluminum roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating — the highest available — and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 impact resistance often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because aluminum roofs are simply tougher under impact than asphalt or wood. Given Caledonia's about 3079 hours of sunshine annually and exposure to thunderstorms typical of the region, this durability matters. Check with your insurer; many offer 10-20% discounts for Class 4-rated roofing, which can recover a significant portion of your material investment in just a few years.
Does metal roofing save money on cooling costs?
Yes. Interlock's energy-efficient colors reflect solar heat rather than absorbing it the way asphalt does. Aged Copper Penny and similar finishes achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, keeping your attic cooler in warm months. Caledonia logs roughly 3079 annual sunshine hours, so that reflection adds up through the year. The Cool Roof Rating Council certification backs these performance numbers. Over time, the reduced cooling load offsets part of your material cost, and it keeps your home more comfortable without cranking the air conditioning as hard.
How much maintenance does a metal roof actually need?
Virtually none compared to asphalt, wood, or tile. Aluminum doesn't rot, split, crack, curl, or lose granules. You don't need to recoat it, caulk it, or replace individual damaged shakes like you do with real cedar or shake. Rain at 863 mm annually and regular weather keep the roof naturally clean. The CALGreen-verified roofing reduces ongoing maintenance to occasional gutter cleaning and inspection — the same as any roof. This translates to real savings over 40+ years, since you're not paying for repairs, replacements, or preventive treatments that other materials demand.
What warranty does Interlock Metal Roofing actually stand behind?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner — that means it covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance for your entire ownership. It's even one-time transferable, giving the next owner 50 years from completion date. No other roofing material matches that. The Alunar coating itself carries a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading. For a homeowner in Caledonia installing their last roof, this means decades of zero-worry protection backed by the manufacturer since 1998.
Is aluminum roofing better for the environment than asphalt?
Yes. Aluminum roofing is approximately 95% recyclable, so at the end of its life — which could be 50+ years — the material recovers value and returns to manufacturing cycles. Asphalt, by contrast, is torn off, dumped in landfills, and becomes waste. Over Caledonia's annual 863 mm of rainfall and typical weather, a metal roof also eliminates the need for multiple replacements: one asphalt roof lasts 15-20 years; metal lasts for your lifetime and beyond. That means fewer tear-offs to the landfill and fewer manufacturing cycles needed per century of roofing. It's the single biggest environmental win a homeowner can make in a roof replacement.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Caledonia’s climate?
Yes. Caledonia averages about 81 cm of snow, 863 mm of rain, roughly 85 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 97 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
