Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for South Bend, Washington
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
Prompt service and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
My wife and I wanted a long-term roof and I think we found it. The product seems very good and are installer Daniel was terrific and a trooper put a lot of hours and a lot of time and made it look real nice when it was completed. I would recommend the company if you're looking for a metal roof.
Ivan Excellent will make it right!!
We needed a roof repair when our neighbors tree dropped a large limb through our roof. Ivan came And accessed The damage, Ordered the sheets we needed. He came back and did the whole Repair himself. So happy to have it fixed along with his recommendations to have the roof cleaned. We appreciate his skills in repairing The roof.
The Interlock associate Ivan, came did an awesome service in correcting the part needed to be corrected, he left us with instructions of what we needed to check and to get in touch with, if needed 😀 Ms. May the associate answering the phone was helpful for us to get prompt service. They are dependable. We received roof service.
The work was efficient and well done. The service, the people and team were great. Beautiful roof.
I highly appreciate the professionalism, workmanship and the quality of materials used. I don't doubt that it will be our forever roof and will not need to worry about replacement during the life of our house. Ross, Tony, Roma were all great throughout the new roof installation process.
We noticed water spots on the ceiling. Ivan came, found a hole likely caused by a branch in the recent wind storm. He repaired the hole on the spot. Thank you Ivan!
Ivan replaced our exhaust vent on the roof that had some leaking issue. We were impressed with his professionalism, courtesy and fixing the problem to our utmost satisfaction. We certainly would recommend him and the company for any roofing issues being it a new roof or repairs.
We recently had our roof replaced with interlock aluminum shingles and we love how it made our house stand out in our neighborhood. I would have given 5 stars but there were few things that I wanted to point out. Ross arrived on time and did an excellent presentation. I specifically asked him if their installers are contractors and his answer was no, they are employees of interlock. Turns out they are contractors which is no big deal as long as they do excellent work, it’s all about honesty. Prior to installation, the installers told me that it would take about two and a half days to finish which is great, I said no rush. The installation process took two weeks, I hope everything will go well this coming rainy season. The only thing I didn’t like was at the end of the day they leave their tools in the driveway just laying around and the worst they leave their microwave plugged into the outlet with damaged power cord. But with all things said, we love our new roof and only time will tell if it was worth the price.
Excellent contact and coordination with field representatives and installers/project manager.
We recently had our roof replaced with aluminum shingles and are very satisfied so far. - Easy Sales Process – Thank you Ross for making everything clear and straightforward from the start. - Great Value – The price was very reasonable compared to other estimates. - Better Than Expected – The finished look exceeded our expectations and really improved the appearance of our home. It’s not as glossy as we feared, which we like. - Fast & Efficient – The crew worked quickly and finished everything in just 2 days for our ~1,000 sq. ft. house with two layers of old shingles. - No Issues – No noise at all, despite common concerns about metal roofs. Tip for others: Ask for the exact model and size of vents that will be installed before the project starts. Our vents were only a few months old but couldn’t be reused, and the ones the company brought were the wrong size. The crew had to buy replacements last minute, which worked but don’t perfectly match.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in South Bend
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in South Bend, Washington. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in South Bend.
How does a metal roof handle South Bend's snow and ice buildup?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice more effectively than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface doesn't trap moisture the way shingles do. South Bend averages about 52 cm of snow annually with roughly 11 freeze-thaw cycles per year, which means your roof cycles between expansion and contraction constantly. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind gusts up to 120 mph, so the structure stays secure even when snow loads shift. The lightweight aluminum means no structural reinforcement is needed, and you can add snow guards if you prefer controlled shedding near walkways or driveways.
Does metal roofing handle heavy rainfall without leaking?
Yes. South Bend receives about 2211 mm of rain annually, and metal roofs shed water faster than they can accumulate it. The four-way interlocking panels lock horizontally and vertically, so water drains through the seams by design rather than pooling or backing up. Installation follows ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 standards, which includes underlayment and proper sealing of all penetrations. A solid deck underneath (often your existing roof) plus quality underlayment stops any moisture that finds a seam. Metal roofing actually outperforms asphalt in heavy rain because it doesn't degrade or absorb water over time.
Can a metal roof rust in the Pacific Northwest climate?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. The material used in Interlock panels is aerospace-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), and when exposed to air, aluminum naturally forms a thin protective oxide layer that heals itself if scratched. Over that sits a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish applied to both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. With 2211 mm of annual rain and coastal moisture reaching inland, this dual-layer protection matters: the finish shields the aluminum from salt air and wet climate corrosion that would destroy steel. Your roof stays structurally sound for decades without the iron-oxide breakdown that weakens other metals.
