Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Herbert, Illinois
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |

What our customers are saying:
We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
Very heavy investment, but worth every cent! I worked with John and he was very mindful in planning everything out- especially the finer details of what was needed for the house and for the project. His crew was spectacular in their workmanship and friendliness. The only minor issue I had was the scheduling of the project- which is of nobody's fault. Things get done when they get done and those who are waiting, will be happy they waited. Not exaggerating, many customers will be quite pleased with the end result. I'm one of them. Many thanks, John, crew & Interlock!
Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!
We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I'll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.
This project has been a roller coaster: First they were doing a good job, then not, then they assured us of the results and things looked good until we questioned something and they completely dropped the ball. They took our money and never followed up. Communication by Allen Gessell seems to be the weak link. He was horrible and ghosted us. It is a HUGE SHAME that what could have been a wonderful situation has become a fearful nightmare!
I'm really excited and pleased with the roof. I love everything about it in terms of color, style, and installation. Everything was done to our utmost satisfaction. Interlock Roofing could have improved the price. The price was expensive. It was a fantastic experience.
Scheduling
I think Interlock Roofing could have improved on the timing and having more flexibility in terms of when the project starts.
Communication on delivery and actual start time
The entire team (from sales to installation) was very clear regarding the timeline and next steps for the entire project. The end product looks great and is a vast improvement compared to the appearance of our prior roof. Good clear communication. No issues on my end.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Herbert
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Herbert, Illinois. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Herbert.
Will metal roofing hold up to Herbert's freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes—aluminum thrives in freeze-thaw conditions because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or becoming brittle. Herbert experiences about 81 freeze-thaw days per year, which degrades asphalt shingles and can split wood shakes, but aluminum's non-porous structure and self-healing oxide layer remain unaffected by repeated temperature swings. The four-way interlocking design accommodates movement without gaps, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating rated for 30 years against fading (ASTM D4214/D2244) won't embrittle in cold. That's why Interlock panels have been installed from coastal homes to Antarctic research stations.
How does metal roofing handle the snow load and ice dams in Boone County?
Metal roofing's extremely low weight—the Shake profile installs at only 0.58 lb/sq ft—means Herbert's average 71 cm annual snowfall creates no structural risk, and snow sheds cleanly from the smooth, slippery surface without backing up into ice dams. Unlike asphalt (which traps heat underneath) or wood (which retains moisture), aluminum's reflective energy-efficient finishes reduce the warmth that triggers melt-and-refreeze cycles. Combined with proper ventilation and optional snow guards, this profile handles the region's typical 22 km/h winds and gusts to 98 km/h without snow shifting unexpectedly. The warranty covers wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to spec.
Can a metal roof actually rust, or is that just marketing talk?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the only element that oxidizes to produce rust. Instead, aluminum instantly forms a paper-thin, self-healing oxide layer (Al₂O₃) that seals the surface. When scratched or exposed to Herbert's 853 mm annual rainfall, this layer repairs itself within hours, protecting the underlying metal. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) meets ICC-ES ESR-1790 code evaluation, and the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish—applied to both sides of every panel—adds an extra 30-year warranty against corrosion in salt air or industrial environments. You'll never see rust stains running down your gutters or brown oxide bleeding into your yard.
Does metal roofing help with insurance costs after hail damage?
Metal roofing's UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—qualifies for insurance discounts in many regions because it resists hail without perforation up to 1.5 inches. The warranty explicitly covers hail impact, meaning claims go against the manufacturer, not your deductible, if a stone pierces the panel. Herbert's climate brings occasional severe weather with wind gusts to 98 km/h, and the four-way interlocking system distributes impact stress across the whole roof rather than concentrating it on a single shingle. Contact your insurer with the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation report to confirm your premium reduction; many homeowners recover half the installation cost within 5 years.
Will reflective metal roofing actually reduce cooling costs in Illinois?
energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve up to 0.55 initial solar reflectance (Aged Copper Penny profile) and 0.84 thermal emissivity, meaning they bounce summer heat back into the sky instead of absorbing it like asphalt does. Herbert receives about 3087 sunshine hours annually, so even a northern Illinois climate benefits from reduced attic temperature, lowering air-conditioning load on hot summer days. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms measurable energy savings. Paired with proper attic ventilation, this reflective advantage compounds over the 50-year transfer warranty term, reducing your heating/cooling costs compared to dark asphalt that traps heat year-round.
Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for metal roofing?
No structural reinforcement is necessary. The Mediterranean Tile profile—which replicates the weight of real tile—installs at 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it about 96% lighter than the concrete or clay tiles it mimics. This means the roof can typically be installed directly over an existing asphalt roof without adding load to your home's frame. Most homes in Herbert don't need framing upgrades. Compare that to real slate or concrete tile, which would require expensive structural reinforcement. The ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation covers installation over existing roofs, and the four-way interlocking system distributes the minimal weight evenly, preventing localized stress points that could cause sagging after 71 cm of annual snow accumulation.
What does the lifetime warranty actually cover, and how long does it last?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance with no dollar caps. You're also protected by Alunar's 30-year coating warranty against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244 measured). The warranty transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, which means when you sell your Herbert home, the new owner gets five decades of coverage, improving curb appeal and resale value. Because aluminum cannot rust and the oxide layer self-heals after exposure to the 853 mm rain and 71 freeze-thaw days Herbert experiences annually, material claims are rare—most coverage is transferable peace-of-mind that outlasts the homeowner.
Is metal roofing really the last roof you'll ever buy?
For most homeowners, yes. A typical asphalt roof lasts 15–25 years in climates like Herbert's, where 853 mm annual rainfall and 81 freeze-thaw cycles accelerate granule loss and brittleness; you'll replace it 2–3 times in 50 years. Metal roofing is warrantied for the original owner's lifetime and transfers 50 years to the next owner, eliminating tear-off costs and waste. When you amortize the cost of an asphalt roof replacement, disposal fees, and labor over that period, metal roofing's per-year cost becomes competitive—and it never requires the underlayment, flashing repairs, or re-nailing that older roofs demand. The ICC-ES ESR-1790 code compliance and Class 4 hail rating mean lower insurance costs too. Calculate your cost-per-year, not sticker price alone.
Is metal roofing actually fire-resistant?
Metal roofing achieves Class A fire classification because aluminum is non-combustible—it cannot ignite or fuel a fire. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (reissued 2025, covering both IBC and IRC code families) confirms roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy meets Class A fire standards when installed to specification. This is why metal roofing qualifies for fire-resistance insurance discounts in regions prone to wildfire. Herbert's climate doesn't pose wildfire risk, but Class A rating provides additional safety and code compliance for commercial applications, rental properties, or if you plan to resell. The non-combustibility certification also simplifies code approval for renovations and gives peace-of-mind that flying embers from a neighbor's chimney or debris cannot ignite your roof.
Does Interlock Metal Roofing serve Herbert, Illinois?
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing has been serving the Boone County region since 2001, offering installation of all five Interlock profiles: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile. The company manufactures in Delta, BC, and has installed panels in climates ranging from coastal salt-air to Antarctica, so Herbert's 98 km/h wind gusts, 71 cm annual snowfall, and 853 mm rainfall are well within their expertise. Installation timelines vary by roof complexity, but the four-way interlocking system and ability to install over existing roofs keeps labor efficient. Contact Interlock directly to request a local site visit, discuss your profile preference, and confirm warranty coverage starting on your completion date.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Herbert’s climate?
Yes. Herbert averages about 71 cm of snow, 853 mm of rain, roughly 81 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 98 km/h.
