Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Poplar Grove, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!
Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!
We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.
This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!
I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.
Scheduling
I think Interlock Roofing could have improved on the timing and having more flexibility in terms of when the project starts.
Communication on delivery and actual start time
The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Poplar Grove
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Poplar Grove, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Poplar Grove.
Does metal roofing handle heavy snow? What about ice dams in Illinois winters?
Metal roofing sheds snow and ice far better than asphalt because the smooth, slippery surface doesn't trap moisture the way granules do. Poplar Grove gets roughly 81 cm of snow annually plus about 85 freeze-thaw cycles per year—conditions that crack and degrade asphalt but leave aluminum unharmed. Interlock panels are warranted to resist 120 mph winds, which matters when snow slides off. Add snow guards if you want to control shedding onto lower roofs or walkways. The lightweight design (Slate installs at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural upgrades needed, even loaded with snow.
Will a metal roof crack or fail from freeze-thaw cycles?
No. Aluminum expands and contracts but doesn't crack, split, or absorb water the way wood, asphalt, and concrete do. With 85 freeze-thaw days per year in Poplar Grove, traditional materials fail steadily; metal stays stable. The aluminum alloy (ASTM B209 3105-H24) is designed for exactly this climate stress. The four-way interlocking system accommodates movement without compromising the seal. That's why the Guardian Warranty covers cracking and splitting—because aluminum simply won't do either. After 25 years, your asphalt shingles will be in pieces; your metal roof will look the same.
How does a metal roof hold up in hail, and can it lower my insurance bill?
Interlock carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That's genuine protection, not marketing. Many insurers recognize this and offer discounts on homes with metal roofs because claims are rare. Poplar Grove experiences spring and summer storms; a metal roof rated for the worst-case hail will survive them while asphalt shingles develop leaks. Talk to your agent about a quote with a metal roof versus your current material—savings often offset part of the material cost over the roof's life.
Can metal roofing actually survive high winds in the Midwest?
Yes. Poplar Grove averages gusts to 97 km/h (about 60 mph) during normal weather, but Midwest spring storms push higher. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist 120 mph sustained wind when installed to specification—roughly twice what this region's typical gusts deliver. That's not theoretical; the same system is installed from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station. The panels lock together so tightly that wind pressure can't separate or lift them. After a tornado or derecho, you'll be the neighbor still roofed while others are fighting insurance claims.
Do I need to reinforce my roof frame for a metal roof?
Almost never. The Slate profile weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft, the Shake 0.58, and even the Mediterranean Tile—which looks like clay—weighs only 0.59 lb/sq ft. That Tile profile is roughly 96% lighter than actual concrete or clay tile, so your existing wood frame already supports it easily. Compare that to the 12+ lb/sq ft of real tile, and you see why metal eliminates costly structural work. Most homes can install a metal roof over the existing shingles without upgrades. Have your contractor check local load requirements, but weight is rarely the issue—asphalt shingles weigh nearly the same anyway.
What's the warranty on a metal roof, and does it transfer if I sell?
The Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner—it covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance with no dollar caps or percentage deductibles. When you sell, it becomes one-time transferable, giving the next owner 50 years of protection from completion. Most asphalt roofs are garbage by year 20; at year 20, yours will still be under warranty and pristine. This matters on resale: buyers see a roof that won't need replacement for decades, which translates to real equity. That's the math of buying once.
How much upkeep does a metal roof really need?
Almost none. Unlike asphalt (which loses granules every rain), wood (which splits and rots), or tile (which breaks and leaks), aluminum needs no annual inspections, treatment, or repairs. It won't grow moss, won't curl, and won't degrade under Poplar Grove's 3,079 sunshine hours per year or its 863 mm of rain. Rinse it if tree debris piles up, that's it. The Alunar coating is warrantied 30 years against fading and chalking, so color stays vivid. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance versus traditional materials. Over a 50-year lifespan, you'll spend a few hundred dollars on maintenance instead of tens of thousands replacing shingles.
Will a metal roof make my home hotter in summer?
The opposite. energy-efficient Interlock colors have thermal emissivity of 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny)—they reflect the sun's heat instead of absorbing it like asphalt does. Your attic and upper floor stay cooler, cutting air-conditioning load. Cool Roof Rating Council testing confirms measurable performance. In a climate with 3,079 sunshine hours annually like Poplar Grove, that reflection matters month after month. Dark asphalt roofs can reach 160°F; reflective metal stays cool enough to touch. Lower cooling costs, slower HVAC wear, and reduced peak demand fees—that's money in your pocket.
Is metal roofing actually better for the environment?
Yes. Interlock panels are roughly 95% recyclable aluminum; when they eventually need replacement (in 50+ years), they go to recycling facilities, not landfills. Compare that to asphalt shingles: millions of tons end up in dumps every year because tear-off waste isn't worth recycling. Over Poplar Grove's 81 cm of annual snowfall and 863 mm of rain, asphalt deteriorates fast and gets replaced three times while one metal roof lasts. Three roof-dumps versus zero. The aluminum came from bauxite mining, which is a real cost, but recycling aluminum uses 95% less energy than mining new ore. Your metal roof's recycled content and recyclability close the loop.
Does Interlock have a local installer in Poplar Grove?
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing has been serving the region since 2001 and knows Illinois winters, spring storms, and the specific building codes for Boone County. Local installers understand your climate—they know how 85 freeze-thaw days per year stresses roofs and how to spec snow guards, flashing details, and ventilation for your specific home. They're ICC-ES ESR-1790 compliant and familiar with town permitting. Call for a walk-around; a good local crew can show you finished work in your neighborhood and handle warranty service without delay or shipping costs.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Poplar Grove’s climate?
Yes. Poplar Grove averages about 81 cm of snow, 863 mm of rain, roughly 85 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 97 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