Is a metal roof worth the higher upfront cost?
Metal roofs cost more upfront but become cheaper over the roof's full life. Asphalt shingles typically last 15–20 years and require tear-off and landfill disposal, plus mounting labor costs each time. Interlock's Guardian Warranty covers the original owner for life—non-prorated material coverage for rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and impact resistance. One transfer to the next owner extends protection 50 years from completion. Over a 50-year horizon, you're buying one roof instead of three. Add in near-zero maintenance (no annual inspections, no algae treatment), no structural reinforcement costs because aluminum is 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, and the fact that your home stays cooler in summer (reflecting heat asphalt absorbs), and the financial gap narrows fast. Current financing offers no payments or interest until Spring 2027, making the entry cost smoother too.
Will a metal roof hold up to South Bend's wind gusts?
Absolutely. South Bend's typical daily-max winds average about 19 km/h, but gusts reach 122 km/h—similar to moderate gales. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels lock each piece to the ones above, below, left, and right, creating a unified surface that doesn't lift or separate. The warranty covers wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating that certifies impact resistance also confirms lateral strength. Steel fasteners through the lock flanges anchor the entire system, so individual panels don't peel up during storms. In a region with frequent gust events, this interlocking design outperforms shingles that can separate at the nails or edges.
Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement needed. Interlock's Slate profile installs at about 0.41 lb per square foot, Shake at 0.58, and the Mediterranean Tile profile at 0.59—making tile roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. For context, asphalt shingles weigh 2.5–3 lb per square foot, so metal is actually lighter than most existing roofs. You can install Interlock over your current roof in most cases, saving thousands in tear-off labor and landfill fees. Your home's framing never knows the difference. Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc. has been doing this since 1997; our crews assess each structure and confirm safe installation before scheduling.
Does a metal roof reduce cooling costs?
Yes, particularly with energy-efficient color options. Interlock's cooler finishes achieve thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (measured on Aged Copper Penny), meaning they reflect rather than absorb the sun's heat. The Cool Roof Rating Council rates these colors as efficient at bouncing thermal energy back into the atmosphere instead of conducting it into your attic. With South Bend averaging about 2892 sunshine hours annually, this reflectivity adds up. You're not cooling your home as hard in summer, and lower AC load means lower electricity bills. Metal roofs also conduct and dissipate heat faster than asphalt, so even interior temperatures improve. The energy savings aren't dramatic in the Pacific Northwest like they are in Arizona or Florida, but they're real—especially on south and west-facing slopes.
How long does Interlock metal roofing last, and what's covered?
The Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited non-prorated for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. That's not time-limited—it's for as long as you own the home. The warranty transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion, which boosts your home's appeal to future buyers. The Alunar coating itself is warranted 30 years against fading and chalking (ASTM standards), so even the finish outlasts most roofs. Installed correctly, Interlock panels have been running since 1998 in climates ranging from coastal salt-air to Antarctic research stations. In a region like South Bend with 11 freeze-thaw cycles per year and 2211 mm of rain, the aluminum's non-corrosive nature and the panel's four-way lock mean decades of trouble-free service.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need?
Virtually none compared to asphalt or wood. Asphalt shingles need annual inspections for algae, missing pieces, and granule loss; wood shakes demand treatment against rot and insects. Interlock is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance. You don't treat it, don't stain it, don't replace flashing every 10 years. Twice a decade, rinse off any coastal salt spray or debris with a garden hose—that's it. The Alunar 70% PVDF finish and aluminum core resist degradation from South Bend's 2211 mm of annual rain and 52 cm of snow. No algae grows on bare aluminum; no wood fibers swell and split in freeze-thaw cycles. If a branch falls and creates a small ding, the panel remains weathertight and doesn't trap water like shingles do. This simplicity is why the Guardian Warranty can remain non-prorated for life.
Does a metal roof qualify for hail damage coverage or insurance discounts?
Yes. Interlock carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize this non-combustible aluminum and Class 4 durability as low-risk, sometimes offering discounts on homeowners' premiums or waiving the hail deductible. Contact your insurance agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification to inquire about rate reductions before installation. In the Pacific Northwest, severe hail is less frequent than wind or rain, but Class 4 protection means your roof won't dent, crack, or lose impact resistance the way asphalt or wood does in sudden storms. This resilience—combined with the 30-year coating warranty and lifetime material coverage—makes metal a smart choice in any climate where weather is unpredictable.
